The evolution of the obsession phase of the Vichy syndrome: Klaus Barbie in the articles of Le Monde 1988-2017
Šrédlová, Petra ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
Petra Šrédlová Diploma thesis Abstract Abstract The trial of Klaus Barbie was an important turning point in the French memory of the Vichy regime. For a purpose of Barbie's conviction, the interpretation of the crime against humanity was changed in the French legal system. Barbie's victims were, for the first time, given the opportunity to publicly testify. Furthermore, the trial provided an opportunity for development of the Jewish memory and the memory of the resistance. The trial of Klaus Barbie provided the basic legal and procedural framework later on used by the courts in trials with Vichy's criminals. Moreover, the personality of Klaus Barbie remained sealed in a negative sense in French memory, when he was often remembered on the occasion of various events. The aim of this diploma thesis is to prove that, on the basis of qualitative content analysis of articles by Le Monde containing the term "Klaus Barbie" in the period from July 3, 1988 to July 4, 2017, further development of the phase of Obsession of the Vichy syndrome can be traced, along with its thematic categories and intensity. This diploma thesis also argues that the memory development did not proceed consistently, but kept on returning in the form of various events in order to recall not only Klaus Barbie and his trial, but also other...

Extreme right aspects of Marine Le Pen's discourse during the presidential election in 2017
Waldová, Julie ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
In recent years, Marine Le Pen has been trying to steer away from the far-right past of the National Front (now the National Rally) to become a "party like any other" and thus become a part of the French political mainstream. Since Le Pen became its chairman in 2011, the party has undergone many changes through which the National Front has tried to normalize its rhetorics in order to regain its lost credibility in the eyes of the public. For this transformation, the term dédiabolisation is used, particularly in Francie. In 2017, Le Pen ran for the French president. Though Emmanuel Macron eventually succeeded in the second round of elections, 33.39% of the votes that the National Front candidate received may be perceived as a genuine return of the party to the struggle for political power. Thus, in the context of the growing electoral preferences of populist radical right-wing parties, this thesis addresses the "normalized" discourse of Marine Le Pen in the presidential election and identifies its far-right aspects. A detailed analysis both of her pre-election speeches and her political program then outlines the direction in which France could move towards under the potential rule of the National Front.
Representation of Syrian refugees in the Turkish mainstream media
Öztaş, Uygar ; Bauer, Paul (advisor) ; Váška, Jan (referee)
There has been an increase in the number of people migrating around the world in recent decades. The main reasons for this migration are mostly social pressures, conflicts, and wars. With the Arab spring, which showed its effect in the early 2010s, a civil war arose in Syria. With the civil war that had its influence in Syria in 2011, thousands of people had to take shelter in Turkey. With the rapid increase in Syrian refugees who took refuge in Turkey, this issue has become vital in Turkey's agenda. Many studies on the media and the representation of immigrants and refugees show that these groups are often negatively represented. In this research, news about Syrian refugees published in Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, and Sabah newspapers, among the best-selling newspapers in Turkey, are examined. In addition, the fact that the three selected newspapers have different political stances, this situation adds sample diversity to this research. June 2011 - March 2012 and June 2016 - March 2017 constitute the times of the sample. The first time sample represents the early times of both the Syrian Civil war and the arrivals of Syrian refugees in Turkey. In contrast, the second time sample represents the time that Syrian refugees are more integrated into Turkish society and not a new subject for Turkey anymore....
Changing the approach towards citizenship in the United Kingdom due to migration
Kycltová, Barbora ; Lukešová, Anna (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is a one-case study of the approach to citizenship in the UK and the way it has been transformed by naturalization policies and migration. The issue of citizenship became the subject of many academic debates at the turn of the millennium due to the large influx of migrants and racial unrest in the country, and the subsequent introduction of citizenship tests was met with considerable controversy. The aim of this work is to map the much-discussed issue of naturalization in the UK and based on an analysis of the content of preparatory materials for the citizenship test, provide a very unique and comprehensive picture of how the approach to citizenship has changed over the years. The method of qualitative document analysis is used for the processing of publications for civic tests, and the manuals are examined by applying a predefined typology of citizenship and integration approaches in the theoretical part. The thesis assumes that due to concerns about the lack of integration of immigrant communities and the consequent tightening of measures to obtain citizenship status, there has been a change from a liberal and multicultural approach to more restrictive forms of approach to the concept of citizenship. Based on the established analysis of the work, it is concluded that the...
The Site of Memory: National Museum of Ireland and Commemoration of Easter Rising in the Proclaiming a Republic Exhibition
Špína, Vladimír ; Kasáková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
The Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising (2016-2020) exhibition was opened by the National Museum of Ireland as a part of the Decade of Centenaries project to commemorate the Easter Rising. This thesis understands the exhibition as a place of memory, which on the occasion of the centenary represents the official memory of the rising, and it aims to analyze this memory. The exhibition is perceived through the SANE framework as a mnemonic formation and the emphasis is put on narrative of the exhibition. Analysis of which is based on presumptions of the new museology, according to which modern museums utilize either hegemonic (celebratory, status quo-maintaining) or counter-hegemonic (minority, status quo-denying) narratives. The content of the exhibition (texts, exhibits, photographs), which was documented by the author of this thesis during repeated visits in 2017 and 2018, is subjected to thematic analysis. By applying the thematic network method, nine so-called global themes - macro-themes depicting who / what, how and by what is the exhibition commemorating - are identified within the narrative of the exhibition. The thesis determines that the exhibition, despite expectations of the new museology, reinforces traditional myths of the Easter Rising and employs predominantly dominant narratives....
Conceptual History of the term Anthropocene
Bezkočka, Leoš ; Matějka, Ondřej (advisor) ; Bauer, Paul (referee)
The word Anthropocene has been used in academia in many cases in the last decade. Geologists and stratigraphers believe that man's influence intervents so much with nature that they propose to call by the term a whole new geological era. This would have far-reaching consequences for (social) science in terms of interdisciplinarity. Due to the topicality of the theme, the diploma thesis aims to monitor the intersection of the term Anthropocene using the conceptual theory of Reinhart Koselleck, and thus find out whether and how the word spreads to public sphere. The first theoretical part presents the sources, maps the reflection of the term in the literature of social sciences and puts the work into a theoretical and methodological framework from the perspective of the history of concepts. It introduces Koselleck's theory of transition phases and explanes its application to the research field using modified criteria. The methodological character of the work is a comparative case study, heuristically grasped by content (textual) analysis of a media text. The second practical part observes texts from two selected databases (Czech and British) and presents the results in order to find out the meanings the contexts around the term Anthropocene. The last part compares both geographical areas and...
