Documentary Photography
Kumermann, David ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee) ; Kolář, Viktor (referee)
The text deals with documentary photography as an autonomous practice. The starting axiom for any further deliberations states, that photographic documentary is based on effort to eliminate any possible manipulation. This manipulation is usually understood as some mechanical intervention in the otherwise automatic process. If, however, the role of a photographer is reflected, we understand the manipulation as an ethical rather than a mechanical problem. The meaning of photography is always viewed within certain cultural context. A solitary photograph is always polysemic and opened to a manipulative ideological abuse. Photographic documentary works with a collection of photographs, thus providing more complicated but also more exact message. This is how possible manipulation has to be considered. The authorship must be understood as responsibility for the photographic message. The authorship is not only the fact of taking the pictures but also their selection. Brief historical excursion establishes an approach to the search for the genealogy of a documentary. It also concerns the ?language? of photography and its ability to carry certain meanings. Journalistic and documentary photography emerged as a single practice. Photographic documentary as we know it got its autonomy by separating itself from journalism. The place of documentary photography vis-à-vis art and journalism is discussed. . The last part concerns documentary photography as a stream of various tendencies and approaches. It suggests instruments to reflect this diversity. It also deals with the traditional document in relation to practices that attempt to liberalize the concept of documentary photography and allow in tendencies that are based upon manipulation of the photographic meaning. Documentary photography is an authentic reflection of the world, based on the author´s responsibility for his message. That is the fundamental principle: Documentary photograph has to be judged not only in aesthetic terms but also by its truthfulness.

The first of them - "Materialization of human being´s spirits", considers origins of spiritualism (for example work of William Mumler). The second part - "Levitation of insentient subjects", discusses works of Frederick Hudson and Edouard Isidor Buguet. The third part - "The unidentifiable phenomenons", treats of concrete examples of such phenomenons and about Kirlian´s photography. The last chapter is called "The Czech occult photography". The conclusion is a kind of contemplation about perception of the occult photography in present and in past, about differences between this perception in our country and abroad, and also confrontation with other kinds of visuality.
Significancy of photography in the context of history of art and in the context of visual studies
Stecker, David ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
Do we currently find ourselves at the divide of qualitative change in creative processes? Are we witnessing the end of the grand era of European culture model, the meaning of which has been immense and, in the course of two thousand and five hundred years, capable of reflecting feelings and fates of European nations with unprecendented plasticity? Are we to proclaim final exhaustion of this era and beginning of new aesthetics of postmodernism? Or shall we consider it a mere episode, an enclave with amusing, creative parameters full of freshness and playfulness which, while not guarding the boundaries of authorship, will after some time prepare a return to the once abandoned traditional model, enriched by these newly discovered traces and expanded to follow further adventures of creative search? I love controversial questions, I love dreaming about uncertain destinies, open endings, surprising solutions. Let's step inside this story, then.
Nesprávný výklad obrazu středního východu v médiích.
Puc, Jurij ; Dvořák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kolář, Viktor (referee)
The thesis analyzes today?s image interpretation of the Middle East. It would suffice to say that our impression of the Middle East and its current political situation is far from positive. An analysis of the development through history was made, to better understand why do we have such an understanding of the Middle East. Does the adjective Islamic carry a negative image, and if so, why? An analysis of current day media portrayal reveals that the west sometimes lack criticism to objectively judge the images it receives from the Middle East. An overview of different photographic media reveals the potential misinterpretations western infatuation with the image has created.
