Impartiality and value-based education in the teaching of political geography in high schools in Czechia: The case of the war in Yugoslavia
Gáthy, Zuzana ; Hána, David (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
According to the Education Act the education is supposed to be apolitical, but at the same time the teacher is supposed to educate students about values. The question is how far it is better to remain impartial in order to avoid influencing students and how far it is better to present personal opinion for the purpose of value-based education. The aim of the thesis was to find out how high school teachers in Czechia perceive the need and possibilities of impartial teaching of political geography and related value-based education. The second objective was to propose suitable methods for impartial teaching of political geography in high school geography classes. Part of the thesis is specifically focused on the teaching of the war in Yugoslavia and the discussion of the impartial conception of this conflict. The research involved a quantitative survey involving 277 respondents from among high school teachers, followed by 9 qualitative interviews with high school teachers. The core of the work is the results of the research, which are compared with each other and presented in the form of graphs, tables and excerpts from interviews. Czech high school geography teachers support impartial teaching of political geography and try to achieve an impartial approach. However, value-based education is a more...

Connection between distribution of socio-economic characteristics of population and economy in relation to railway network in Czechoslovakia in 1921 and 1930
Marek, Martin Václav ; Marada, Miroslav (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
Connection between distribution of socio-economic characteristics of population and economy in relation to railway network in Czechoslovakia in 1921 and 1930 Abstract Transport is closely related with social and economic processes in space and they affect each other. History of transport, and economy and history of the population are themes quite well covered. Attempts to synthetically cover history of transport and society and its activities in the space have not been numerous, if any they only referred to certain examples, although the transport, especially rail, is mentioned as an important factor of development. The diploma thesis analyzes statistical dependece of selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of national censuses in 1921 and 1930 and economic characteristics and agriculural units in 1930 on rail infrastructure in the Czechoslovak Republic. The key statistical data are selected census results (eg. age of population, literacy and inhabitans in the sector of the national economy), results of census of economic and agricultural units (for example units equipment) at the level of administrative units in Czechoslovakia. Spatial data (maps) are an important source, too. These allow statistical and visualization operations in the GIS. They had to be digitized in order to create map...
Duality of Europe: historical-geographical analysis of the development and its delimitation
Nováček, Aleš ; Jeleček, Leoš (advisor) ; Baar, Vladimír (referee) ; Gurňák, Daniel (referee)
14 Charles University in Prague Faculty of Science Department of Social Geography and Regional Development Aleš Nováček DUALISM IN EUROPE: HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND ITS DELIMITATION Summary Prague 2010 15 The Twentieth Century gave the European structure as well as the world new face. However, this assertion is true only partially. Behind these "fresh" traces as results of more and more intensive and dynamic development there are still hidden hundred-year-old fundaments which, thanks to their influence, continuously determine and jointly form the current geographical structure of Europe, including its special contours and division. Looked at from the most general level, the European structure was at least till the year 1989 clear: on one side there was the capitalist and democratic West and on the other side the socialistic and communistic East. It was this period when the dual perception of Europe became dominant, not only in the geopolitical concepts of the literature focused on this field but also in the perception of the public itself. The fact that the phenomenon of dualism in Europe is clear and continually followed from the ancient times till the present days makes this conception even more stable. This continuum can be also found behind the fact that not even after the...
Analysis of the Israeli far-right activities on the West Bank
Mrázek, Vojtěch ; Jelen, Libor (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
There are many negative consequences related to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. The phenomenon of the settler's violence is one of them. The aim of the thesis is to explain the conditionality of the violence and to put it into context with Israeli political scene. A quantitative analysis is made to examine the relationship between Israeli far-right parties' electoral gains and the incidence of violence against Palestinians residents of the West Bank. Also, spatial analysis is made to measure the level of clustering of the incidents. To articulate the theoretical assumptions, the theory of social cleavages was used. In line with the assumptions, the results suggest that in Jewish settlements on the West Bank, there is statistically significant connection between Israeli far-right parties' electoral gains and the number of the violent incidents. The strongest correlation is proven between the incidents and the electoral gains of the parties influenced by Kahanism, a militant racist ideology. There is a weaker correlation between the incidence of violence and the electoral gains of the parties representing Religious Zionism, an ideology that combines religion and nationalism. The spatial distribution of the incidents was irregular. There was a clustering of high values in several areas,...
Changing geographical pattern of Turkey: The Analysis of factors determining country's polarization
Zinek, Jiří ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
Regional differentiation is a complex phenomenon concerning all countries of the world, which is analyzed by countless studies, but without a generally accepted theoretical anchorage. The Thesis deals with the transformation of Turkish regional image at multiple levels from 1975 to 2018. This transformation is analyzed by a set of selected demographic and socioeconomic indicators. The main objective is to document and evaluate Turkish regional demographic and socioeconomic differentiation, which leads to the country's polarization. The Thesis is based on statistical data from the Turkish Statistical Office. The geographical concentration of demographic and socioeconomic indicators was illustrated by tabular and map outputs. Sigma convergence evaluating the evolution of differentiation of individual indicators Gini coefficients are shown by graphs. The multiple regression analysis method examined the impact of geographical aspects on selected demographic and socioeconomic indicators. Significant part of the Thesis also deals with Turkish political- geographical context and the theoretical approaches on which it is based.

Smolová, Kristýna ; Duffková, Jana (advisor) ; Míková, Helena (referee) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
The dissertation thesis deals with socio-cultural problems of suburbanization with a focus on green widows as a phenomenon of contemporary society. Green widows are defined as a specific group of suburban inhabitants and most often they are characterized as "wives of wealthy businessmen living in detached houses in the suburbs, their husbands leave every day for work in the central part of town and women stay alone in the green on the outskirts." The main benefit of the dissertation thesis is a summary of available knowledge about green widows and creating a comprehensive view on these issues associated with ongoing suburbanization processes; foreign research and knowledge are also reflected in the work. The most important finding is that phenomenon of green widows - in the sense of how the term "green widow" is generally defined - is perceived within the Czech Republic as a problematic topic mainly of the media. Phenomenon of green widows is not accidental, but it is currently overcome in the context of the Czech Republic, according to the author. Gradually disappears, and if really exists, so only to a limited extent, than to be described as a major socio- cultural problem of contemporary Czech society. The main part of the dissertation thesis is a qualitative research carried out in 2017 and...
