Bibliographic note KULESZA, Izabela A. PATH DEPENDENCE IN AMERICAN PUBLIC EDUCATION . Mater thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Sociological Studies. Supervisor Prof. PhDr. Arnošt Veselý, Ph.D. Abstract This thesis is concerned with the study of public education in the United States as a path-dependent phenomenon. By reviewing the historical background of the institution of education, several key sequences emerge that are foundational principles. They are: a decentralized system, secular education, universal access, decreasing the achievement gap and global competition. Testing these sequences against school choice theories shows the foundational principles behind traditional public schooling in America are being challenged. The institutional reproduction of this pathway is likely to be interrupted in the utilitarian, functional, power and legitimation explanations of path dependence theory. Keywords public education, school choice, path dependence theory Range of thesis: 66

Šottová, Barbora ; Klusáček, Jan (advisor) ; Kohoutek, Jan (referee)
This study deals with the situation of inclusive education after the introduction of amendment No. 82/2015 Coll. Of the Education Act. Problems and areas of improvement that have occurred after the implementation of the amendment from the point of view of pedagogical- psychological counselors are examined. In this work semi-structured interviews with consultants were conducted. The long-term factors influencing the working conditions in counseling was identified: under-funding of the Czech education system, a short tradition of inclusive education at Czech schools and insufficient staffing in counseling. Major areas of improvement include greater cooperation with schools and a new way of providing support measures which must now be provided if needed. On the contrary, the problem area is the increase in the volume of activities for consultants. This situation forces them into strategies that reduce the quality of their work so there is an impact on the children's special educational needs.

Zou, Daiwei ; Kohoutek, Jan (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
From the resumption of university entrance examination in 1977 to 1997, china's higher education has remained free of charge for 20 years. But in 1997, china changed its policy of higher education; students are required to pay for their university education. Since then, the tuition fee for university has undergone a rapid increase. By the year 2013, the tuition fee has increased up to 27 times that of 1997. The increase in university tuition has caused much concern from the public, and many people complained that it not fair for students from rural areas and people with low income. This thesis studies the educational inequality caused by the increase in university tuition and its impact on china's social and economic development. The author applies multiple case studies with the help of official database, the affordability of urban and rural residents to the higher education tuition, university enrollment plan, the financial aid system and government Appropriation over the time period of 2011-2015. Internationalization of Higher Education in Kyrgyzstan
Dogochieva, Tolgonay ; Kohoutek, Jan (advisor) ; Paulus, Michal (referee)
The aim of this research is to find general trends and rationales for internationalization of higher education in Kyrgyzstan. The conceptual framework for this work is based on concepts developed by Knight and de Wit, Knight (2004). It used qualitative research, including secondary data and interviews. Although not very widely but internationalization became part of Kyrgyzstan higher education. There are student and staff mobility programs; the country hosts branches of foreign universities. Kyrgyzstan universities are creating extensive networks with world universities. Bologna process played major role in incorporating Kyrgyzstan education system to the world educational community. Kyrgyzstan has acquired international standards in terms of two-level cycle and credit hours. Along with that higher education is still facing problems and challenges. Corruption and low quality are among them. The study found that the most important rationale for internationalization is educational rationale. It is believed that internationalization improves academic quality. Economic, political and cultural/social rationales are also important.
