An extensible attribute framework for ProCom

This thesis is focused on the attributes concept of ProCom, a component model developed within The Progress Centre for Predictable Embedded Software Systems. Attributes are pieces of information of various types and levels of abstraction associated with the ProCom entities during the development of a system. Based on the analysis of the development process envisioned by Progress, the requirements for the attributes of ProCom entities are identified, and various alternatives of realizing attributes are analyzed. The chosen solution of highly structured, multi-valued, and extensible attributes is elaborated. The thesis also consists of the design and the prototype implementation of an attribute framework realizing and proving the feasibility of the proposed concepts. The framework addresses the needs of all actors involved in working with attributes throughout the development of a system: It provides an extensible, modular GUI for viewing and editing possibly highly complex information contained in atributes, an interface for the programmatic access to attributes, and well-defined mechanisms for extending the attribute pool by new attributes, new attribute types, and means for their manipulation. The framework is integrated into the Progress IDE, the main tool supporting the Progress development.

Mysterious creatures

Explore pictures of supernatural beings and other creatures which could be found in current visualizations of Fantasy genres, computer games, illustrations and films. Study and categorize visual and written materials, follow these fantastic creatures, how they look like and how the appearance of them changes through time. Track the source of the appearance by comparing modern sources and older pictures and also by studying old myths and legends. Research what inspiration how impacted the process of creating new concepts. Study and define terms such as imagination and fantasy. Through scientific research, try to map how the children imagine fantastic creatures and from what pictures and text their images come from. What do children find scary? Place-names in the area of Tornionlaakso

This bachelor thesis examines the topographical place-names Torne Valley, the area of Tornionlaakso in the north-west of Finland which can be considered multilingual. A brief introduction into the study of place-names is provided at the beginning as well as the survey of aspects which, directly or indirectly, have played a part in the creation of place-names in this area (inhabitants and history, language background or landscape features). The Names of Hockey Clubs in the Czech Republic

(in English): The bachelor's thesis provides a detailed analysis of the names of hockey clubs in the Czech Republic. In the first chapter I deal with chrematonyms in the onymic system, and especially with the position of this specific type of chrematonyms. I also compare the names of Czech hockey clubs to other chrematonymic groups of proper names. In the next chapter I collect material from available online sources. Another part of the thesis is dedicated to classification of the names. It is based on both motivational and formal method. Finally, I pay attention to other aspects, such as the number of individual components, grammar and spelling of the names (the use of capital letters, which is largely influenced by English, is stressed).

Castle names in the Pardubice region

The bachelor thesis addresses the classification of castle names in the Pardubice region. The introduction deals with the issue of creating names of castles from a broader perspective. It defines the basic criteria for creating a list of entries. The second part contains a list of entries including the names of the surveyed objects in the Pardubice region, which is primarily divided into primary and secondary names, further according to the method of creation. Based on the collected information, the bachelor thesis interprets the basic tendencies in the formation of the castle names in the region. It focuses especially on the compounds of German origin.

Between Morphology and Word-formation: the Grammatical Category of Number in Toponyms

The paper deals with the specific functions of the grammatical category of number in Czech toponyms. As proper nouns form a specific sphere of the language, also their grammatical categories may display differences from the core of the lexicon. In many toponyms the plural ending does not fulfil the usual role of the grammatical ending, for it does not express the plurality or the multiple character of the object (e.g. the fact that the object consists of several parts). The use of the plural ending is merely analogical in many toponyms, the analogy is based on mechanical imitation of the form of other toponyms. In these cases the plural ending functions rather as a derivative word-formation suffix than a mere grammatical ending. On the other hand, in some toponyms the grammatical function of the plural ending is still kept. The decisive criterion for the detection of the function of the plural ending is based on the details of the given naming act.

Colours in Finnish toponyms. Finnish Toponyms Starting with Hopea- (Silver) and Kulta- (Gold)

This diploma thesis examines the colour terms hopea ('silver' ) and kulta ('gold') in Finnish place names. The aim is to find out about the distribution of the toponyms starting with Hopea- and Kulta- by type of place (e.g. oronyms, hydronyms, etc.) and about the motivation of naming in these place names, and also about possible similarites and differences based on the colour terms used as the specific part in these place names. The first part of this thesis provides the theoretical background of colour terms study in general and the situation of hopea and kulta used as colour terms in Finnish. The situation of Finnish toponomastics is also briefly introduced. In the second part, the Finnish place names starting with Hopea- and Kulta- are analyzed according to the type of place they refer to and according to the type of motivation that can be behind the naming. Czech Toponyms in the Perspective of Cognitive Ethnolinguistics

This thesis deals with linguistic stereotypes of cities. Therefore, the object of our interest is onomastic material (oikonyms, ie. own settlement names), which, however, is viewed from the perspective of cognitively and culturally oriented linguistics. The main theory, which the thesis is based on, is J. Bartmiński's theory of stereotype (incl. the so-called. profiling). We have dealt with the names of three Czech cities that currently belong to the administrative unit of the Vysočina Region: Jihlava, Pelhřimov, Pacov. Following the methodology of Polish authors of J. Bartmiński's scope we have analyzed each of them in terms of three areas: language data, text data and empirical data. We found out concrete connotations of these names in Czech language, and on the basis of these findings of ours we have formulated their stereotypes. Besides the formulation of the three selected specific stereotypes, this thesis also presents some general observations about stereotypes of cities. It is esp. a case of a proposal the profiles (ie. general aspects, which are usually used in the process of profiling a stereotype), with which you can work in research on stereotypes of cities in general.
