Kantarová, Kateřina ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Čmejrková, Světla (referee) ; Kropáček, Luboš (referee)
The thesis deals with Czech-Arab interactions from the perspective of Czech native speakers, namely with the analysis within the work communication domain. It briefly introduces the situation of the Arab community in Teplice and the specific conditions related to the presence of Arab clients in Teplice Spa. The thesis applies the Language Management Theory which focuses on real interactions as sources of language problems. Interactions between employees of company A and their Arabic communication partners are the objects of the empirical research. Through interaction interviews the stages of language management process are analysed on the language, communication and sociocultural level. The aim of the study is to provide an authentic picture of intercultural interactions and to identify the real problems which the participants solve. Data analysis revealed that Czech native speakers showed a greater degree of tolerance for language deviations and adjustment designs which was due to the application of contact norms. When evaluating and creating plans on the communication and sociocultural level the Czech native speakers applied internal norms which resulted in numerous negative evaluations and mostly zero adjustment designs. The thesis points to the advantages and limitations resulting from the application...
Sequential and Prosodic Aspects of Conversation
Havlík, Martin ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Volín, Jan (referee) ; Zeman, Jiří (referee)
This study deals with two phenomena which are closely related to the turn-taking mechanism in conversation. These are: overlapping talk and the use of prosody in turn-taking. Prosody is linked to the formation of the transition relevance place. I point out the aspects of conversation, including prosody, which shape the transition relevance place, and also how prosody is used in the projection of turn-yielding, or turn-holding. I devote attention to three basic aspects of prosody: pitch movement, intensity movement and articulation rate. Furthermore, I analyze how overlapping turns are produced, how they proceed and how they are resolved. The characteristics of overlapping talk are influenced by the types of conversation in which they occur: while in mundane, informal conversation they can last only briefly, usually produced as a means of mutual understanding, in political debates they are often prolonged, as they are associated with the efforts of speakers to take and hold the floor.

Nguyen Thi Thu, Trang ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Starý Kořánová, Ilona (referee)
Czech society is becoming more and more opened to the rest of the world nowadays. After joining European Union, Czech Republic began to acquitan and converge with other cultures and ethnics, so it became multicultural lokality, which is attracting interest of surrounding countries. There are many people of many nationalities living in Czech Republic and among them live many Vietnamese as well, whose count is about 60 tousand . Because I am Vietnamese borned in Liptovský Mikuláš , which is a city in Slovakia, and living in Czech Republic, I am used to find myself in multilingual situations. I am interested in communication betwen Czech an Vietnamese people since I was child. Later in my life, I began to translate and interpret voluntarily from Czech to Vietnamese and vice versa. These activities have offered me more chances to observe communication between Czech and Vietnamese people. According to these facts, it is my aim in this graduation theses to describe the communication between the Czechs and Vietnamese in economic context, especially in the Czech-Vietnamese company, but also in everyday shopping situations, and to identify linguistic, communication and socio-cultural problems of these situations. I used the langure management theory during my work. I was working with audio recordings, which were...
Slogans, images, arguments: non-commercial advertising in social context
Kaderka, Petr ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Nekvapil, Jiří (referee) ; Holšánová, Jana (referee)
This dissertation is devoted to the exploration of a new communicative phenomenon in Czech society - non-commercial advertising. I analyze advertising in the form of posters or billboards from a linguistic and semiotic point of view. On the structural level, my primary orientation is toward researching the constitutive elements of the advertisements, the relationships between the semiotic modes utilized, and the relationship of advertisements to other texts and genres from the discursive world of Czech society. On the processual level, I examine the way in which sense is made of the communicative object. The project is interdisciplinary in nature, connecting linguistic, semiotic, and sociological approaches, with a philosophical foundation laid in the work of Alfred Schutz. The text consists of two parts. In the first of these, I consider the topic from the analyst's perspective. Employing theories of the sign, genre, discourse, multimodality and argumentation, I analyze several tens of non-commercial advertisements which take the form of posters or billboards. The second part is devoted to the perspective of ordinary recipients. Using the method of focus groups, I investigate the interpretive processes of members of Czech society. In the concluding section, I characterize non-commercial advertising in...
Bilingualism management in the situation of language shift: Discourses, problems and the landscape of Belarus
The media dialogical networks in the communist Czechoslovakia
Tvrdá, Karla ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Ferenčík, Milan (referee) ; Schneiderová, Soňa (referee)
The media dialogical networks in the communist Czechoslovakia Abstract The concept of the media dialogical networks (DN) is one of the ways to analyse mass media communication; its theoretical background is M. M. Bakhtin's theory of dialogism and H. Sacks' ethnometodological conversation analysis. The concept of DN had been developed using data collected in the 1990s in the UK and the Czech Republic while in this thesis it is applied to data originating in a different context, namely in former Czechoslovakia in 1952, 1967 and 1972. The main data source was the national daily Rudé právo [Red Justice]. The difference of the context lies both in the time distance of the target period, as well as in the then dominant tone of massmedia content. As for the aspect of time, there is a longer gap between the examined period and the present, which is also connected to a different state of development of technologies used in journalistic practice. And then, there is the fact that in the examined period the contents of mass media production were adapted to the ideological requirements of the ruling political party. The analysis deals mainly with the construction of the DN, the categorization work of actors of the DN and with the way new actors of the DN are selected. For this reason, the methods of sequential and...
Language management in historic buildings with guided tours
Hanušová, Kateřina ; Sherman, Tamah (advisor) ; Nekvapil, Jiří (referee)
The presented thesis studies the language management of six historical objects currently maintained by the National Heritage Institute (NHI). With each, several different aspects were studied. Firstly, the aspect of organized language management, particularly the use of language when communicating with visitors, presenting the object publicly and organizing tours. The linguistic landscape analysis focused primarily on the visitor information system of each of the heritage objects. This provided crucial data for the study of the spatial use and distribution of languages. Furthermore, the matter of language ideologies and their influence on the language hierarchies was addressed. The last, aspect to be scrutinized, was the organizational structure of the NHI, particularly the levels responsible for language-related decisions. The thesis aims to describe the workings of such heritage sites from the aforementioned viewpoints, thus illustrating the language management process in the tourist industry.

Linguistic Gratifications
Novotný, Tomáš ; Nekvapil, Jiří (advisor) ; Sherman, Tamah (referee)
This paper aims to provide a basic overall description of the phenomenon called language gratification. In Language Management Theory this phenomenon represents a kind of metalanguage behaviour entailing a positive evaluation. Language Management Theory including language gratifications is presented in this paper extensively. Afterwards, various methodological procedures which can be used for obtaining relevant data are introduced. The use of these methods is then illustrated in the analytical part comprising a series of examples, while other sources of data are mentioned. Next part presents a basic typology of language gratifications, in comparison to the typology of language problems on the one hand, and based on the findings acquired during the work on this paper on the other hand. The problems related with the research on language gratifications and some research perspectives are discussed in the concluding parts.
