Grassroots political activism in Russia
Chervotkina, Yulia ; Svoboda, Karel (advisor) ; David, Maxine (referee)
Russian protests of 2011-2012 revitalised the country's political life. Hoping for a change, citizens were looking for opposition leaders to represent them in their dialogue with the authorities. However, the opposition failed to maintain its support and attract new followers over time, and this paper analyses why it happened. To answer the question, we analysed the long-term consequences of state-organised repression and institutionalisation. Our results showed that repression is not the only reason for the loss of support of the opposition. Limited radicalisation, premature institutionalisation, and disconnection of the opposition from civil society played a vital role in this process. Even though these were the main characteristics of the For Fair Elections movent, this research argues that the Russian opposition did not outgrow them ten years later. Keywords: Russia, protests, political opposition, repression, civil society
Stories of the New Testament as the key to education for coexistence and understanding in civil society.
LORKO, Radomíra
The thesis deals with the possibility of using the stories of the New Testament in value education in the family, regardless of whether its members are believers or not. The theoretical part sheds light on the important role of the family in value education. It views the family as a basic element of society, resp. as a fundamental community for education on basic values, the content of which is necessary for the building of civil society. Furthermore, the education of values is viewed from the point of view of the church through church documents and through the educational system of the Czech Republic. The practical part is experimental. It is divided into three parts. The first part is a set of structured meetings on topics such as freedom, courage, compassion, love of neighbor, tolerance and openness, including an introduction to the methods used. In the second part, both families are characterized. Both selected families do not profess any religion, have two children and two adults, agree with the proposed cooperation and belong to the middle class of the population. The third part of the experiment describes the application of the proposed programs and the result of the practice. Although the positive result of the experiment may be influenced by the fact that these are the families of the author's friends, it still has its weight precisely because all participants were not obliged to participate only in their sincerity resulting from trust in interpersonal friendships. A significant result of the work can be considered verification that the combination of different approaches to the text, from variant reading, listening to artistic expression, makes both attractive and seemingly uninteresting texts or topics that seem to stand outside of everyday life. The pupils of the second grade responded best to the program and, as they themselves expressed in the final discussions, appreciated the opportunity to express their opinions openly and in sufficient space and to express their creativity towards the given goal. Family members agreed that working in this experiment was fun, inspiring, and brought them new unexpected experiences.
The Role of the Civil Society in the Transformation of the North African States
Jiránková, Adéla ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Ditrych, Ondřej (referee) ; Kučera, Tomáš (referee)
The rigorous thesis focuses on the role of the Civil Society in the processes of transition to democracy as a part of the possible democratization wave in the Middle East also know as the Arab Spring. For the purposes of the thesis the author examines three case studies of countries with the successful revolutions - Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia and two countries, where the revolutions were not successful - Morocco and Algeria. Using the method of process-tracing with focus on the path-dependency it traces the changes in the dynamics of the Civil Society in the pre-revolutionary period, concretely during Mubarak's regime in Tunisia, Qaddafi's rule in Libya, Ben Ali's regime in Tunisia, reign of the king Muhammad VI. in Morocco, and Bouteflika's regime in Algeria through the revolutions to the post-revolutionary period. Moreover, the main assumption is that the initial non-democratic regimes have been significantly influencing the transformation process of all three countries and this also applies to the Civil Society as such. The Civil Society, in this thesis, is based on two paradigms. The first is based on the liberal modernization framework and the second is connected with stagnation and socio-economic deprivation. This unique combination contributed to the transformation of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco,...

The controversial nature of a social enterprise as a commercialized organization of the civil sector
Hořínková, Monika ; Frič, Pavol (advisor) ; Witz, Petr (referee)
The topic of this diploma thesis is the commercialization of civic organizations, which we understand as the process in which they take over some procedures, methods and strategies of the commercial sector in order to generate some profit. As the highest level of commercialization, this work considers the transformation of civil organization into a so called social enterprise. At the next potential level, this civic organization would become a pure market enterprise acting as socially responsible. Thus, a social enterprise is defined as a civic organization, for which profiting is just as important as an increase in public benefit by fulfilling of its own altruistic mission. However, it is said that this social mission may be threatened by the economic one. Whereas the social enterprise combines those two opposing attributes in the form of a social and economic mission, it is considered to be controversial. That's why the aim of this diploma thesis is to determine the importance of a transformation of civic organization into the social enterprise for its life and how this transformation affects its functioning and its essence. The diploma theses is based primarily on the theory of civil society, the civil sector, the social economy and the theory of social enterprise. It is a case study, which...
