Limits of conditionality policy in EU foreign policy
Radačičová, Simone ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The thesis deals with the analysis of the concept of conditionality that is applied in European Union's extemal relations with Cuba. The theoretical background determinates the conditions that can influence the efficiency of conditionality when applied to the developing countries. The relationship between Cuba and the EU is based on the Common position which was agreed in 1996. It set conditions that Cuba has to fulfill in order to normalize its links with the EU. In the 90s, EU ušed the positive conditionality with mixed results, but following the events of the spring 2003, the EU member States agreed on a tougher Stance, i.e. the adoption of diplomatic measures, in fact the negative conditionality. This approach brought a couple of negative effects and challenged the EU's influence on Cuban politics. Following the review the EU member States suspended the sanctions and in 2008 abolished the remaining diplomatic measures. Despite of its limits, the conditionality applied in the framework of realistic policy remains to be an important element in the relations between EU and Cuba. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Politics of National Reconciliation within Anti-Francoist Opposition until the Transition to Democracy
Hloch, David ; Mejstřík, Martin (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The bachelor thesis presented here deals with the developments and circumstances accompanying the phenomenon of the national reconciliation policy in Spain between the years 1955 through 1975. It aims to answer a question to what a degree these conciliatory endeavours proved to be successful, i. e. what their actual outcomes were, but it also deals with the impacts of these endeavours upon the Spanish society after the dictatorship's fall. The thesis is conceived as a case study whose contents are represented by the theoretic delimitation of the notions related to the issue of a divided society and its reconciliation, the introduction of the key players active in the reconciliation process, and, last but not least, the tracking of the development itself of the process, using the example of the behaviours displayed by the Communist Party and the Catholic Church. The thesis demonstrates that these conciliatory endeavours actually were successful, whereas their impact upon the subsequent development of the Spanish society was indeed substantial, as it resulted directly in the adoption of the oblivion pact policy. Even this finding can be perceived as being somewhat questionable though, since the crimes and the victims of the war and dictatorship period have failed to be acknowledged just because of it.
The impact of the economic crisis on the nationalism of Catalonia
Risingerová, Karolina ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The thesis is focused on the Catalan nationalism as the nationalism of the nation without state and its changes during the economic crisis. The objective is to analyse potential impact of the economic crisis to the Catalan nationalism and its changes after 2008, firstly at the level of public opinion, secondly and mainly at the political level in the frame of the analysis of the Catalan political parties in the Catalan parliament after the elections in 2006, 2010 and 2012. The parties are divided according their demands to the central government using the Dandoy's typology. The intensification of the demands for the independence in the Catalan society and its correlation with the worsening economic indicators, as the unemployment, Catalan debt or the changes of GDP, is analysed by the linear regression analysis in the first part of the study. The connection between nationalist questions and the economic crisis is analysed in the second part of the thesis. Three tools of the election campaign in 2006, 2010 and 2012 are used for this analysis - the electoral programmes, the electoral debates and interviews in television and the electoral spots. The conclusion of the thesis is whether the nationalist demands in the Catalan society and of the Catalan political parties increased and if so, whether it is...

Urban, Traian ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee) ; Abrhám, Josef (referee)
This dissertation analyses the europeanisation process and its impact on Spain. Its main aim is to find answers to the following questions - which Spanish institutions were mostly affected by Spain joining the European Communities/European Union and how successful was Spain in putting their political priorities on the top of the list of the European Union agenda. It analyses the main impacts and emphasizes the institutional changes that were put in place with the aim of fulfilling the European political requirements. Having done the analysis using the appropriate tools, this dissertation comes to a conclusion that the Spanish membership in the European Communities/European Union had an important impact on domestic institutional structure and the political system. It also shows that in certain aspects Spain was able to push its national interests and to influence the European integration process in the areas of its priority interests. On the other hand, this dissertation also comes to a conclusion, that with the growing number of member states and the impact of economic crisis Spain has lost its productive power that was characteristic for this country until the end of 2004. Spanish sport in era of francoism and its political exploitation
Balík, Jiří ; Urban, Traian (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis "Spanish sport in era of francoism and its political exploitation" deals with the use of sport in different policy sectors of Franco's regime. It examines how much sport reflected official state policy. The first part focuses on internal sport organization, which shows the domination over the entire sport sector. The second part of the thesis deals with the reflection of francoist internal policy in sports. Thus it analyses physical education as a tool for political indoctrination and top-level sport as a device to maintain social political passivity. Further, it analyses the centralist policy of the regime represented by the support of selected sport clubs and orientation of sport events to the capital city - Madrid. The third and final part defines use of sport in foreign policy. The thesis as a whole concludes that the projection of regime policy in sport is completely natural and that the regime didn't depart of its overall policy while using sport.

Regional political parties and the European Union: Case study of Spain Abstract The diploma thesis "Regional political parties and the European Union: Case study of Spain" focuses on the area of the regional parties on the stage of the European Parliament, a subject which has not been analysed thoroughly in the past. Special emphasis is placed on the analysis of this phenomenon on the case of the Spanish historical regions (Catalonia, Basque Country, Galicia) which are a recognizable proof of the remarkable institutional strengthening in the framework of a regionalized unitary state. The methodology of triangulation was used for the analysis of this issue as the data of the diverse type (i.e. electoral results, party's material etc.) have been put together through different methods (as a qualitative and quantitative content analysis, deductive and comparative approaches) with the aim to reveal the complete character of the issue and to reach the objective results as possible. The study focuses on the analysis of the regional parties on the European level through their cooperation in the European federations of the political parties as well as the framework of the political groups in the European Parliament. The emphasis is also placed on the analysis of the own work of the members of the European Parliament...
Spanish-Maroccan Diplomatic Crisis (2001-2003)
Juklová, Jana ; Perottino, Michel (advisor) ; Urban, Traian (referee)
The thesis deals with the analysis of problematic fields in Spanish-Maroccan relations, in particular it focuses on the course and causes of the diplomatic crisis between 2001 and 2003. The theory of interdependence applied to the bilateral relations between Spain and Marocco represents the basic background for the analysis. In theory the pragmatic approach of consecutive Spanish governments should have a conflict prevention effect and thus it should cause the limitation of use of force. However, the diplomatic crisis shows that the development of cooperation between the neighbouring countries and the increasing dependence were not able to prevent the increasing tension between Spain and Marocco. This tension is mainly caused by the issues related to the immigration from North Africa, problems linked to fishery, the dispute of Western Sahara and the Spanish North Africa territories of Ceuta and Melilla that are claimed by Marocco.
