Queer journalists in the Czech media space
Jezberová, Gabriela ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
The topic of this thesis is the feelings of queer journalists in the Czech media space. The author interviewed 13 queer journalists from different types of media. The theoretical framework of this thesis is identity theory, feminism, liberalism, conservatism and queer theory. The research is designed to be qualitative, drawing on grounded theory practices to analyse how queer journalists' sexual orientation or gender identity affects their journalistic work through open, axial and selective coding. It answers how these journalists perceive the atmosphere in the newsroom, whether there are any barriers that make their work difficult, and what coping mechanisms they use to help them deal with stressful situations caused by their orientation or identity. The analysis also focuses on their perceptions of gender and sexual diversity in newsrooms, how their queer identity is reflected in the treatment of media topics, how they perceive the treatment of queer topics in the Czech Republic, or whether any obstacles arise in their fieldwork. In total, thanks to the three-level coding, it was possible to identify four categories that shield specific categories and encompass several problematic aspects. Thus, the basic themes are the field and newsroom environment, the impact of queer identity on media...

Colonial thinking of Czech travellers at the juncture of teh 19th and 20th centuries
Rychnovská, Anna ; Soukup, Martin (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
The subject of this diploma thesis is to look at the journalistic work of Czech travelers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries through postcolonial theory, using the example of orientalist Alois Musil. It draws primarily on the psychoanalytic reflections of Frantz Fanon, the essays of Aimé Césaire, and Edward W. Said's conception of orientalism. The subject of the thesis is also to look at Czechoslovakia's "colonialism without colonies", especially through two theories: the non-colonial orientalism of Sara Lemmen and the colonial exceptionalism of Filip Herza. The intention of the thesis is also to mention the history of Czechoslovak colonialism, which forms the context of Musil's work, and to summarize research that focuses on the Czechoslovak image of colonies and the colonized. These serve, among other things, as a point of comparison with the results of the analysis of this thesis. The main aim of the thesis is to find out whether Alois Musil's journalistic work contains stereotypes of colonial thinking, or what specific stereotypes are involved. Critical discourse analysis is used to analyze Alois Musil's newspaper articles, with the aim of critically focusing on the power relations in society that both shape and are shaped by discourse. The aim is to highlight the limiting meanings of...
Media reception of the works of Haruki Murakami in Czech and Anglo-American periodicals
Zlámal, Ondřej ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
This diploma thesis entitled Media reception of the works of Haruki Murakami in Czech and Anglo-American periodicals analyzes the critical reflection of three selected novels by the Japanese writer. The Japanese originals of the novels Norwegian Wood (1987), Kafka on the Shore (2002) and Killing Commendatore (2017) were published fifteen years apart and thus cover a significant part of Murakami's literary career. The time gap therefore made it possible to assess the evolution of critical reception. The theoretical chapters focus on literary criticism, as well as narratology based on the work of theorist Seymour Chatman. The practical part includes the analysis of the narative and interpretation of selected works, followed by the analysis of critical articles published in Czech, British and American periodicals. The thesis aims to answer the research questions focusing on the content of the criticism as well as its potential development between older and newer works. The aim of the thesis is to create a comprehensive view of the critical reflection of Murakami's work in Czech and Anglo-American discourse and possible differences between them, based on the reception of selected novels. The diploma thesis is complemented by an interview with the Czech translator of Murakami's works Tomáš Jurkovič, who...
The Transformation of the Literary Review in the Age of Social Networks
Kryštofová, Vendula ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Maňák, Vratislav (referee)
Literary reviews have changed considerably in the current fluid era and are still changing. This is due to new media, and especially social networks, where anyone can become a reviewer and professionalism and knowledge of literary scholarship is no longer needed as it used to be. Therefore, this thesis discusses the transformation of literary reviewing in the age of social media by examining the form, congruence and differences of professional reviews in cultural and social periodicals and instagram posts containing book reviews. The aim of this thesis was to find out what similarities or differences there are between reviews written by literary critics and book reviews posted on Instagram by ordinary users. The evaluation was carried out by analysing several professional reviews and several book posts on Instagram on three selected titles, namely Ostrov by Bianca Bell, Mezipřistání by Matej Hořava and Probudím se na Šibuji by Anna Cima, and then comparing these findings. The research section shows how literary critics and Instagram users express themselves in their reviews, what they consider important to convey, what form of review they write, and whether there is a difference in their final rating. Finally, the final findings of the practical section are formulated, including a description of...

I describe the central motifs and basic storylines of each series. The subsequent interpretation of the texts focuses on the specific portrayal of journalism in each of the series, analysing at least one...
