Trunečková, Daniela ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
This diploma thesis on Representation of the problem of climate change in the print media is a content analysis of Czech quality daily newspapers, namely Hospodářské noviny, Lidové noviny, Mladá fronta DNES and Právo. It deals with the way the selected daily newspapers presented debate on global climate change in 2013-2014. The theoretical part informs readers about the basic concepts and definitions and introduces them to the problem. The empirical part answers the question of whether the media coverage of global climate change in Czech quality daily newspapers is consistent with scientific findings of the international climate discourse represented by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or whether it relies equally on opinions of the small group of so called climate skeptics who question the general consensus of the scientific comunity regarding the causes and consequences of climate change or the need of adequate measures. The results of research indicated that most of analyzed articles informed about climate change the same way as the main climatological research. The largest number of skeptical articles appeared in Lidové noviny. A considerable number of articles didn't comment on the causes of climate change, their seriousness or decisions regarding action.

Kumová, Petra ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Slačálek, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis is focused on the DIY principle that can be a catalyst for collectives and individuals aiming to emancipate (consciously or unconsciously) from individualization and commodification that is symptomatic for today's society. This principle is adopted by various subcultures, but I am focused particularly on the hardcore-punk subculture (or precisely said - counterculture), which ideology is based on the idea of non-consumer society emancipated from values, norms and rules, that are being introduced to us by the mainstream society and its power structures. The analytical part of the thesis is focused on particular individuals and collectives, their activities, motivation, as well as the internal functioning of collectives. A combination of methods of qualitative research, especially participant observation and semi- structured interviews, were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using open coding. The collectives show better ability to resist commodification based on long-term practices commonly used in hc-punk to resist to the process of individualization. Their ability to create communities and collective activities is limited. Key words individualization, commodification, hardcore-punk subculture, diy principle, colectives, anarchism

Hosnedlová, Alena ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Kala, Lukáš (referee)
The thesis deals with the problem of global ecological crisis caused by excessive consumption of material goods, particularly in countries of "The Rich North" (western countries). In the theoretical part I set up individualized man as a consumer in the system of modern society, which indicates the conditions of its existence mainly through the market. I discuss the possible way out of the ecological crisis through ideological changes in the company initiated from the "bottom", based on the internalization of values leading to responsible and moderate consumption. I demonstrate alternative ways of life, environmentally friendly in terms of consumption, and discuss the obstacles and ways of its spread. The research was conducted through interviews with eco-advisers who are dealing with consumption, as potential "opinion leaders" in this case. I tried to look their conception of responsible consumption and their potential impact on society in favor of spreading the idea of an environmentally responsible way of life Key words Ecological crisis, consumption, consumerism, modernity, individualization, values, responsible consumption, modesty, environmentally friendly way of life
Arguments and bases of organizations defending animal rights - can we find rapprochement with the protection of nature?
Vohnoutová, Pavla ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Daněk, Tomáš (referee)
In today's society prevails superior attitude to animals that are seen as mere resources, and this work seeks to highlight this issue . The theoretical part shows where this attitude has its roots and then moves into the context of environmental ethics, while trying to show the views that contradict this position. Practical part is looking for arguments and basis of organizations defending the rights of animals and their possible rapprochement with the protection of nature. The chosen method is to analyze the websites of selected organizations defending the rights of animals, focusing on what the organization published on their websitet and what is missing. The main finding is that the central idea of animal rights organizations is the intrinsic value of animals as beings with a right to a dignified life and with the right to satisfy their natural needs. Protection of the nature on the contrary often prefers to the value of each individual animal the value of nature as a whole. Possible rapprochement with the protection of nature can then be found mainly in areas where there is a distortion of values as both protectino of animals and protection of nature. Key words: animal liberation, animal rights, intrinsic value, protection of animals, protection of nature, organizations defending animal rights
