Comparison of Old Norse and Proto-Norse Noun Declension
Šimeček, David ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Štajnerová, Petra (referee)
Comparison of Old Norse and Proto-Norse Noun Declension The purpose of this thesis is to follow the development of noun declensions from Proto-Norse to the Old Norse (Old Icelandic) language. The first of the three chapters seeks to give a comprehensive overview of Proto-Norse noun declensions. This overview is based on the evidence of the older runic inscriptions and on reconstruction using relevant linguistic literature. Each of the declensions is presented in the form of a paradigm accompanied by commentary and quotations of preserved grammatical forms. The second and largest chapter presents a survey of Old Norse (Old Icelandic) noun declensions. The survey has two aims. The first aim is to provide a synchronic description of the Old Norse noun declension system which would not be encumbered by an excess of diachronic approach as is often the case in the traditional grammars of Old Norse. At the same time, however, it should show how Old Norse inflectional exponents and classes continue the Proto-Norse declensions as presented in the first chapter. There is also a discussion of some of the systemic causes leading to morphological changes in inflection. The third chapter sums up the previous diachronic analysis and questions the validity of the traditional designations of declension classes based on...
"He was a good farmer, he died in Greece." Activities of people of the Viking age and their appreciation in runic inscriptions and sagas
Podolská, Markéta ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Kadečková, Helena (referee)
This thesis is an analysis of the activities of people of the Viking Age based on runic inscriptions and selected sagas of Icelanders and one kings' saga. The first chapter classifies the activities mentioned in the complete runic corpus as well as the appreciated qualities of the commemorated ones. The second part focuses on the frequency of particular activities in the Icelandic sagas. The sagas are divided into groups according to the emphasis laid on certain activities. Subsequently, the results of both analyses are set in contrast and the differences in their idealised view on the activities of the Viking Age are examined. While the runic inscriptions emphasize the Viking and trade voyages and the ability of householders, the sagas' focus is on the voyages as well as on the fights, legal disputes and feud. Although both sources par- tially correspond, they accent different aspects of reality and are mutually complementary. Keywords: Old Norse literature, Old Norse society, runic inscriptions, sagas of Icelanders, kings' sagas
The influence of Latin on North Germanic languages, especially on Norwegian
Koliášová, Klára ; Štajnerová, Petra (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
The thesis concentrates on Latin influence on North Germanic languages, especially on Norwegian. First part deals with this topic from sociolinguistic point of view: relationship between Latin and domestic languages in Middle Ages, discerning contexts, where Latin was used, emphasizing the role of church, schools and literature. Second part concentrates on concrete examples of Latin influence, persisting to the modern times, especially loanwords, prefixes and suffixes, irregular declension, idioms. Original research concentrates on Norwegian letters from Middle Age, in Diplomatarium Norwegicum. Research about numbers of Latin letters and letters in domestic language, according to topic and time, in comparison with similar informations from Denmark and Sweden.
The language in M. B. Landstad's edition of Norwegian ballads: dialectal and Old Norse features
Korecká, Lucie ; Svevad, Thor (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse the language features in M.B. Landstad's edition of Norwegian medieval ballads that are different from the present-day standard Norwegian, and to determine which of these features correspond to the living Telemark dialect of Landstad's time, and which are vestiges of Old Norse and Old Norwegian. The hypothesis is that the folk poetry that Landstad collected in the Telemark district bears not only features of the local dialect, but also has, due to its bound form (rhythm, rhyme), kept some of the language features from the time of its origin (14th/15th century) up to the time of collection (the middle of 19th century). The thesis concentrates on the analyse of various language features in the field of morphology, sound changes and vocabulary. The analysis and classification of the language features will proceed on the basis of literature about the historical development of Norwegian dialects and by comparison with other texts written in the Telemark dialect and texts written in Old Norse and Old Norwegian.
Analysis of time as a narrative category in Old Norse sagas
Králová, Kristýna ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Kadečková, Helena (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to set up characteristic attributes of saga time structure and with concern to these to show how the Old Norse people understood time. Main attention is concentrated on the time structure of the family sagas. First, it is shown the principal of the dating in saga and how it differs from the principal of dating in annal and chronicle. I proceed to deal with the most common time indications to appear in saga and their role in the storytelling. The focus point of this thesis is a comparison of narrated time and time of narration. To support this intention, I use the three concepts of Gerard Genette - duration, order and frequency. Based on the duration concept, I try to investigate why extensive time leaps abound in sagas and what on the other hand appears to have been given some extra author's attention. According to the order concept, a question is discussed to what extent the saga holds the chronological composition. Within the frequency concept, it is compared how many times an event occurs to how many times it is narrated. In the following chapters the time structure of the kings'sagas and the legendary sagas is discussed. The crucial difference between the time structure of these and the structure of family saga is established. There is a conclusion to each chapter,...
Ásgarð, Miðgarð a Útgarð: mutual relationships and their interpretation
Michalíková, Jana ; Starý, Jiří (advisor) ; Kadečková, Helena (referee)
This paper attempts to systematize Old Norse cosmographical notions. It deals with two spacial cosmological concepts - the vertical and the horizontal one. At first, it examines each of these concepts separately, it introduces their structuralist interpretations as well as later critiques of these interpretations. Further on, it examines whether both of these spacial concepts are really sustainable in primary literature and whether their form really corresponds with structuralist models. On basis of critical approach to sources it defines a new model of verticality. The major focus of the paper is to analyze mutual reletionship of these two spacial cosmological concepts, to specify contexts in which they usually appear in the primary sources and to examine their function.
