Natural Catastrophes and Financial Development
Mikulíková, Pavla ; Horváth, Roman (advisor) ; Jakubík, Petr (referee)
Master's thesis - Natural Catastrophes and Financial Development Pavla Mikul'ıkov'a Academic year 2022/2023 Natural disasters affect lives of many people every year. Using a panel dataset of 214 countries from 1970 to 2021, this thesis analyses the impact of disasters on financial development, namely on depth, efficiency, access, and sta- bility, using fixed effects and system GMM estimators. The main findings imply that depth and stability are negatively affected by disasters, and the impact is more pronounced for lower-income countries. On the other hand, efficiency and access provide no consistent results. There is no type of disasters, e.g., biologi- cal or geophysical, that would have a significant impact on all types of financial development. The effect probably varies due to the different characteristics of disaster types. 1
Theology of earthquakes
ŠTĚPANČÍKOVÁ, Petra
The master thesis deals with importance and meaning of earthquakes as a natural process as well as natural disasters in areas where earthquakes cause heavy damage to lives or properties. The goal of the thesis is to answer the question whether God reveals himself and his divine actions in earthquakes provided that he discloses himself in all his creation in the natural world. A complete list of references on earthquakes in Bible has been compiled and it shows that earthquakes mostly precede or accompany very important events, theophany, and eschatological happening, which always point to God´s glory, power and magnificence. The thesis summarizes historical evolution of theodicy related to earthquakes as natural disasters. There is a paradigm shift from God´s responsibility to responsibility of humankind, in relation to structural sins of the rich against the poor who most suffer during the natural disasters. The thesis offers also synthesizing view on earthquakes as natural process, especially how they reflect God´s invisible characteristics, such as God´s power, glory, magnificence, freedom, wisdom, eternal activity, order, harmony, balance, and beauty.
Studie teoretické predikovatelnosti extremálních rozdělení pro přírodní katastrofy
Sabolová, Radka ; Zimmermann, Pavel (advisor) ; Kladívko, Kamil (referee)
The thesis deals with natural disasters from the statistical point of view and treats them as extremal observations. Basics of classical extreme value theory will be summarized and new approach based on maximum entropy principle will be proposed. Both methods will be used in order to analyze real discharge data observed at the river Vltava.

The impacts of natural disasters on japanese economy
Platlová, Drahomíra ; Stuchlíková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Zapletal, Petr (referee)
Japan ranks among the most developed countries in the world, nevertheless it neither can prevent frequent natural disasters nor their consequences. Although the government strives to minimise damage caused, those tragic events influence functioning of the state and its economic performance. The first Chapter encompasses general information, which shows the basics of natural disasters. The second Chapter focuses on Japan, in particular on geographic conditions of the country, alert systems and deals also with comparison of two major earthquakes Kobe and Tohoku.
Climate change and its effect on insurance industry
Landa, Josef ; Daňhel, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kiovský, Tomáš (referee)
Climate change is an undisputable fact. However it has not been found out yet with certainty what role does the human activity play and how is climate change influenced by nature cycles. A major role play greenhouse gases trapped in the atmosphere. These gases are linked to various issues, one of them being the global warming. In order to reduce the amount of emitted greenhouse gases, various conferences on climate change took place. During meetings participants have been trying to find a solution for gradual reducing level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Climate change will probably result in more severe natural catastrophes, according to renowned scientists. Most probably there will be a rising occurrence of tropical cyclones, severe droughts or a change in rain precipitation throughout the world. Future predictions are not clear yet and there is still no common agreement among scientists about how the future developments will be. However there is a clear increasing trend in the amount of insured losses, economic losses and the number of catastrophic events, which influences insurance industry. This trend could be caused by more elements, including increasing insurance penetration, increasing concentration of economic values or increasing migration into hazard zones. Climate change can also be partly to blame for the negative developments of insured losses and therefore insurance industry should play a major role in an effort to assess possible future risks in order to decrease its vulnerability to future risk developments. Indemnity rise makes insurance companies and the whole industry more vulnerable to insolvency and thus new ways to diversify risks are being searched for. Cooperation between public and private sector is one of the solutions which help to make almost uninsurable risks insurable. However, there are still risks that are almost unbearable by cooperation of these two sectors. Alternative risk transfer to capital market is one of solutions for mitigating the possibility of huge future losses. In the process of an alternative risk transfer, investors are participating in catastrophe risk development through e.g. catastrophe bonds. Bonds give investors an opportunity to further diversify their portfolio and receive an attractive yield in return to an exposure to a risk of a big catastrophe loss which could result in installment cut, installment annulment or even principal annulment depending on the severity of the catastrophe. Through these risk transfer methods catastrophe losses of huge extents can be spread to more parties, helping to decrease the risk of default of parties and thus increasing the probability of liabilities settlement.
