A closer approach has been given to three chosen parts as the representatives of the program - two reports and one interview - which should make the structure and the coverage of the program easier to understand. The first report talks about the idea of pregnant men, the second part is an interview of the editor-in-chief of the British lifestyle magazine for men, Attitude, and the third (a report) covers transsexual people and the possibility of surgery in order to change their sex. A detailed analysis focuses on all three parts of the program: the visual, auditive and textual part. Albrechtová, Eva ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Lábová, Alena (referee)
Diploma thesis "A Comparative Semiotic Analysis of Týden and Newsweek magazine front page photographs" deals with a way of reflections of the modern myths that construct a recent media discursus on the front pages of Czech and foreign weekly magazines. The basic tools of media studies like a sign, code, myth, social construction of reality, representation and stereotype are applied in ten front page photographs of Týden and in the same number of photographs of Newsweek. Their substance is introduced in a theoretical part. The text using semiotic analysis describes the signs used in the first and the second stage of denotation, decodes their hidden meanings, explicates and compares identified dominant ideologies, which are comprehended as artificial constructs from the Barthes's approach point of view. It comes to a discovery that in spite of different time and economic spaces a supposed dissimilarity of mythologic traditions couldn't be proved. Exercitation of media contents in a global scale on the other hand acknowledges a proximity which has not been anticipated.

Argument in a myth, myth in an argument
Čaban, Martin ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
The main goal of this paper was to try to discover and describe the conceptual relationship between argument and myth. For this purpose we created a methodological instrument established as a combination of methodology developed by Trudy Govier (1997) for evaluating arguments and the barthesian methodology of discovering myths in texts of the public discourse (Barthes, 2004). As we had to demonstrate this relationship on some part of the public discourse, we made a sample of 24 commentaries from three Czech dailies, because the tradition of the genre and also some weakening genre-normatives describe the commentary as a text structure which is supposed to contain not just the opinion of the author, but also some reasons for accepting this opinion, some evidence for it, somekind of defending the author's point of view. In one word - a commentary is supposed to contain some argumentation. Commentaries as a part of the newspaper are also a part of the public discourse and as such they, according to barthesian concept of myth, should be bearing some characteristics of this discourse, among which the myths are of a considerable importance.
