The Language of a Czech Minority in Repinka in Siberia

This thesis contributes to the research on Czech dialects in language enclaves abroad. Its objective is to describe the language of the Czech minority in the villages of Repinka, Voskresenka and Novohradka in Russia, Omsk, the territory of Kalachinsk. The research is restricted only to the oldest generations, i.e. people over the age of fifty-five, whose language use is analyzed on these traditional levels of language: phonology, morphology, syntax and marginally also lexicology. The theoretical part of this research deals with the history of Czech immigrants in Tsarist Russia. The study then focuses on the history of Czech immigrants in regions connected with moving to Siberia and on the present philological researches on the Czech community in Omsk region. The following part describes the methods of the data processing. Transcriptions of recorded speeches and prayers in the Czech language set down in Cyrillic alphabet were used as the input data. They were described separately for each language level. Most attention is paid to the elements which help to classify the dialect of Repinka under one of the dialect groups of the Czech language, and furthermore to language elements influenced by foreign languages (especially by Russian). Language of Advertisements in the Czech-American Texas Periodical Svoboda

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to give a detailed description of the language development in advertisements in Czech-American periodical Svoboda. The periodical was issued from 1885 until the 1960s in Texas. Opening chapters sum up the history of Czech immigrants into the USA, present the Czech-American community in Texas emphasising their journalistic activity and characterise both the formal and content aspects of the periodical. The main part focuses on the analysis of four volumes of the weekly newspaper Svoboda based on selected issues from 1886, 1906, 1926 and 1947. Changes emerge on phonological, morphological, lexical, and syntactic levels. The orthography of certain phenomena is modified as a result of the influence of the English language. The results of this study are compared with previous linguistic research.

Capitalization in Separately Published Czech New Testaments of the 15th and 16th Century

This thesis deals with the development of the capitalization in the old Czech prints of separately published New Testaments. Seven New Testaments (one incunabulum and six prints from the 16th century) were chosen for this research. Two excerpts were analysed from each of them. We use the method of the articles by Fidlerová, Dittmann and Vladimírová (2010) and Fidlerová (2013). These articles focused on the usage of capital letters in early modern prints of Czech Bibles. We deal with the capitals from the lexical point of view (according to parts of speech). Substantives, adjectives and numerals were divided into particular categories corresponding to the mentioned studies. Afterwards, the percentage of majuscules in each of these groups was calculated. The results are continuously compared with the initial studies. The thesis includes numerous graphs and tables which clearly present the discovered facts. In addition to the previous research we deal with the clusters of a word printed together with the previous preposition.

Czech Language on Tombstones in Iowa, USA

The aim of this thesis is to describe the Czech language on tombstones in selected cemeteries in the state of Iowa in the U.S., based on photos made in cooperation with Americans and photographs of Iowa cemeteries available on website. The first part deals with the emigration to the United States, the development of settlement Czech immigrants and Czech immigrant communities in Iowa. Then the text mentions the issue of epitaphs as evidence of assimilation of immigrants. Based on available data, examined photographs of tombstones are listed in Annex together with transcribed inscriptions on them. Following section involves linguistic analysis of texts, where is the influence of English reflected. The work is based on studies of E. Eckert, who devoted her work to the Czech language on the tombstones in Texas.

Czech Lexicography of the 15th Century

Mgr. Kateřina Voleková Česká lexikografie 15. století Czech Lexicography of the 15th Century Abstract The thesis deals with Czech medieval lexicography. Based on research into rich manuscript material totalling over 350 items, it describes the development of Czech lexicography from Czech glosses in foreign-language texts and first Latin-Czech glossaries to the flourishing Czech lexicography of the 15th century covering both Latin-Czech, Czech-Latin and multilingual lexicographical works and also infrequently attested Czech monolingual dictionaries. The high number of lexicographical works is divided according to formal and content criteria. With respect to form and macrostructure we discern Czech glosses in Latin and Latin-German glossaries, a bilingual glossaries with Czech as one of the languages, alphabetaries and nomenclators and glossaries lacking an ordering criterion. With respect to the content we distinguish large dictionaries covering as many lexical items as possible on one hand and short glossaries covering only a narrowly delimited part of vocabulary on the other hand. Orthography of Augusta's Summovník

