Burianová, Kateřina ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
Genocide in Rwanda represents a significant historical milestone on global and regional level. The events in Rwanda in 1994 caused deaths of approximately one million people and showed that the international community's passivity towards ongoing genocide led African leaders to believe that the resolution of conflicts on the continent is primarily their responsibility. The Organisation of African Unity, as a key organisation unifying African states, was the best institutional instrument to ensure continental safety. However, the organisation faced several problems, so the Sirte Declaration on the establishment of the African Union was accepted in 1999 to replace the existing Organisation of African Unity. In 2002, the organisation's first official summit was held. The thesis examines the extent to which Rwandan genocide has influenced the development of the African Union, in particular on the issue of access to security and the concept of state sovereignty. Rwandan genocide is treated as an exogenous shock and a historical milestone, which has significantly influenced the thinking of changing the approach to conflict resolution and the concept of sovereignty. The theoretical framework of thesis is formed by a constructivist conception of sovereignty and an exogenous shock that completes the overall...

The thesis consequently analyses the functioning of the UN as a whole, its actions in respect of preventing the conflict and the following genocide, and whether it is only the UN who deserves the blame for the failure and infringement of the Arusha Peace Agreement.

Azawad: history and causes of an attempt to declare independent statehood
Čepičková, Lucie ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
This bachelor thesis "Azawad: history, causes of an attempt to declare independent statehood", analyses conflict in Mali, the roots of which go back to precolonial period. The aim of the first part is to describe the historical development of Mali and highlight situations that preceded the conflict between the Tuaregs and the Malian government which led to the attempt to declare an independent state of Azawad in 2013. However, geography of the territory of Mali played a great role, as evidenced Jeffrey Herbst's theory, which highlights the size of the state, population distribution and density of infrastructure. The second part is focused primarily on this theory and applies it to the area of Mali, which answers the question of whether Azawad would be a viable region purely in terms of geographical territory.
Astropolitics of extraterrestrial bodies within Solar system
Doboš, Bohumil ; Romancov, Michael (advisor) ; Kofroň, Jan (referee)
The work deals with geopolitics of inner solar system with focus on extraterrestrial celestial bodies. First part deals with definitions, delimitation of researched territory, and definition of researched questions. Afterwards, we deal with basics of astrophysics which is necessary precondition for understanding specifics of astropolitics and the issue of space- faring actors. Here, both state and non-state actors, their capacities and ability to become colonizing actor, are assessed. The work continues with exploration of single celestial bodies - Earth's Moon, Mars and its moons, and smaller bodies like asteroids. The final chapter scratches the issues crucial for space colonization such as sovereignty and weaponization. Based on these factors, few models of space colonization are presented. Conclusion then sums up all our findings and geopolitical map of "blue planet's" neighbourhood is presented.
The New Middle Age: Theory of Irregular
Doboš, Bohumil ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
Thesis deals with the issue of the conceptualization of the post-Westphalia world system by using the New Middle Age theory with focus on its geopolitical aspects. First the theoretical concepts concerning state, sovereignty, and the basis of the neomedievalist world view are tackled. After creating a theoretical tool to assess the appearance of the neomedieval world order we apply the criteria on four selected case studies - Somalia as an example of failed state, Pakistan as failing state, the European Union as a supra-state entity, and the People's Democratic Republic of Korea as a classical example of Westphalia-type state. In the conclusion the four case studies are brought together and our findings lead to the creation of an analytical tool which can be used for understanding basic geopolitical issues of different territories.
