The next is a presentation of the main features that attract readers and make this literature so popular. The paratext, a secondary component of the book (title, author, edition, the appearance of the front page ...), the technique of the narration and the characters could be considered as those features. In order to demonstrate these features of popular literature, one representative has been chosen, namely a crime fiction novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room by Gaston Leroux. Paratexts to Non-Linear Media Texts: Paratextuality in Video Game Culture Jan Švelch Abstract The thesis explores paratextuality in the video game culture. This concept coined in 1982 by Gérard Genette in the context of literary publishing has been throughout the last thirty-five years adopted by other fields, including television and film studies, and game studies. However, the recent appropriations of the paratextual framework significantly deviate from its original conceptualization and cause terminological confusion. Still, paratextuality has the potential to provide a unique insight into cultural practices across various cultural industries, including video games. Figuratively described as a threshold, the concept of paratextuality deals with often overlooked elements of media ecosystems, such as promotional materials or instruction manuals. In the thesis, I present a thorough critical review of the current state of paratextual research. Due to its unsatisfactory state, I propose an updated paratextual framework, which builds on the theoretical foundations of textual transcendence. Its more practical dimensions then acknowledge the cultural specificities of the video game cultural industry. In the empirical part of the thesis, I focus on video game trailers and analyze both their formal qualities as...

Králíková, Andrea ; Bílek, Petr (advisor) ; Špirit, Michael (referee) ; Kubíček, Tomáš (referee)
This PhD. Thesis "The Language of Images (The Image of an Author as a Paratextual Phenomenon in Cultural Transfer)" deals with the teoretical questions of the notion "The Image of an Author" and the way the term is constituted and its conections to a specific cultural space in the frame of cultural transfer. The Image of the Author is interpreted as a paratextual phenomenon which is on the one hand created through review acceptance and medial discurs in the cultural space, and on the other hand has influence on the way the text is accepted by the reader. The question of the image of an author is approached in the context of other paratextual elements, paratexts are from our point of view read as cultural (semantic) units, which participace on semiotic space of culture. The first three chapters form the teoretical basis of the thesis and focus on the theme of cultural transfer and paratexts. The core of the thesis is in its second part which presents four case studies about four different author's types in contemporary Czech literature (Jáchym Topol, Petra Hůlová, Jaroslav Rudiš, Miloš Urban). Each case study analyses the main points of their reception, the speech of the medial discourse and the way of their presentation and self-presentation. A comparison with distinc attributes of reception in...

Bibliografický záznam ANDREAS, Petr. Politika interpretace. Rétorické, diskursivní a textové hry v normalizační literární kritice. Univerzita Karlova, Filozofická fakulta, Ústav české literatury a komparatistiky, 2014. Vedoucí disertační práce: prof. Petr A. Bílek, CSc. Anotace Tématem této disertace je politika interpretace v normalizační literární kritice a publicistice (1968-1989). Práce kategorizuje a analyzuje diskursivní, rétorické a textové strategie, které používali literární kritici a publicisté (a jednotlivé profesní a názorové skupiny) publikující v oficiálním publikačním prostoru. Metodologicky vychází z konceptu politiky interpretace podle P. C. Hogana, rozvinutého o teorii jednání a teorii řečových aktů. V první, teoreticko-metodologické části (kapitoly II-IV) je představen a rozvíjen pojem politiky interpretace a analyzovány metodologické problémy interpretace literárněkritických a publicistických textů z normalizační éry. V druhé, analytické a interpretační části (kapitoly V-VII) jsou rozlišeny tři roviny politiky interpretace podle umístění ve struktuře kritického aktu a identifikovány kategorie rétorických, diskursivních a textových strategií. V třetí, závěrečné části (kapitola VIII) je zobecněno a syntetizováno poznání o podobě a fungování kritického aktu v normalizační éře. Annotation...
