Conit verdict in translation
Čížková, Kateřina ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee) ; Uhle, Dorothea (advisor)
V rámci této diplomové práce je provedena kontrastivní textová analýza textového druhu soudního rozhodnutí (rozsudku) na třech textových rovinách (makrostruktura, mikrostruktura: jazykové šablony a slovní spojení). V teoretické části jsou definovány pojmy textový druh, makrostruktura, mikrostruktura textu, jazykové šablony a slovní spojení. Prostor je věnován rovněž problematice jazyka práva a administrativního stylu. Analýza pracuje s paralelním (německé a české paralelní texty) a bilingvním (německé originály a jejich překlady do češtiny) korpusem textů. V jejím rámci je proveden popis makrostruktury (organizace obsahové výstavby pomocí dílčích textů a nadpisů), excerpce a vymezení slovních spojení a excerpce, vymezení a klasifikace jazykových šablon.
Translating drama: influence of the theatrical potential of drama on translating with examples on plays by J.N. Nestroy
Nováková, Alena ; Veselá, Gabriela (referee) ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor)
The objective of this paper is to identify the main specifics of dramatic text that play a decisive role for the text's transformation through translation. Our approach was informed by the assumption that dramatic text is already intended to undergo a further (theatrical) transformation. Also, we chose not to reflect extreme cases of stage productions such as mime theatre, dance theatre, etc. Given the scope and intent of this paper, it proved impossible to exhaust this very broad topic in all its aspects comprehensively; we have therefore strived to draw attention to key issues which must be considered when translating dramatic texts. We focused primarily on non-verbal cues contained in dramatic text. The theoretical part of this work is devoted to the category of the "theatrical potential" that is inherent in dramatic texts, its possible sources, and the theatrical code. We concluded that the dramatic text does not merely contain one single possible staging solution, but that the text allows for several interpretations, and thus for several ways in which to perform it. At the same time, we found that non-verbal elements are not contained directly in the text, whose material is solely linguistic code, but that the text gives rise to them. The assumption of a further transformation (through performance)...

Most of Schnitzler's life dates to the final period of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and since the empire included, among others, the territory of today's Czech Republic, Czech audience, too, were well acquainted with his work. Nevertheless, there have been no in-depth studies dedicated to the reception of Schnitzler's work in Czech lands, and apart from a few exceptions, the life and work of the Austrian playwright have never become subject of detailed study by...

Franz Werfel's novel "Barbara oder die Frömmigkeit" in Czech translations
Kloučková, Karolína ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee) ; Veselá, Gabriela (advisor)
The subject of this thesis is a translation analysis and a comparison of two Czech translations of the novel Barbara oder die Frömmigkeit by significant, Prague-born writer Franz Werfel. It is concerned with the only two existing Czech translations. The first one, by Josef Richard Marek, was published in 1931, while the second one by Radovan Charvát was published in 1997. The very translation analysis is preceded by a part concerned with the author and the novel in question. The historical, social and literary context of both the origin of the novel and the life of the author is presented. It can be stated, based on the previous research, that neither of the translations has been examined in detail so far. The thesis is therefore a contribution to the history and critique of translation. The thesis is divided into several parts. The first part introduces the research issues while it also defines the aim and the structure of the thesis. The second chapter is a brief summary of the Werfelian research. In addition to the autobiographical works, the focus is put on the theses originating from Czech and Moravian universities and on both Czech and foreign scientific papers and articles which are concerned with the novel Barbara oder die Frömmigkeit. The third chapter is related to the writer Franz Werfel. It...
Problems of the reception of Franz Grillparzer's plays with themes from Czech history and mythology
Sojková, Hana ; Svoboda, Tomáš (referee) ; Veselá, Gabriela (advisor)
The thesis discusses problems of the reception of the work of the prominent Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer by Czech audiences. An emphasis is placed upon the plays König Ottokars Glück und Ende, Libussa and Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg, which are inspired by stories from Czech history and mythology. Up to these days, these plays have never been staged in Czech theatres nor translated into Czech. Czech audiences did not accept them because of the way the dramatist depicted Czech history and harsh criticism of Czech people which mostly appears in the tragedy König Ottokars Glück und Ende. The first biographical part of the thesis is devoted to the life of the dramatist and the conditions in which his works were written. Knowledge of these factors is crucial for an understanding of the way Grillparzer employed historical motifs into his works. The three dramas are thoroughly analysed and compared with Czech tradition. Their important German productions and reviews are discussed in shorter chapters. Receptions of all Grillparzer's plays staged in the Czech lands and all studies and articles on the dramatist himself written by Czech critics are accounted. This study offers a survey of the process of the formation of the relationship of Czech audiences to Grillparzer's works from the production of his first...