This thesis presents graphemic analysis of the work "Summovník" by Jan Augusta, based on transliteration of selected stretches of texts. Identified as late as in 2012, the work has not been described yet. The work represents a print of the humanistic period, therefore the principal objective was to find out how two orthographic systems of the period - diagraphic and diacritic - interact. The analysis was divided into several chapters corresponding to the examined features that were statistically evaluated. The interpretation was especially based on two key 16th century grammars of Czech - the Grammar of Náměšť and the "Czech Grammar" by Jan Blahoslav. The transliterated text has been analysed in Microsoft Word 2007 by means of "Find and Replace" with "Use of substitute characters" instrument. The work of "Summovník" in this partially transliterated form can be used as a baseline for preparation of an edition of this work.

Textual Dynamism in Bibles of Melantrichian Tradition (1549-1613)

The topic of this diploma thesis was an analysis and comparison of the Bibles of Melantrichian tradition. In the first part of the thesis, we briefly described the history of the Bible translations in Europe and in Czech lands and then we outlined the importance of Melantrichian Bibles in Czech history and literature. At the end of this part of the thesis, we summarized the conclusions of previous analyses of this topic. In the main part of the thesis, we analyzed differences between all Melantrichian Bi- bles divided into five sections - graphics and orthography, phonology, morphology, syntax and textual changes. We used textual probes into the Old Testament and the New Testament as the method for our analysis. Subsequently, we compared our results with the previous analyses of the topic.

Language of the Czech Private Correspondence of the Humanist Period

This work is focused on the language of non-beletristic Czech private correspodence originated between 1611 and 1618 and the aim is to describe the occurence, form and function of linguistic phenomena that refer to higher or lower style. Eight letters from The Archive of Matouš Konečný (deposited in Muzeum Mladoboleslavska) were used for analysis. This manuscripts were transliterated and transcribed in order to gain as much information as possible for futher description. The characteristics of examined linguistic phenomena were taken from diachronic literature first and then compared with analysis results. We also made a conclusion about the influence of stylistic factors (writerʼs competence for creating a cultivated linguistic expression, the relationship between writer and addressee, thematic and functional aspects) on achieved standard of style refinement. Use of aorist, imperfect and perfect in Czech prose in the middle of the 14th century

This thesis deals with the use of the aorist and imperfect tenses and the periphrastic preterite in four Old Czech prosaic translated texts dated back to the beginning of the 2nd half of the 14th century. Analyzed texts are the part of the first edition of the Old Czech translation of the Bible (part of the Dresden Bible completed with the text of Proroci rožmberští (Prophets of Rožmberk), the Legend of St. Wenceslaus from The Old Czech Passional, The Apocalypse of Paul and two chapters of the text O svatém Jeronýmovi knihy troje. We deal with the percentual occurence of the verb forms under investigation and with the aspectual characteristics of the verbs of which the investigated forms are constructed. Also their relationship to the Latin pretext is examined. The acquired results are presented in tables and graphs. This thesis also includes an electronic database of the investigated verbal forms.

Syntactic analysis of Czech speakers in the Romanian Banat

The purpose of this thesis is an analysis of syntactic perturbations in the oral production of Czech speakers of the Bigr village at the Banat region, Romania. In the theoretical part, this thesis describes the historical and linguistic context of the Banat's Czech villages, with special emphasis on Bigr. In the analytical part then, the thesis set out to test hypotheses based on previous research, using the BANAT language corpus created for this study. In cases where it deems possible, the results are compared to the ORAL language corpus of spoken Czech. The analysis verified the existence of certain phenomena of the Bigerian Czech (e.g. prepositional instrumental of instrument, omission of svůj pronoun), the frequency of which partly corresponds to the language situation in oral production in the Czech Republic (e.g. forward position of pronominal subject, reflexive se, si and auxiliary verb být). The presence of some other phenomena could not be verified.
