Frequency analysis of handshapes in selected Czech sign language dictionaries

in English This work focuses primarily on the handshapes and their frequency in the selected Czech sign language dictionaries. The main aim was to analyze the occurence of handshapes in two types of Czech sign language dictionaries (general and terminology) and compare them. A secondary aim was to analyze the handshapes of active and passive hand in these dictionaries and to analyze types of signs. The last aim was to get information about handshapes in foreign sign languages and compare their most frequent handshapes with my analysis results.
Aphasia in Czech Sign Language Users

(in English) The topic of the bachelor thesis is the manifestations of aphasia in deaf people - Czech Sign Language Users. The basic definition of this disorder is presented and the existing considerations about the localization of language in the brain are described. Attention is also focused on the contributions of linguistics to the study of aphasia. The central part of this thesis is concerned with aphasia in sign language. It describes the manifestations of this speech disorder in the foreign sign languages studied so far. The work includes two case studies of deaf patients - speakers of Czech sign language who show manifestations of the fatal disorder due to acquired brain damage. The case studies are aimed at describing different representations of aphasia in different language levels.
Norwegian Sign Language - History and Present

The bachelor's thesis focuses on history and current status of Norwegian Sign Language, one of the oldest and largest minority languages in Norway. The aim of the thesis is to give a chronological overview of the main historical events associated with the Norwegian Deaf Community and their language. The thesis deals with the first mentions of Norwegian deaf people and their communication in written sources, the formation of Norwegian Sign Language in the first school for the deaf in the eighteen fifties and the development of dialects in the context of establishment of new schools. The thesis deals also with the repression of Norwegian Sing Language by oralistic tendencies by the end of 19th and most of the 20th century and attempts to create a common Scandinavian Sign Language and a standardized Norwegian Sign Language. Another topic described in this thesis is ta start of research and linguistics of Norwegian Sign Language in eighteen eighties and related changes in attitude towards the Deaf Community and their language which contributed to legislative changes reflected in the status of Norwegian Sign Language, deaf people and their right to education. Learning Disabilities in Hearing-impaired Children

(anglicky): The bachelor thesis discusses a topic of specific learning disabilities in hearing-impaired children, therefore deaf and hard of hearing children. The aim of the paper is to describe the current state of research in the area of specific learning disabilities in hearing-impaired and to map the current approach to these children in special education centres in Czech Republic. For mapping of the current work with hearing-impaired children with specific learning disabilities the results of a research are used. The research was carried out through interviews with several special education centres' employees. The analysis of the interviews showed that work procedures used with this population in Czech Republic are not very elaborate and unified. Diagnostic methods and approaches to education of deaf and hard of hearing children with specific learning disabilities are largely dependent on individual centers. Fingerspelling: Teacher's strategies when educating Deaf children in the preschool period

This bachelor thesis deals with various fingerspellings and strategies of their usage as we can find in home and foreign literature. Then it focused on using them in education system in kindergarten for kids with a hearing impairment. The goal of my thesis is to introduce selected strategies and put them in the right conceptual framework. Then describe their forms with benefits and limits of their use. I look at this issue in wider context and also with aspects of history. Part of this thesis is analysis of education programs of six Czech kindergartens for kids with a hearing impairment. This analysis focuses on using fingerspelling in teaching community that works with kids with a hearing impairment. The final apprenticeship exam according to a unified assignment - a description of the current state in selected secondary vocational schools for the Deaf in the Czech Republic

This bachelor thesis focuses on the final exam which was, in 2014/2015, unified for all the graduates of secondary schools providing secondary education with apprenticeship certificate. The point of this thesis is to analyze said final exam in certain hand-picked secondary vocational schools as well as some vocational schools for the Deaf. Furthermore, this study deals with the process of applying this mandatory unified assignment, how the individual needs of a student are met, how the supporting measures fit in and how the traditional approach affects these changes. In the second part, the research survey, the method of content analysis of curricular documents (framework educational programmes and school educational programmes), observation during final exam and semi-structured interviews with teachers has been used. The comparison of sign language interpreters working at universities in the Czech Republic and in Finland

This bachelor thesis presents a comparative analysis between sign language interpreters' education working at universities in the Czech Republic and Finland. The paper consists of two segments: theory and research. The aim of the theoretical component is to describe the specifics of interpreting at universities based on relevant legislation and sources and to present the educational systems and training possibilities available in both countries. The research is based on a survey among sign language interpreters from the Czech Republic and Finland, which aims to reveal their actual level of education and degree of satisfaction regarding their current professional situation as interpreters at universities and the quality of their own education. The thesis, thus, collates information from the theoretical and research components to analyze and contrast sign language interpreters' education in both countries. Corpora od sign languages

The purpose of this thesis is to describe specifics of sign languages corpora creation and structure and to design a form of a corpus of Czech Sign Language. These specifics are illustrated on two specific foreign corpus of sign languages. The first part of the thesis tells basic information about corpus linguistics and sums up characteristics related to a sign language corpus and also a corpus of a spoken language. The thesis deals with a general description of the steps that are necessary in the process of creating a sign language corpus. Major part of the thesis is devoted to describing two foreign corpora of sign languages - the corpus of Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and the corpus of German Sign Language (DGS). Both of the corpora include information about how they were created and their structure, i.e. data collection and data processing, a selection and creation of an appropriate software. While the part dedicated to Auslan describes the process of annotation of language data in detail, the part about DGS is more focused on the elicitation process. The possibility of forming a Czech Sign Language corpus is outlined in the conclusion of the thesis, as well as a proposal of its possible form.
Closed Captions for the Deaf in Czech Movies on DVDs

This bachelor thesis focuses on hidden subtitles in the Czech feature films on DVD for deaf audience. According to Act. No. 249/2006 distributors have been obliged to provide DVD media with the Czech feature films with subtitles for deaf audience. The aim of the thesis is to compare this legal regulation with the legislative status in selected European and non-European countries as well as to map out the observance of this Czech legal obligation according to the basis of the DVD production analysis from years 2007-2016 and finally to define the prevailing strategies that are in place for creating subtitles for deaf audience on DVDs in the Czech Republic.
