Fluxusná Praha : the Visual Communication as a Driving Force in the Culture of Hybrid Flows. (The Ecology of Mind Applied to the Visual Context of Prague City)
Noera, Simona ; Fulka, Josef (advisor) ; Marcelli, Miroslav (referee)
This experimental research rises from the need to demonstrate how Bateson' s ecological model can be applied and expanded to visual communication. The purpose is to draw the relationships and mechanisms that create for us the world as an energetic vibrant and interconnected network in the contemporary culture, which is mainly based on visual communication, pursuing the goal of suggesting a theory for the metropolitan flows. This study is intended to be developed in two parts and has an anthropological - even if interdisciplinary - imprinting. The first part (narratively theoretical) will be focused on the main concepts of my research (creation of identity and avatars, social body, the city architectural body, relationships, non-lieux, visual communication, in-between, editing - mounting - bricolage, goods visual fetishism, visual anthropology, pattern) through authors the likes of Bateson, Canevacci, Simmel, Benjamin, Bataille, Baudelaire, Augé and more. The second part of this Prague city behave exploration will be evinced through the dialogic methodology (cf. Bakhtin), namely the narrative flow of voices that with the editing technique will create a polyphonic narration, proving my hypothesis. This narration will be strongly supported by the monographic documentary film, titled "Fluxusná...
Guilt and Forgiveness in Karamazov's Brothers from the View of Girard's Triangle of Desire
Havlíček, Petr ; Češka, Jakub (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The work deals with the theme of guilt and forgiveness in The Brothers Karamazov. It tries to prove that individuals who are afflicted by triangular desire are unable to feel their guilt and are unable to forgive. Only after they break this triangle, they can realize their guilt and can forgive - ourselves and others. It also focuses on the close links between the triangle of desire and the Zossima`s concept. Zossima`s concept is meant semiotic body and the main pillar of the story, it is expressed by Zossima`s phrase " We are all guilty for everything." It operates in the Brothers Karamazov as active and passive element that helps the characters to fight with a triangle of a metaphysical desire and that also serves as a measure of consciousness of guilt and forgiveness. Studied characters are Zossima, "mysterious visitor", trinity father Karamazov / son Dmitri / Grushenka and Lisa Hohlakov.
Psychiatry, mental illness and culture
Müller, Matyáš ; Komárek, Stanislav (advisor) ; Fulka, Josef (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to treat psychiatry and mental illness from the anthropological point of view. The topic is treated at three levels. First, I describe psychiatry as a specific culture's product, and I explore how it constitutes itself as an unbiased science. I conclude that in spite of developing its scientific aspect, its human-science aspect is neglected, stuck in the 19th century's paradigm of evolutionism. Although there is a number of sources of a new less scientistic and ethnocentric and more reflexive paradigm nowadays, it still seems to be more a vision than reality due to the institutional toughness of the present paradigm. Second, I study "mental illness" as an abstract concept. I ask if the Western psychiatry's classification is universal and I explore various culturally specific forms of mental illness and its conceptualizations. Third, partially grounded in my fieldwork, I ask how abstract psychiatric terminology is embodied in a concrete human being and how the sufferer's point of view differs from the one of the professional in the mental health care. The dissertation intends to show that despite all the three levels being interlocked, their unity is not self-evident but is always constructed and contested.
Genome reprogramming during the first cell cycle of embryonic development
Barnetová, Irena ; Fulka, Josef (advisor) ; Pěknicová, Jana (referee) ; Strejček, František (referee)
The sperm head contains highly compacted genome. This compaction is mediated by protamines. Sperm protamines are replaced by cytoplasmic histones after the sperm entry into the oocyte. Beside the proteins replacement, also some epigenetic remodeling occurs. One of the most studied epigenetic remodeling in early zygotes is DNA demethylation. This phenomenon was observed in some mammals (mouse, rat, monkey) but not in some other mammals (sheep) and what is more, in some of them quite inconsistent data were published (pig, human, goat, rabbit). In our work we were mostly concentrated on porcine zygotes and attempted to explain the reasons of inconsistency in observed data. Three factors were evaluated in our work - the technique of embryo production, sperm factors, and the oocyte quality. In the first part of the study (the technique of embryo production) we compared the zygotes produced by conventional in vitro fertilization and zygotes produced by intracytoplasmic sperm injection. The epigenetic remodeling was evaluated by immunolabeling. There were no differences between zygotes produced by the two mentioned techniques. The paternal genome was not demethylated in any of zygotes. The labeling with anti-H3/K9- me2 (anti dimethyl group on lysine 9 of histone 3) showed the positive labeling of both...
Beauty myth in advertising from the perspective of gender
Prágrová, Štěpánka ; Fulka, Josef (advisor) ; Kobová, Ĺubica (referee)
Diploma thesis called "Beauty myth in advertising from the perspective of gender" analyzes the gender climate through the construct called beauty myth. The phenomenon of the beauty myth is nowadays appearing in numerous connotations, for example, very much in advertising. In this thesis I analyze printed advertisements, which I subject a critical examination through specific concepts including the Barthes concept of myth and photograph. Advertising is one of the most powerful communication and information arms today. In today's society the advertising message has become a very strong handling tool that is able to change not only the customer's behavior and customer's requirements, but to a large extent his thoughts, opinions and actions. What means of customer acquisition does advert use? Is not one of them theory of lie which was mutated into the beauty myth? This phenomenon is presented here mainly from the perspective of feminist author Naomi Wolf. The results of my analysis of the beauty myth in advertising, however, disagree with Wolf's view and put them thus in opposition. Advertising and the beauty myth behave as a living organism that interacts flexibly to external stimuli and its responses to them promptly transmits back to the consumer through the communication channel of advertising. The...
Blood, Tears and Laughter: Emotional Aspect of News Content
Pudlák, Štěpán ; Fulka, Josef (advisor) ; Šafaříková, Radana (referee)
The diploma thesis offers a concept of emotional paradigm of news. Characteristic features of contemporary news are emotional content, afectivity, and themes of violent and sexual nature. The phenomena are interpreted as a result of proliferation of emotional paradigm, i.e. a way of creating news which aims to arouse spectators. Emotional paradigm is manifested in a number of aspects - in the discourse, on a visual and auditive level or in a choice of news topics. An account of relevant psychological and neurobiological theories is also included. The thesis reviews possible implications of functioning of the paradigm. Hence, it offers an alternative interpretational frame from the media studies branch.
