Nutrition in Acne vulgaris
LIAKH, Tetiana
Acne Vulgaris is a skin condition that can be affected by several different factors. These include hormonal imbalances and genetic predisposition from internal factors and stress, air pollution and diet from external factors. Medication has been the preferred treatment for this condition, however changes in lifestyle and diet has recently been identified as another approach to aid this skin ailment. Certain components in our diet such as vitamin D, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids can be beneficial for decreasing inflammatory responses in the skin and promoting overall better skin condition. Some evidence suggests that consumption of foods with low glycaemic index can also be beneficial. There is, however, inconclusive evidence about the effects of consumption of dairy and chocolate products on acne. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to monitor how diet can affect acne and to identify negative and positive effects of consumption of certain foods on skin condition. This thesis was done by quantitative method with questionnaires and participants of this study were individuals of 18-25 years of age with diagnosed Acne vulgaris. The results showed that diet can have an effect on acne. Some components showed to have a negative impact on acne and skin condition in almost 3/4 of participants. Consumption of foods with high glycaemic index, chocolate products and alcohol were the most prevalent substances that caused worsening of acne. However, there was nosignificant evidence of the relationship between dairy products consumption and worsening of acne. The results showed that stress was a major factor in almost 3/4 of the participants on worsening of acne. It is possible, however, that this could be also due to changes in diet during periods of stress. The findings also showed that more than 1/2 of the participants do not regularly use dietary supplements that contain vitamin D, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. More than 1/3 of participants tend to avoid consumption of certain foods to aid with acne. It is crucial to note that every organism reacts differently to different types of food and that diet is not the only factor affecting the skin condition and acne. Nevertheless, adhering to a healthy diet can help reduce acne symptoms and maintain an overall healthy skin condition.
Food supplements in strength sports
KLEČKA, Jan
In this bachelor's thesis on Dietary Supplements in Strength Sports, I investigated whether elite athletes are able to consume sufficient nutrients without dietary supplements and what types of dietary supplements are used by strength athletes. I chose the respondents from three branches of strength sports, those sports are power triathlon, strongman sport and weightlifting. These are the leading athletes in these sectors in the Czech Republic and they are able to outline to me the topic of taking dietary supplements. The theoretical part is focused on the nutrition of athletes. In each section I have discussed a description of strength sports, including the history of strength sports, then I have discussed macronutrients, micronutrients and also the issue of dietary supplements, where I have described the history of dietary supplements and also their distribution. In the theoretical part I drew from books and professional journals. For the practical part of the thesis I set three objectives. The first objective was to map what types of dietary supplements are used by strength athletes, the second objective was to map what amounts of dietary supplements are used by strength athletes, and the third objective was to determine if a regular and complete diet provides the necessary amount of energy and individual nutrients. Ten athletes participated in my research, 9 men and 1 woman. I obtained data from them through a semi-structured interview and from their dietary records. The results show that the respondents are taking 10 types of supplements and 6 out of 10 respondents are able to take sufficient energy from their regular diet. The dietary analysis shows that respondents prefer a diet higher in fat and protein at the expense of carbohydrates, where a higher proportion of fat in the diet reduces the amount of food needed to meet the respondents' energy needs. It can also be observed that respondents do not place much emphasis on fibre intake.
Alternative nutrition - use and knowledge of PF JU students
DUNDOVÁ, Jana
The bachelor thesis deals with alternative nutrition and examines the knowledge and its use among students of the Faculty of Education of the University of South Bohemia. The theoretical part deals with basic information about alternative nutrition and discusses possible reasons leading to dietary change. It also describes in more detail the different alternative ways of eating. The most well-known dietary trends among students are vegetarianism and veganism, for which the pitfalls and possible deficiencies in the diet are discussed in detail. The practical part elaborates the students' knowledge and opinion on alternative diets, the relationship to healthy eating and the use of dietary supplements. In addition, it evaluates the representation of different alternative diets, the reasons leading to dietary changes, the perceived changes, or the ways for obtaining nutritional information. The results are based on a questionnaire survey with a total of 101 respondents. Of the total number of respondents, 10% of the students were vegetarian. Other alternative forms of nutrition are less represented. The Mediterranean diet fared best in terms of health benefits in the evaluation of alternative forms of nutrition. However, none of the students surveyed follow its recommendations.
