Social, family and interpersonal relationships in Hálek's late prose
Matušková, Kateřina ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
This thesis presents an analysis of three rural prose works by Vítězslav Hálek from the peak period of his work, Na statku a v chaloupce (1871), Na vejminku (1873) and Pod pustým kopcem (1874). It focuses both on placing these stories in the overall context of Hálek's work and on analysing the general transformation of the author's short story output. Short stories are present throughout Hálek's creative career, however its final phase marks a change in the author's poetics, the protagonists and their surroundings become more thoroughly rendered, and the social issues of the contemporary village are more prominently thematised. The thesis analyses Hálek's fictional worlds through his literary characters, based on their position within the family or village collective, their age, and their function in the texts. The final chapter is devoted to space-time as a category closely linked to literary characters. Key words: Vítězslav Hálek; Na statku a v chaloupce; Na vejminku; Pod pustým kopcem; rural prose; short story

Fráňa, Jakub ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Wiendl, Jan (referee)
Home as Topos in Jan Čep's and Egon Hostovsky's novels Abstract: The aim of the bachelor thesis is to present works of Jan Čep and Egon Hostovsky, namely from the perspective of their common and for both of them significant topic of home. In the first and second part I pursue both of the authors separately - I present their work in literary and social context and analyze how the images of home are created in them since their creative beginnings until reflections of exile. The final part is comparative. There I compare both Čep's and Hostovsky's work and put them in wider cultural framework defined by the theme of home (as a universal human experience).
Cultural and Historical Works of Alois Jirásek
Pokorná, Gabriela ; Vaněk, Václav (referee)
The purpose of this rigorous thesis is to present Alois Jirásek as an author of popular texts, both educative and tendentious, published in contemporary periodicals or reprinted in his collected works as the case may be; and thus adjust his conventional picture as a writer exclusively of fiction. Jirásek's writings on historical and cultural topics, having largely been on the margins of scholarly focus (as secondary literature appears to refer to them on very few occasions), shall be stratified and characterized here, as well as contrasted and compared with the works of other selected authors. The work attempts to reflect their merits educative and instructive, and - assembling all the fundamental information - aims to serve as the basis for further research and outline its possibilities. The image of the Bohemian forest in Czech and German-written literature since 1945. Landscape lost and rediscovered homeland, the space of meeting and passing by of the nationes
Denková, Helena ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Holý, Jiří (referee)
The image of the Bohemian Forest in Czech as well as in German written literature is above all determined by the troubled geopolitical development of this region. Most of Czech texts about Šumava originated during the time of the communist regime, while German-writing authors concern themselves with this theme mainly only after the year 1989. The Bohemian Forest is usually considered an area on the Czech side of the border by the Czechs, German-writing authors, on the contrary, regard the Bohemian Forest, i.e. "Böhmerwald" as a region going beyond borders, belonging geographically, historically and culturally to the borderland of the three states. The Bohemian Forest represents landscape as well as civilisation in both Czech and German written texts. Literature reflects particularly on current topics such as, for example, nature preservation, vanished German villages, the rediscovery of the Bohemian Forest after the year 1989 and others. Authors writing in Czech as well as ones writing in German also deal with the problem of relationships between the Czech and the Germans.
Sabina's romantic short story
Hesová, Petra ; Vaněk, Václav (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The thesis deals with the prose work written by KAREL SABINA in the period from 1835 till 1848. The starting point of the thesis is an analysis of Hesperidky (Ervín), a not very well-known story, through which the author shows general features of romantic literature in the Czech as well as in the European context. In the next chapter we can find characteristic of the typical heroes of Sabinas works, in particular it means a tramp, a gravedigger, an executioner and different images of female characters. The last two chapters deal with an analysis of texts that have remained unnoticed by the professional literature so far - unpublished prose Čech and tales Obrazy a květy snů. The work also includes an extensive supplement with a list of Sabinas prose works written before March 1848, and with an edition of the manuscript of Čech and a transcript of the novel Vesničané.
