Literary and film Kytice or Problems of film adaptation and attempt to find kitsch

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to compare the two different medias, literature and film, and specifically Erben's and Brabec's Kytice, while detection of kitsch in the movie. In the first part of the bachelor thesis deals with the film adaptations of literary works, focusing on open and closed adaptation, as way as interpreting a literary text, as the original film, the semiotics of film and finally the narrator of film. On the literature as on the film this thesis is trying to look out narratological perspective. The thesis takes both media as a text types, which updats narrative. The second part is dedicated to the kitsch, and describes its etymology, history, and not least its general definition. The third part of this thesis interprets Erben's Kytice, continues with comparing the two different types of media, while is trying to describe the way of adapting literary writing in to the film and compares these two media, while is trying to find a notification of kitsch. The function of violence in films and its reception by journalists

Violence can be handled in a variety of ways across a wide variety of film genres and specific grasps of genres. The goal of this thesis is to explore the different functions of violence in films and then show how different is the acceptance of violence by Western film critics, ie journalists, in the same genre with similar motivations of the main characters, but with a slightly different approach of these characters to the use of violence. In the theoretical part I will describe the terms of review, criticism, film and at the same time the function of violence in films across genres. The practical part will then show how the concept of violence and its function may differ even within one larger genre, although the motivations of the main characters may sometimes be similar. Certain parallels as well as differences in the use and function of violence will be discussed on the example of selected scenes from two action film series Ip Man and Rambo. Subsequently, the reactions to the manifestations of violence by film critics will be analyzed and in the end it will be assessed whether the critics reacted to the processing of violence at all, how they reacted to it and what generally follows from the critics' approach to various possibilities on depicting violence. Czech films based on well-known criminal cases: from reality, newspaper news to feature film and film reviews. Murder in Polná - Case of Leopold Hilsner

The thesis, called Czech films based on well-known criminal cases: from reality, newspaper news to feature film and film reviews. Murder in Polná - Case of Leopold Hilsner, deals with a criminal case which took place at the break of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. A young girl, Anežka Hrůzová, was murdered in the Březina woods outside the town of Polná. At a time when anti-Semitic sentiments dominated the society, a Polná resident and a Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was accused as the perpetrator of the crime. He was later convicted of this crime, and another one of a similar nature, even though there was no relevant evidence or testimonies. The period news outlets played a significant role in spreading the anti-Semitic tendencies. This thesis describes the course of this real-life case and focuses on the methods the media used to inform about it. Director Viktor Polesný made a film on the issue, Zločin v Polné (Murder in Polná), which is analysed in the thesis, along with the reviews written about this film, including the reception by viewers. Reviewers' Approach to Film Adaptations of Three Novels of Michal Viewegh

The Master's thesis titled "Reviewers' Approach to Film Adaptations of Three Novels of Michal Viewegh" aims to illustrate the way Czech reviewers approach to film adaptations. Film often differs significantly from the book or copies it too faithfully, which may affect qualities of the work. Knowledge of the book may therefore alter the audience's perception and judgement of the film. If the film reviewer wants to present a full-fledged review to his reader, he should always consider all aspects of the film, which can be relevant for the viewer. On the basis of three film adaptations of Michal Viewegh's novels (Wonderful Years of Lousy Living, From Subway with Love, The Sightseers) and their film reviews, the work looks for the answer to the main question: how film reviewers judge adaptations? Do they know and take into consideration the book in their evaluation or do they judge the film as an autonomous work? The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the concept of film review, the definition of film art and the difference between film and literature, and the problematics of film adaptations. In the practical part there are analyzed nine reviews from different journalists from three national newspapers.

Developmental and Media-based Metamorphoses of Cinderella as a fairy tale story and as a protagonist of the story

Master thesis deals with changes of elements, that constitute a fairy tale of the Cinderella in different times, cultural and media contexts. Therefore, thesis analyzes and compares different literal and film renderings of the story based upon morfological composition of the fairy tale and motives and gender stereotypes present in it. Individual features of tales are then processed and divided on archetypal and changeable. Main character, the Cinderella , is also considered, and her common characteristic is documented within gender analysis for every version of the story. Thesis also deals with fairy tale in general, with its definition, characteristic and theory of origin. Fairy tale is then interpreted as a part of folklore creation and as a literary work.

Tennessee Williams: Night of the Iguana

The Bachelor's Thesis compares the short story and the play, both entitled Night of the Iguana and both written by Tennessee Williams. The Thesis also deals with the adaptation of the play to the form of a film production directed by American director John Huston. Although both the characters and the events of the short story differ from the play, both literal works share the themes and motives they deal with: loneliness, anxiety, non-freedom, contrast between chastity and obscenity, loss of faith in God, the desire for unity with another person and the belief in the power of spiritual contact between two people. The film Night of the Iguana is a successful adaptation, in which most of the changes to the original play are only formal. The film is more epic, the unity of time, place and space is broken, dialogues are truncated, while the characters are more profound. There is less of the symbolic and the philosophical questions in the movie, as well as there is not so much of Williams’s absurd sense of humour and the overall approach of the director is more realistic. However, the main theme, the story and the characters stay true to the original Williams’s play.

From Scribe to Ministerial Counsellor: The Involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the Cinematography of the Forties and Fifties

1 Abstract The thesis focuses on the involvement of Jiří Mařánek in the management of the Film Department of the Ministry of Information during the years 1945 - 1948. His ministe- rial engagement is related to the contemporary strengthening of the importance of literary preparation of the film and to the associated state dramaturgical supervision. Jiří Mařánek belongs to the circle of writers connected on one hand through their affiliation with the interwar avant-garde movements, on the other hand by their postwar involve- ment in the power apparatus that ended by the political and economic changes in the late forties and fifties. His professional fate speaks about the changes of cultural policy of the state, about the institutional development of the cinema and about the relations between literary and cinematic arts. It is a testimonial of what a successful professional career meant for a man of letters and what relationship it had to the cinema. We follow therefore a relatively brief but breakthrough episode of a writer and retired officer in the position of the Ministerial Counsellor, and we try to place its course and causes into a complex network of historical and social contexts and personal motivation.
