Characteristic features of today's society include fast way of life, mobility of people, change the way of life and social scenarios. Nowadays, at the time of the information society, life is closely connected to the development of information technologies (for example, people are not attached to workplace in the office anymore and can work from home). Urban and settlement development is influenced, as well, by a high and ever increasing degree of urbanization, globalization, increasing environmental devastation. Demographic and social structure of the population are changing. Society is constantly changing so intensely that housing fases with new requirements that it should be able to meet. This project is my effort to understand how approach to housing design changes or how it should change, as well as on my tries to understand how to create a high quality desing which will be able to satisfy current housing trends and needs. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic. It has features of post-industrial city with a large number of unused industrial sites. One of such sites is former Kohn's brickyard, which was selected for developing in this master's thesis. The site of the former Kohn's brickyard is located on land belonging partly to the cadastral area of Bohunice, partly to the cadastral area of Štýřice, and this is a very potential area for further development.

Archaeology and architecture of Meroitic settlements
Vrtal, Vlastimil ; Bareš, Ladislav (advisor) ; Onderka, Pavel (referee)
Meroitic settlements had long remained on the periphery of scholarly interests, although there was still only a limited degree of our understanding of Meroitic society, economy and daily life. During past few decades, archaeological research carried out at many sites in the modern Republic of the Sudan brought to light new information on the form, function and dynamics of Meroitic urban centers. We have become better acquainted with principles involved in their planning and with architecture of civic buildings, and perhaps most importantly, with architecture of ordinary houses. There were obvious differences between settlements in different regions of the Meroitic kingdom, that seemingly stemmed from local ways of land exploitation and state control of local population. Yet these were only few of many influential factors. The data obtained by study of Meroitic settlements can be further used to estimate Meroitic population or evaluate the form and degree of social stratification.
Garden is the only real world for the gardener: Case study of the garden allotments Cibulka and Technomat in Prague
Valešová, Irena ; Novák, Arnošt (advisor) ; Zandlová, Markéta (referee)
This work is based on the article by Jan Keller (2000) - Praise of Gardeners, in which Jan Keller mentioned garden allotments as places distatnt to globalized economy and consumerist lifestyle of today's world. The aim is to verify if the content of this article corresponds to the true situation in the selected garden allotments in Prague. This work can help to get an idea of the benefits of the garden allotments not only for gardeners but for all inhabitants of the capital. For this purpose, I conducted a field research accompanied by a number of interviews in the garden allotments. Technomat and Cibulka in Prague. I have gained a lot of informations about life in the garden allotments as well as about the relationship of the respondents to their own gardens. I watched whether and to what extend is the life in the garden allotments influenced by the economic, ecological, social and propert-legal aspects. Research shows that gardeners actually live a non-consumerist way of life and partly resisting market mechanism, but only inside of the garden allotments, not outside. Their environmental friendly behavior is due to external factors rather than internal as personal beliefs. The garden allotments do not have such important role in social terms as it may seem at the first sight, but on the other...

Chytrá a udržitelná města v kontextu vědecké a inovační strategie EU
Horniecká, Marie ; Žamberský, Pavel (advisor) ; Procházková Ilinitchi, Cristina (referee)
The thesis explores how the EU support to research and innovation towards urban sustainability is designed, what the existing EU intiatives striving for achieving smart and sustainable cities are. The analysis of theoretical approaches forms the basis for developing the definition of smart and sustainable city for the purpose of this thesis. An overview of the principal EU strategic documents which address urban sustainability together with European networks is provided in order to demonstrate the linkage to the research Framework Programmes. A separate chapter is devoted to the analysis of the most pressing challenges European cities face nowadays. Database of EU funded research and innovation calls and projects is examined (E-CORDA). Calls and projects related to urban areas are identified and juxtaposed with the urban problems. Final recommendations concern with social aspects of sustainability which should be, in the author's opinion, addressed in future EU research Framework Programmes with a particular attention.
