The poetry and thought of William Blake in the context of European spirituality
Visual representation of the Theban cult of Kabeiroi
Kolmačka, Tobiáš ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Stančo, Ladislav (referee)
The aim of this work is to explain the meaning of specific type of vases, so called "Kabeiric ware", for mystery cult of Kabeiroi, which took place at the shrine next to Boeotian Thebes. At first the work introduces a context of Greek mystery cults, then it aims at a significant comic aspect of the ware, in the last section the work interprets the role of comedy in Kabeiric cult using Ann Steiner's "Repetition theory" and Mary Douglas' joke theory. The work is based mainly on archaeological sources, especially local vases, but also on other votive offerings and remains of buildings. The work is limited to the period before 300 BC because of specific evolution of Kabeiric ware, since in the later period floral motifs are prefered.
Narratives and Religion: Particularities and Functions of Narration in Religious Context
Širl, Radim ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Lyčka, Milan (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyse certain aspects connecting religion and narration (which is understood here as a common human faculty to think and express oneself in the form of narratives). The first part of the thesis is concerned with methodology; first of all, the issues of defining narrative are introduced and a more elaborate definition is presented. A complete methodology is then formulated with a help of several authors (mainly James W. Pennebaker and Mary Douglas) in order to distinguish particularities and functions of creating narratives in religious contexts. Two main points are stressed here: that the content of the narratives is often concerned with problematic aspects of experience and that the expression of these narratives is beneficial for their creators. The second part focuses on several religious institutions concerned with creation of narratives which are interpreted with the outlined methodology. In this manner, the act of confession in Catholicism, prayer in Christianity and certain healing rituals are described and interpreted. Conclusions of this thesis should help the reader get a basic idea of the way created narratives in religious contexts affect their authors.

Czech satanism in the context of new religious movements
V roku 1991 založil hudobník Jiří Valter Církev Satanovu v Česku, resp. Československu, so sídlom v Brne.

Female rituals in ancient Greece from the viewpoint of modern interpretations
Hajdáková, Iveta ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Antalík, Dalibor (referee)
This thesis looks at two women's rituals practiced in Ancient Greece - the Thesmophoria and the Adonia - and their interpretations by Marcel Detienne, Hendrik S. Versnel, John J. Winkler and Barbara E. Goff. The aim of the thesis is to analyze their four methods of interpretation of the rituals and illuminate how they fit within the context of contemporary debates between structuralism and post-structuralism, and ideology and agency. The paper illustrates how the various methods of interpretation - if approached critically - may be found valuable for the analysis of ideology and suggests new approaches to studies of Greek women's rituals and of the process, in which gender ideology is produced in the rituals. The interpretations should also offer an insight into the manner in which the rituals addressed Greek women on the issues of their fertility, sexuality, and their position within the patriarchal society. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part deals with particular interpretations of the four scholars; the second one attempts to analyze their methodological approaches focusing on their assumptions and conclusions.
Field of ritual: a case study on the role of space in daily temple ritual of Gaudiya Vaisnavism
Huspeková, Tereza ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Ondračka, Lubomír (referee)
temple ritual of the Gauóa Vaiavism. The work attempts to develop a theoretical approach to a particular set of empirical data by merging together various analytical concepts and theories from different levels of theorizing on ritual. The interpretation is based on a selection of empirical data from field research which was carried out in a local Gauóa Vaiava temple in Kolkata, West Bengal in 2007. The thesis consists of two parts, descriptive and interpretative. The descriptive part is ordered according to the main analytical concepts employed further in the process of theorizing. It contains textual and audio-visual materials providing a detailed description of the studied ritual environment seeking to enable the reader to enter the field of research. The interpretative part attempts to view the data through a 'focusing lens' of the concept of 'field of ritual' which shows that the ritual environment can operate as a responsive matrix structuring the actions of ritual actors which is further structured by them.
Seiðr
Šebetovská, Michaela ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
SEIÐR Michaela Šebetovská AAAABSTRACTBSTRACTBSTRACTBSTRACT The thesis is about an Old-Norse practice called seiðr, which was performed as a prophetic and magical ritual, according to some authors similarly to shamanic ones. The emphasis is put on information obtained from the Old-Norse textual sources. Despite their fragmentary nature, the aim of this work is to make a well-arranged summary of the facts provided by these primary sources. The main subjects are the beings performing seiðr, their characteristics, place in society, equipment and conditions required for the ritual and its goal. This information is then used for interpretation and a detailed analysis of several aspects of seiðr.
