Cultural Center Brno
Slunečková, Magdaléna ; Hrabec, Josef (referee) ; Šindlar, Jiljí (advisor) ; Berková, Petra (advisor)
The work deals with a design of Culture centre in Brno located on the gap site in front of park Obilní trh on Údolní street. An urban design concept keeps all of existing buildings that are currently in use and completes a frontage line of surrounding historic buildings. Broader entrance area is created by a cantilevered structure. Main point of the design is a courtyard, or a big atrium with symetrically curved shape, allowing daylighting and interconnection of inner spaces. Architectural design is given by a concept of the cultural center being a „sprouted grain“, or a place for talent display and collective evolution. Hallway, passageway, corridors and foyer are placed around a courtyard, space dynamics is itensified with a circular staircase. The Building of the Cultural center is composed of two parts: anterior one (northern part) with a courtyard and posterior one with bigger multipurpose hall and its support area (southern part), set in a sloping terrain. Anterior part consists of several rooms of versatile use (smaller hall, practice rooms, clubrooms) and studios that can be linked together to create an exhibition area, plus staff, technical and sanitary facilities. On street level, there are entrances to commercial spaces and a tea-room with a bookstore. A street-facing facade (northern one) is designed as a curtain wall, glazed in central part with circular staircase and thin marble pannels cladding on sides. As for the courtyard, a structural facade with glazing in combination with marble panelling is used.
LABORARTORY BRNO
Grenarová, Lucie ; Hrabec, Josef (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
This paper is proposing an architectural and town-planning solution of the corner parcel located on the crossing of Koliště and Milady Horákové streets in Brno, which has been vacant so far. The author of this paper has designed a building which is meant to be used as a gallery of architecture, design, and contemporary art. The building is filling the space of the round corner up. From the outside, it is not attracting much attention, its intention is to give an impression of an ordinary wall. But this wall wants to provoke curiosity of passing people, it wants to make them ask about the secret it is hiding. This curiosity brings us inside where we discover a totally other type of place which is dominated by a lofty construction made of glass and delicate truss structure. The main entrance into the gallery is from an open pedestrian underpass which leads from the Janáčkovo divadlo to the Kapitána Jaroše street. The most of six floors of the building is dedicated to the gallery, including the roof terrace which is designed for seasonal exterior expositions. The main purpose of the designed building is to make art a permanent part of the lives of Brno inhabitants and it is regarding this goal in every possible way.

Industrial and military architecture of seaports, comparative analysis of reconversion of industrial and military heritage
Remy-Zéphir, Šárka ; Prof.Ing.arch.Peter Vodrážka,PhD. (referee) ; Hrabec, Josef (referee) ; Prof.Patrick Dieudonné (referee) ; Zemánková, Helena (advisor)
During World War II, seaports Brest, Lorient and Saint-Nazaire were heavily destroyed because of their strategic location on the Atlantic coastline. Those historical events could be considered as new opportunities for the seaports to realise new thoughts and ambitious architectural projects in order to improve the functionality of the urban organism. In these days, a new occasion has come. Military and industrial areas, which were always thoroughly separated from the town centres, have been now releasing from their original activity. There are huge free building sites in the middle of the cities, waiting for the urban architects.
Gallery aviation technology and traditions of aviation at the airport Medlánky in Brno
Sudolský, Filip ; Hrabec, Josef (referee) ; Šindlar, Jiljí (advisor)
The main subject of the diploma project was to create architecture study for new building of a Gallery for sport aircrafts and their traditions and other equipment that cooperate with this topic. The Gallery is designed in Brno´s Medlanky municipality and it is incorporated on current local sport airport. This project was preceded by studio project on the same area, which included reconstruction and development of this airport area. In this diploma project I was trying to continue with this development and establish a design which would react to my earlier design. The site has a sloped character and it separated from a dense city area. Starting point for the design was to gently touch the landscape and also trying to find certain references directly in the closest surrounding. From the views to surrounding was created the idea to preserve the horizontal lines and with a landscape and constructions demands was created the main idea to continue with the landscape over the spatial structure. The need to cover large-scale exhibit items like aircrafts and other items from this topic led to a starting point of my design. The structure is formed as a spatial truss structure and dominates the exhibition space. Building is connected by program and structure to services and other areas like conference hall, coffee, study room, work room and administration. As a one building it teems mainly from arrival at the airport area when the roofing is an organic, monolithic surface disappearing in surrounding. But gallery itself emerges from the ground and opens towards the aircraft take off and departure area where it is also direction of a main view to the surrounding. The building is also unique for its entering, such as the main entrance through narrow staircase gap in the roof. This entrance should evoke to people an aircraft landing, where while descent plane dive in to the clouds and appear underneath above a whole new landscape. Thus a person sore in to the roof surface a
Industrial estate of the former fire-clay works MŠLZ Mladějov in Morava - functional usage of the area by the Industrial Museum Mladějov
Racková, Eliška ; Vojtová, Lea (referee) ; Hrabec, Josef (advisor)
The design goal is to propose future utilisation of large former industrial site containing heterogeneous set of manufacturing, service and dwelling buildings of different age and qualities. Also the site is heterogeneous itself – the old industrial grounds which are quite well maintained and long-term used apart from the new part – which has been conquered in hurry in the 60’ and now quickly disappearing in birch succession forest. The difference is reflected not only in site use design, but also in architectural solution of singular buildings. Buildings in the old part serv to the needs of Museum and its further activities and reacts to the style defined by Lichtenstein period architecture – power station and steam plant. Different pattern of each building aimed to utilization of the full building renovation approaches spectrum, ranging from steam plant conservation to analogical installation in the power plant to analogical reconstruction od wooden floor of the old furnance. Question of use and design of the blast furnances is far more complex and became the main topic of this work. The furnance approaches much more the LTO area than building one. It includes only two standard building spaces (threshers), the rest is taken by machinery or closed and inaccessible. The building character predestinates the furnances to become a archeologized monument. The design goal was to use the time still remaining for this unique structure with the intensity possible from the safety and functioning views. In the first stage, the furnance will house a community of artists, other creative or interested people functionally parallel to Cartuzian order monasteries. The housing units will be built in the powdery reservoirs, the common rooms in the threshers. A parallel to the chapel will be the furnance base – being accessible to the public. Every reservoir unit consists of two containers, winter garden and own garden space, every one is a miniature, but fully self sufficient unit surrounded by its own little universe, as the Cartusian idea requires. The main construction used will be the shipping containers, adapted for dwelling, put on suspended “cradles”. The unused rest of the reservoir space will be used as gigantic flower pot. In time, the roles of the spaces will change. The communication spaces of the former community house will become the only access to the furnance spaces and the corridor will remain half open as a view platform.
LABORARTORY BRNO
Lindovská, Lucie ; Hrabec, Josef (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
The concept of highly exposed street corner of the streets Koliště and Milady Horákové is trying to focus on site's benefits and eliminate its biggest difficulty - isolation by the traffic. The design also explores different ways to exhibit modern art, it is focused on maximal variability, usability and seasonal exploitability. The building itself has eight floors and it is placed for that you can still have the eye connection between the strees of Kapitan Jaros and Moravian square. These two sites are connected by a ramp that continues with an underpass creating new public space used by the gallery to establish outdoor exhibitions, workshops and many more, so that the city and the people passing are dragged into the game.
