Towards new Prague! Traditions, visions and constructing the city and its image after 1945

The thesis focuses on the construction and symbolic encoding of Prague from 1945 to the late 1950s, with emphasis on the Stalinist era. Based on an analysis of historical texts and architectural projects, the thesis studies the motivations and tactics, which the post-war political and professional elites sought to manifest their own values and ideological principles in the area of the capital city. Through the analysis of historical concepts of "old" and "new" Prague examines the thesis the changing relationship between tradition and modernity in the image of the city. The sociocultural phenomenon of Stalinism is thematized as a specific part of the long process of modernization, which passes through Prague during the first half of the 20th century. The thesis deals also with the attributes that should characterize the "new" socialist Prague and with the ways of using the Soviet patterns and local historical traditions. The Hyphen War in the Discussions of the Federal Assembly of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic

The thesis focuses on the first months following the Velvet Revolution. In this period, the Czechoslovak political system is somewhat taken by surprise by new political agenda which becomes as important as the reconstruction of the parliamentary liberal democracy itself. National and ethnic problems emerging since the beginnings of the common state reappeared unexpectedly in the form of the Hyphen War. Besides the institutional framework within which the whole dispute took place, I analyze certain communication problems that not only influenced the form of the negotiations discussing the state name but also indicated the shape of the last years of Czecho-Slovak coexistence within one federation. The main source for analysis of the problem outlined above is the material of Společná česko-slovenská digitální parlamentní knihovna; specifically, a selection of texts composed of parliamentary debates records and stenographic records. Jaroslav Werstadt and its place in the Czech historiography

7 Abstract Jaroslav Werstadt was born March 21, 1888 in Pilsen and died on January 8, 1970 in Prague. He was an important Czech historian and publicist. Since his student years, he attended a political struggle against Austria-Hungary. He was a prisoner of the concetraition camp Buchenwald. Many of his works are devoted to the resistence isme. He has a great interest in Czech history and philosophy of history. This thesis discusses the work of Jaroslav Werstadt in the field of Czech history and its development in philosophy of history. Subsequently it compares his work, views and opinions with other philosophers and historians. Namely Franišek Palacký, Bohuslav Balbín, Tomáš G. Masaryk and others. The symbol of time - "patriotic" priest Josef Plojhar

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to compose biographical essay of the life of catholic priest Josef Plojhar, from his childhood to the beginning of fifties in the 20th century. Up to now unknown sources will be employed and with regard to absence of sources' platform partly oral historical sources will be used. I will follow his personal life, social situation of his family, problematic question of his germanization, career as a priest and consequential transformation to the profane sphere, the years in concentration camps and the years after 1945.

Remembering the Czechoslovak Normalization in the Popular Culture and the Ways of Its Use in Didactics

This work focuses on the social practice of recollection, the so-called standardization in public sphere and possibilities to grasp this subject in history teaching. The aim is to describe this practice and at the same time, to define effective methods of its thematization in school environment. In the first part, I am concerned with the concepts of memory from Maurice Halbwachs to Alison Landsberg and I emphasize my preference for the concept of media memory as the basis for my further researches. Furthermore, I analyse models of historical education in Anglo-American environment on the one hand and German environment on the other hand. I analyse the strong and weak points of these models based on the concept of "historical thinking" and "historical consciousness". In the second part, I analyse the resemblance of memoir characters to the so-called standardization in movie presentations and their perception by users of the movie site www.csfd.cz. The objective of this analysis was to point out to the fact how we communicate about movies and which values are associated with watching movies. I linked the analysis of movie images and their perception to the idea of dominant cultural formations of the Czech society in Michael Kennedy's mind. Narratives of the crusades in czech high school history textbooks published during the 20th century

This thesis deals with different narratives of the crusades found in czech high school history textbooks published during the 20th century. The paper shows various narrative strategies, use of languages and figures of speech that allow for many different points of view and a wide range of explanations of the same historical material. The paper is grounded in the historical narrativism paradigm and organized as follows: the first chapter introduces the theoretical background of narrativism, the second chapter deals with the theoretical approach to history textbooks and with the research that has gone into them. The third chapter offers analyses of all of the scrutinized history textbooks. The fourth and final chapter presents a synthesis spanning all the textbooks, looking for various recurring themes and phenomena.

The life of secret agent Vojtěch Kučera: microhistorical study

This thesis intends to introduce the life story of Vojtěch Kučera, "agent-walker", who undertook at least twenty-six illegal border crossing across Czechoslovakia border during the years 1946 - 1954. During his last illegal border crossing he was catched, accused of espionage and then sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in the year 1955. The first part of the thesis is based on three variations of Kučera's life story. These three stories are constructed (and later deconstructed ) by using informations from family memories, Kučera's statement as well as from the film Agent K vypovídá. The second part of the thesis is based on several microhistorical probes. By using microhistorical analysis we aim to understand Kučera's thinking, behaving and motivations.

Remembering Easter Rising

5 Abstract The bachelor thesis focuses on the official policy of remembering the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916. The attention concentrates on the political representatives of the Irish Free State and Irish Republic from 1922 to 2006 and their attitude towards commemorations of the Easter Rising. The topic is elaborated using mainly English secondary sources and also some primary sources like political documents and videos. Regarding the methodology, the so-called collective memory concept is used, especially the lieux de mémoire method by Pierre Nora. The thesis examines the basic factors influencing the Irish representatives' attitude towards the Easter commemorations. Simultaneously, the paper analyses the means used by the Irish representatives to influence the people's commemorative practises. Pictures of cultural and social history of Český Krumlov 1890 - 1950. subtitle: Micro-historical probe based on analysis of photos from Seidel

5 Abstract: The bachelor thesis focuses on subject of photography and its relationship with society. This work attempts to the micro-historical probe to the cultural and social history of Český Krumlov in the years 1890 - 1950. As the main sources uses archive of Museum Photostudio Seidel (photographs, accountant books, customer books, diaries). In interaction with other sources (registers, statistics from the census, records of professional and business association) follows up as photograph reflects social status of customers and what it reveals about theirs relationship with this medium and to the actual act of photography. The work is based on analysis and comparison of sources based on inspiration from the professional literature on photography (Jaroslav Anděl, Pierre Bourdieu, Roland Barthes). Partially it touches problems of photo such as possible sources of historiographical knowledge.
