Generational shift in women's attitudes towards the upbringing of their children in the early 21st century
Nováková, Luďka ; Maříková, Hana (advisor) ; Šmídová, Olga (referee)
This thesis deals with the generational shift in women's attitudes towards the upbringing of their own children in the early 21st century. The aim of this thesis is to determine how today's generation of mothers reflects the upbringing of their parents, reflection of their own experience with upbringing and whether that leads to some inter- generational shift or change within the approach itself. Possible causes and influences of shifts and changes are discussed. To achieve this goal a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with women - mothers was conducted. The research shows that in fact shifts in these approaches actually occur and that the main criterion is a reflection of one's own childhood in particular, reflection of one's parents and reflection of the current relationship with one's parents.
Lesbian Identity as a Stigma?
Kalinová, Pavla ; Maříková, Hana (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This thesis raises the question to what extent remains lesbian identity relevant as a stigma in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part shows how sexuality and homosexuality in particular is influenced and shaped by society. I draw predominantly from scientific texts of foreign origin and for information relating to the Czech Republic I draw from Czech resources. My approach to the study of sexuality is constructivist. The research part of my study I drew from the analysis of semi-structured interviews with lesbian women. Initially, I offered an insight on what it means to be lesbian by the bearers of lesbian identities themselves. In the central part of my study, I explained in what context and why are the lesbian identities usually experienced as a stigma. As part of everyday life lesbian identity manifests itself as a stigma especially when a lesbian did not come out and treats her own identity as a stigma herself. By doing so she brings tension into interactions, especially with people who she is closer with, because she constantly deals with the control of information about her lesbian identity. Dissimulation of lesbian identity gets even harder in case that she is in relationship with a woman. Such a thing is necessarily connected with closeting the relationship, which makes it difficult for the...

Vytisková, Tereza ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
The aim of the thesis was to investigate how single parents is presented in daily press. Single parents is an important today social problem so I find this as an important research field. The media have the power to influence our thoughts and opinions. I wonder who has the opportunity to comment in the media, what the distribution of individual information sources are and who talks about this (laymen, sociologist, psychologists or representatives of various organizations). The research was conducted through quantitative and qualitative content analysis. This thesis focuses on the differences between people who talks about single parents and also tries to point out how "single mother" is displayed by media and what it means for us. "Gender stereotyped optics in upbringing of several Prague's families"
Novotná, Barbora ; Maříková, Hana (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of gender stereotypes in the context of parental upbringing. This paper is based on qualitative research and analysis of eleven semi- structured interviews with parents who bring up at least two children of different sex. I focus on the relation between identified gender stereotypes in upbringing and parenting style. I also focus on gender stereotyped attitudes of fathers and mothers within individual families. On the basis of the interviews analysis I conclude that gender stereotypes in upbringing and overall optics of gender stereotypes are present in all families, regardless of parenting style. I am finding that differences among families with diverse parenting styles are primarily in the degree of awareness of gender stereotyped attitudes and the degree of active transmission of these attitudes to their children.
Motherhood among undergraduate women
Pecková, Vendula ; Vohlídalová, Marta (advisor) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
Thesis "Motherhood during university studies" deals with the the topic of motherhood among undergraduate women, whose attitude towards having children whilst studying differs from that of their schoolmates. The author asks questions about how these women interpret the fact that they have children during their university studies and how they harmonize their studies with childcare. She did a qualitative research among undergraduate women who had a baby during their studies. In the theoretical part, the author deals with current trends in demographic behaviour, with structural and institutional conditions connected with parenthood and cultural trends of parenthood in Czech Republic. Because of the research, the author concludes that within undergraduate women there is a group of students that plan to have a baby during their studies because they are against the majority age norms of having babies at the age of thirty. They can harmonize studies with childcare because of the support of their families. If these women are motivated to finish their studies, they can develop many strategies to accomplish it.
Unemployment in the Czech Republic in gender terms from perspective of Labor Office
Černostová, Daria ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
Unemployment is a subject examined in many fields, e.g. sociology, economics or psychology. However, all these areas for the most part disregard gender implications within the topic. This is why I have attempted in my work to address the issue of unemployment from a gender perspective in greater detail through the activities of the Labor Office, as the central institution dealing with unemployment in the Czech Republic. Specifically, I have examined whether or not there are gender stereotypes in the work of female and male employees of the Labor Office; in particular, whether or not jobs and retraining programs have been offered, or demanded, in a gender-stereotypical manner. Since I conducted interviews for my research shortly after the amendments to the Employment Act and the Labor Code took effect, which fundamentally influenced the activities of female and male employees of the Labor Office, I have obtained significant additional information on the functioning of the new measures in practice. Therefore, my thesis provides an insight not only into gender stereotypes in the work of the Labor Office, but also into the new tools of what is referred to as "active employment policy" (from the point of view of the Labor Office's employees), including both the envisaged benefits of these tools as well...
Family structures, trends and prospects in the East Kazakhstan region
Ualkenova, Dinara ; Rychtaříková, Jitka (advisor) ; Kocourková, Jiřina (referee) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
This study addresses modern types of families in the East-Kazakhstan region and their role in the development of population. Using a sample of East-Kazakhstani women interviewed in 2008 in the "Family Transformation survey," this study focuses on continuously married women and women who have been previously married. The purpose of this thesis is analysis of factors influential on the intention to be divorced. Additionally, this thesis investigates issue: how a woman's family life-course (marital status and number of children born in the first marriage) influences the risk of a post-dissolution birth among divorced women. Also this study attempts to analyze how the experience of a marital dissolution affects a woman's cumulated fertility. The results show that women who underwent a marital dissolution have lower fertility than those who remained continuously married, and that repartnering enables this group of women to recapture the fertility lost with the dissolution of the first marriage. With a rise in divorce rates and existing differences of post-dissolution marital behaviors for those who have been previously married, it has become important to account for the type of dissolution (widowhood or divorce) of a union when analyzing partnership formation after the breakdown of a union. Additionally, this...
A Permanent or Temporary Change? The Arrangement of Gender Roles in Families with Caring Fathers
Maříková, Hana ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Kozlová, Lucie (referee) ; Kuchařová, Věra (referee)
1 Abstract: In her dissertation thesis, the author concentrates on the phenomenon of 'caring fathers'. Her primary goal was not to explicate the transformations of fatherhood but to explore whether direct and daylong childcare provided by the father leads to the elimination of gender inequalities in the family during the period when the father is involved in childcare as the primary care provider or co-provider as well as during the immediately following period when he returns to the labour market. This issue is a less explored one in Czech sociology and related sciences than the first topic even as fathers' participation in childcare and child education is considered to be one of the ways to challenge cultural and social inequalities between genders. In her work the author aims to answer the question whether in families where fathers are involved in childcare in the early stages of the child's life, gender inequalities in the family are disrupted or whether this situation constitutions a mere modification of the status quo. She asks when gender equality in families occurs (or can occur) and what the relationship is between gender equality in the family and gender inequality in larger society. The study is based on a specifically designed qualitative research study carried out in 2006 and in 2009 through...
Experiences of mothers on maternity/parental leave
Klampflová, Jana ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Maříková, Hana (referee)
The issue of work/family balance is a highly topical one, however it cannot be considered gender neutral as it is often perceived as a problem unique to women. The labour market situation, gender stereotypes in society, the limited supply of childcare services, as well as the current duration of parental leave creates an environment where it is assumed that mothers (especially those with children under the age of three or four years) will not be active participants in the labour market. All of these aspects are considered in the theoretical part of the work, however the main focus of the work lies in qualitative research on the experiences of mothers on parental leave who are also working in the public sector.
