The Image and Role of the Grandmother in the Czech Family since the Second Half of the 20th Century. An Example of Three Generations from Eastern Bohemia

The dissertation deals with contemporary reflection of the role of grandmother and the changes of this role since the second half of the 20th century. The topic of the grandparenthood has been dealt mainly in the present perspective in the Czech sociology so far. The aim of the dissertation is to bring a deeper insight into the role of grandmother and to better understand the relationships stemming from the role. The historical-sociological approach which understands the role of grandmother as space-time conditioned is chosen to achieve the goal of the dissertation. The dissertation is specific by less usual view of the role of grandmother from the viewpoint of the grandchild. Individuals from three different family generations are put in this viewpoint. It allows to observe the image of the role of grandmother and its changes in the observed period of time. The goal of the dissertation is to answer three research questions: How has the role of grandmother changed on the basis of narrations of three family generations? What idea of the contemporary role of grandmother have three family generations? Which factors shape the performance of the role of grandmother in the view of the older generations? The construction of collective identity and collective Memory in biographical narratives of Czech Germans

The aim of the dissertation is to find answers to questions that are connected to the problems of the construction of ethnic/national identity and related identification signs. This discourse creation of collective identity is analyzed on the basis of biographic texts of the citizens of the Czech Republic who identify with Germans, and remained, after the forced extradition of the German-speaking population, for various reasons in the country of their origin. The research project is, from the territorial point of view, situated in the border region of Chomutov which has been for centuries formed mainly by the German population. Using the biographic method there has been recorded, in the course of the terrain investigation itself, a total of 50 biographic narratives of the representatives of three successive generations of this community. By means of analysis and interpretation of the content of these biographic materials there are primarily captured the collectively shared pictures of the past and important identification attributes by which protagonists of the oldest generation of this community form their ethnic/national identity. In this way it is clarified how the narrators themselves re-construct and re-interpret their subjectively experienced "we", at the same time defining themselves against...
The Odry region after World War II in life stories of its inhabitants

This Master's diploma thesis elaborates on the history of Odry region, particularly the period after World War II, when it underwent a significant transformation. The goal od the thesis is to do a thorough micro-historical research of the postwar history of the region with respect to the transformation of the formerly German areas into the reclaimed lands of the Czech nation. It is divided into several chapters. In the first chapter I evaluate the source base to the topic; I investigate various literature related to the transfer of the Germans and the frontier settlement (its regional provenance being taken into account), archival sources and narratives - memories of displaced Germans from the presently analyzed region and several examples of the recorded oral-history interviews. In other six chapters I elucidate the situation of the Odry region in particular periods: in 1938, during World War II, and in the era of the liberation, followed by the transfer of the German population and the process of a new habitation. The last chapter then discusses the postwar Odry region as a home both lost and obtained. Collectivization of the countryside in memories of witnesses from the localities Lhenice and Mičovice

The submitted thesis focuses on the period of forced collectivisation in rural Czechoslovakia and is a case study of the villages Lhenice and Mičovice. The focus of the work is to determine what images of collectivisation are still in the minds of the local residents and how this process affected the daily lives of their past. The theoretical section explains the concepts of everyday life, socialistic everyday life, memory and collective memory. It was conducted in the form of oral history method and archive research. Thanks to this approach the work illustrates view of witnesses who lived during the process of collectivization. It deepens our understanding of Czechoslovak modern history through the perspective of local residents.
The forced displacement in memories of Czech Germans

The topic of this thesis is the forced displacement of the oldest generation of Czech Germans; i.e. current Czech citizens with German or Czech-German origin. These people stayed for various reasons in Czechoslovakia despite the forced resettlement of more than three millions German-speaking people. By the means of analysis of biographical narrations this thesis shows whether and in which way the resettlement is present in memories of this generation. Besides, it scrutinizes the significance of this event for the generation in question and its memories. By the means of analysis and interpretation of the gathered narratives, the common features as well as differences are revealed.
The Image of Islam in the Czech Republic

The focus of this masters thesis is on the phenomenon of stereotypical images of muslims and islam produced in the czech society. The effort is given to finding out these simplified images a indetifying factors leading to their creation. The solution of this problém is based on quantitaive research, which is used to identify possible dependencies in muslim and islam perception on different factors. All dependencies are statistically tested. The image of islam, as percieved by the majority in the Czech Republic, is then constructed based on questionnaire survey, statistical resuslts and media analysis.
Everydayness of socialism in border regions demonstrated on the village Bedrichov in Jizera mountains.

The thesis deals with everydayness of socialism demonstrated on the selected village Bedrichov which is situated in the borderland between Liberec and Jablonec nad Nisou, two important towns of the Liberec region. In the thesis, there is compared the crucial period of socialism (from 1948 to 1989) with the era before the World War II and with the time period after 1989. Oral history which is a specific form of qualitative research method is used for gathering information about world, people and their lives. The first section of the paper describes the theoretical concepts used for studying of everydayness, memories and border regions. In this part is also presented and analyzed the result of the existing research of everydayness in socialism. The main section of the thesis consists of my own research and is divided into individual topics which reflect everyday life as percepted by people living in Bedrichov.
Delinquents or activists, stepping into the world of squatting

The work is focused on the phenomenon of squatting, specifically on the process of socialization into this subculture. That is demonstrated on the examples of participants of this specific group of society. The aim is to take hold of human transformation, how a man becomes a squatter. This bachelor thesis is divided into several units; the first, theoretical part is focused on terminology, definition of subculture, squatting, its division and history. Also the Turner´s concept of communitas is introduced. In the following, practical part, the attention is aiming at the history, values and activities of Anticommercial cultural and social centre Klinika. The main characters from ASC Klinika are coming to the foreground and their testimonies, observations, opinions and life stories are becoming the object of our interest. That allows us to look deeper into the world of squatting, into its sunny gardens just as darker recesses, and draws us nearer to the genesis of new members of squatting community.
