Position of space private sector in China and USA
Nodesová, Markéta ; Pražák, Jakub (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the differences in approach of liberal-democratic regimes and authoritative regimes in relation to the private space sector in terms of the long-term sustainability of each approach, in the cases of the People's Republic of China and the United States of America as representatives of these regimes. The aim of the thesis is to find out the relationship of the cases to the private space sector from the beginning of the "New Space" era to the present day. "New Space" represents the rise of commercial actors and private companies who intend to use the space for commercial gain. This "New Space" ecosystem forms new relationships between countries and private actors, which also leads to changes in national space programs. While states maintain their leading position in the space domain, they are increasingly linked to the "New Space" actors. However, the state-private sector relationship differs depending on the regime in which the country operates. In the first part of my thesis, I describe the principles of both examined regimes and set out the basic conditions for the long- term sustainability of the private space sector according to Mahan's theory. I also assessed the astropolitics of space, including the astropolitics of China and the USA. Subsequently, I focused on...
International Jewish organizations as political actors
Kůstková, Daniela ; Kubátová, Hana (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor thesis builds on the existing discussion about transnational interactions and transnational advocacy networks with a case study dedicated to Jewish NGOs. Activities of five international Jewish organisations in relation to the Visegrad Group countries were analysed, with attention focused on advocacy of the international Jewish organisations against anti- Semitism. The activities of the NGOs were interpreted in the context of the transnational advocacy networks theory by Margaret E. Keck and Kathryn Sikkink which is suitable especially for value-oriented political actors. The thesis describes the strategies by which the international Jewish organizations try to enter politics to advance their own agendas. Public statements responding to current political events, direct calls on political authorities to change behaviour or political decisions, arranging face-to-face meetings with political authorities and forming coalitions with local Jewish communities were identified as the most frequently used strategies by the international Jewish organisations to enter politics. The analysis of the activities of the international Jewish organizations also showed that these actors base their authority on their professional character and that they at all times seek to act as serious political...
The Dilemmas of Surveillance Profiling: The Case of the United States
Petrosyan, Davit ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
1 Introduction to the Thesis and the Importance of the Topic The sorting and the categorization of individuals and groups by their capacity and inclination to risky behavior or level of dangerousness has been and remains an essential function of security apparatus of the state and a vital component in state security. Practices of this kind became even more important in the age of international terror. The western world and specifically the United States has been the primary target of international terror suffering numerous terrorist attacks including the 9/11 attacks that became thedefining moment of how security functions in themodern world. While what we call "western world" is dominantly defined by liberal democratic political order, many of its societies and specifically the US is also defined by atechnology-enabled environment that scholarship characterizes as "surveillance society" (Gandy 1989, Lyon 2001, Lyon & Bauman 2012). Withintechnology-enabled environments the technologization of security was inevitable (Ceyhan 2008), and the 9/11 generated even more intense and enhanced efforts ofspeeding this process up (Lyon 2004, Ball and Webster 2003). In the post 9/11 US war on terror, specifically surveillance technologies became central to security policies (Ceyhan 2006) as universal security enablers...

Analyzing the Effects of Ethnicity on Internal Armed Conflicts in Burma: Identity Crisis and the Struggle for Recognition
Nyunt, Myo Win ; Salamon, Janusz (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
While it is a widely accepted argument that ethnicity and armed conflicts are inextricably linked, there is little understating regarding in which conditions and how exactly ethnicity affects armed conflicts, which this thesis aims to explain through a qualitative case study on Burma, a Southeast Asian nation where what is known as ethnic armed organizations and the national armed forces of Burma-the Tatmadaw-have been at war since Burma got independence from Britain in 1948. While ethnicity can turn into a source of conflict in certain situations, ethnic differences per se are not the cause of conflict. However, ethnicity and ethnic groups can produce negative effects in certain situations. As the main research question, this study asks: In which conditions and how 'ethnicity' produce adverse effects that fuel armed conflicts? In addition to the main research question, this study will test three hypotheses in relation of the main research question to get a clear picture of the adverse effects of ethnicity on armed conflicts. The study concludes by discussing research findings and questions for further research in the area of ethnic armed conflict. Klíčová slova: Ethnicity, Armed Conflict, Recognition, Identity Crisis, Burma/Myanmar
The Effects of Climate Change on Migration and Its Implication on the Mediterranean World
Gornes, Francisco ; Jelínková, Marie (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
The effects of climate change and global warming and the conversations surrounding it are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The future predictions of the impact of climate change on the planet present daunting challenges for people around the globe, especially for the Mediterranean littoral, which has been labeled as a climate "hot spot". The paper focuses on the effects of climate change on migration patterns in the Mediterranean region to understand what a warmer future in the Mediterranean may look like to develop policies and strategies that may mitigate some of the more negative outcomes. The paper's main objective is to answer the following question; what are the links between migration patterns and climate change in the Mediterranean region? To the question, it is important to first define and place the theoretical framework firmly in the context that the paper is covering, such as the political, economic, social, environmental and demographic factors. Once these factors are defined, they are applied to real-world case studies in the form of North Africa and Syria through Black, Adger, et al.'s framework of drivers of migration through qualitative and quantitative data that comes from secondary resources. After analysing and comparing the two case studies the results showed that...
Russia's Wars in the Ukraine and Georgia: A parallel case study of Russia's choice to engage in the 2014 Ukraine Crisis and 2008 Russo-Georgian War
Neppel, David ; Tesař, Jakub (advisor) ; Ludvík, Jan (referee)
for Diploma Thesis "Russia's Wars in the Ukraine and Georgia: A parallel case study of Russia's choice to engage in the 2014 Ukraine Crisis and 2008 Russo-Georgian War" David Neppel Prague 27.07.2021 The present diploma thesis examines the reasons for the Russian Federation's military action in the 2014 Ukraine crisis and the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. The scope of research is focused on the various actors that held a stake prior to the conflicts and how these conditions in the international arena influenced Russian decision making. In this capacity, the thesis seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of the involved actors' positions and ambitions and how these impacted the eventual unfolding of events. The method chosen to conduct this work is an expected utility approach. A spatial model will be constructed in which all the information about players' preferences and acceptable outcomes is represented visually. Then an analysis will be concluded that seeks to find overlaps/discrepancies between actors' positions and will eventually determine the failure of negotiations.
Global Environmental Governance: The Role of Nation States
Karkoš, Daniel ; Makariusová, Radana (advisor) ; Tesař, Jakub (referee)
This thesis is an analysis of the adoption of environmental regimes by nation states, and the impact on their role as sovereign entities. The analysis is achieved by a comparison of Australia and New Zealand with regards to the establishment of their environmental policies and institutions after the introduction of environmental regimes, to which they correspond. The two regimes chosen here are the Montreal Protocol, which is based on intergovernmental cooperation, and the forest certification scheme, represented by the Forest Stewardship Council, which operates as a market-based regime. The regimes are chosen to embody two different types of environmental governance. Conversely, the countries are chosen for the similarity in culture, history, and language, yet difference in the kind of state system. The countries are compared by a structured, focused comparison. The structure is achieved by use of standardised questions that are based on the Contextual Interaction Theory, and focus on three aspects of sovereignty: autonomy, control, and legitimacy. This allows for comparisons within each regime, which show that the two chosen nation states cede some of their sovereign powers in the case of the Montreal Protocol, and incorporate the Forest Stewardship Council into their policies. A trend of...
