Current comunity aspect of planting houseplants in the Czech republic within and without social media
Vašíčková, Anna ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Košťálová, Petra (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with houseplant growers in the Czech Republic. Growers acquire houseplants mainly by vegetative propagation (through cuttings) from other members of the community, but they can also buy them from a chain store or specialty shop. Buying houseplants is more of a luxury for ordinary growers. Although houseplantshave been grown in a similar form since the 18th century, interest in them has recently surged again, especially among millennials and Gen-Z.This phenomenon is referred to in the media as the plant boom. Some of them use plant parent to refer to an emotional connection to their plants. This is mutually beneficial forboth the plant and its grower, with both parties providing care for the other. The Covid-19 pandemic has also contributed significantly to this phenomenon, reinforcing the emerging trend. In this thesis, I address the question of whether Czech growers actually meet the definition of the term community and whether they exhibit a sense of community - that is, a sense of belonging to other growers. The research was conducted in both offline and online spaces. I used semi-structured interviews, social media analysis and participant observation. The research did not show the presence of a sense of community, despite the fact that actors are actively engaged in community...
Contemporary witchcraft and collective magic in the Carpathian Ukraine
Muricová, Tereza ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
The thesis deals with the comparison of data collected by the author on collective magic from an anthropological perspective and several stories of the Carpatho-Ukrainian respondent (a Ruthenian or a Rusyn woman is a valid term as well) with fairy tale magic based on the studies of Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp. Morphology of the Folktale (Propp 1999) and the motifs appearing in the practice of magic in the studied location exhibit similar characteristics and contain hidden internal relations that the author hopes to reveal through the thorough analysis. The collected data via interviews were analysed using a comparative method with listed literary sources. The research question is whether the practices of witches in the Carpathian region of Ukraine could be interpreted identically as the motifs and characters in the Morphology of the Folktale and other studies (1999) by Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp. The timeline is between the period of approximately 40 years ago and the present. The respondent retrospectively gives an account of her experiences of encounters with witches and their consequences, or relays the stories of relatives who are no longer among us. The study explores whether the phenomenon of folk magic can be analysed using a similar method to folktales and fairy tales. Specifically, it...

The influence of the planned realization of the VRT railway terminal Ústí nad Labem Centre on the discursive construction of the future of the city from the perspective of chronopolitics.
Zářecký, Ladislav ; Gibas, Petr (advisor) ; Janeček, Petr (referee)
In the context of the planned implementation of the High Speed Rail (HSR) megaproject in the Czech Republic, speculations, stories about the future, revitalization discourses as well as positive and negative expectations related to the impacts of the project implementation are beginning to take shape and circulate in the affected regions and cities. The Czech Railways Administration (Správa železnic) is currently working with the possibility of routing the HSR Prague - Dresden through the city of Ústí nad Labem, the research site of the presented work, and with the possibility of building a special railway terminal in its centre, despite the original concept of territorial development. However, the exact form of the route and the terminal remains unclear, which, apart from the plan itself, causes a number of disputes and speculations. Some actors frame the project as a major opportunity for positive change in the city and the region, while many perceive the route through the centre of Ústí as a major threat and a radical negative intervention into the very fabric of the city, and for some the whole issue is elusive or ambivalent. The aim of this thesis is to describe by means of the method of discourse analysis how the narrative of the future of the city of Ústí nad Labem is articulated and...
Ilegální nálepky ve veřejném prostoru Prahy: Etnologická perspektiva
Mauer, Filip ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Pohunek, Jan (referee)
Although Prague is plagued with fly-posting (černá reklama), most residents don't give these a second glance, relegated in the mind of the viewer as nothing more than adverts. However, in major cities around the world, similar stickers are put up as political statements, advocating for any number of groups or theories or movements, reacting to current events, and being torn down or plastered over by parties that disagree with their message. It is the hypothesis of this paper that a similar scenario is playing out in the centre of the Czech capital. I wish to prove this hypothesis via on-site observation near the old town area (Staroměstská), and the tracking of fly-posters, their placement, message, and subsequent treatment. In an age where access to the skills and equipment to make high-quality logos, images, text and layout are commonplace, it is time to stop viewing this area as merely the domain of advertising and media studies, and treat it as an expression of urban culture. Keywords: illegal stickers, black advertising, Prague, graffiti, Urban, Streetscape.

Celebrating Jewish annual feasts by the Czech Union of Jewish Youth
Moravcová, Anežka ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Košťálová, Petra (referee)
Jewish festivities make an important part of Jewish culture. Their form has long stabilized and become fixed through years. This thesis would ascertain the importance of these festivities within the community of the Czech Union of Jewish Students, The community comprises persons from fifteen to thirty-five years of age. During my research there were sixty one members. These youths gather to celebrate important feasts in the Jewish year, and sometimes even to celebrate together the weekly feast of Sabbat with the comunity of Moishe house, as I was allowed to witness. This work examines the feasts through the concept of "performance", concept known from Victor Turner and widely used by Richard Bauman. The research was conducted by the means of empirical evaluation, structured dialogues, questionnaires. The study concludes the performance of these festivities shows signs of the so called "emergent quality", a term invented by Richard Bauman. This creative aspect is an important way of expressing and confirming the identity of the given community. It also reflects and reacts to the actual facets of the community, and so keeps its culture "alive". This work shows that celebrating the feasts with the Union may provide Jewish persons who do not belong to any strict division of Judaism with a sense of...
