War in Vietnam and the role of Television broadcasting in the United States of America
Ondrejková, Pavlína ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
In my thesis I focus and analyse how selected studies track the media's actions during the Vietnam War. I focus most closely on 1968 and the events of the Tet Offensive and examine how the media (mainly television) reflected these event. Through qualitative analysis, i also trace whether the selected studies support or refute the Pentagon's official statement that held the media responsible for America's failure in Vietnam. My analysis found that none of the selected studies support the official position that the media was responsible for the United States' loss in the Vietnam War, but all of the studies consider that the media played a very important role.
How communistic propaganda influenced Czechoslovakian radio's programs for kids between 1968 and 1974
Kaňka, Josef ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
Since the beginning of its more than a hundred-year history, Czech and Czechoslovak Radio has offered a number of programmes for child listeners. Whether it was fairy tales, educational and journalistic programmes or special formats not found in programmes for adults. Children themselves could often participate in the creation of the content. In the politically turbulent 20th century, during which radio experienced the beginnings of democracy, the Nazi occupation, the long socialist era under the control of the Soviet Union and the return to freedom, media content also changed depending on the social situation. From dramaturgy, to form, to content as a key factor. This is especially noticeable in the case of the totalitarian regimes. By excluding or, on the contrary, frequently repeating certain topics and treating them in a critical or servile manner, the representatives of the ruling establishment were able to control the dominant discourse and, with it, influence public opinion and suppress the critical voices. In addition to news and journalism, drama could also be used for this purpose. Using various media outlets, a fictional reality that may have little in common with the real situation can be created very effectively. The aim of this thesis is to search for, analyse and compare these...

The media image of comfort women in contemporary Japan
Roubalová, Natálie ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
This thesis focuses on comfort women and the stance of contemporary Japan towards this issue. The term refers to women and girls who were forced to serve as sex slaves to the Japanese Imperial Army between 1932 and 1945. The issue of comfort women still resonates in contemporary Japanese society today, and therefore the thesis focuses on the Japanese media, Japanese political events, and the education system. The focus relates to the constant change in stance of Japan's main political leaders, the lack of representation of the issue in the media, or the complete censorship of comfort women in the current history textbooks. The analytical part of this thesis consists of semi-structured interviews with Japanese students who describe the diversity of teaching in Japan and abroad. The interviews mainly focus on the teaching of Japanese crimes during World War II. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of processing historical sensitivities in the formation of collective memory through the example of comfort women and Japanese society.
The trial of Milada Horáková and Co. and its influence on the Czechoslovak media in 1950
Sladká, Julie ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The bachelor's thesis examines the trial of Milada Horáková and associates and its impact on Czechoslovak media in 1950. It explores the political background preceding the trial, the fate of Milada Horáková, and the media environment of the time. The practical part includes research from both contemporary and historical media. Specifically, it utilizes qualitative content analysis of Rudé právo and Nová svoboda from mid-May to mid-June. The goal was to identify main themes, narratives, and propagandistic elements in the headlines, subheadlines, and subtexts of both newspapers. The research revealed how the figures of the trial were presented and how the media approaches of the two newspapers differed. The findings provide deeper insights into media manipulation under the totalitarian regime and the methods used. Additionally, the practical part includes an analysis of Martin Vadas's documentary series "Process H" and an examination of mentions of the series in Czech online media. The result is a summary of the documentary series, detailing the types of approaches and perspectives it utilizes, and providing a broader context of how the trial was staged and the propaganda techniques employed by the media. The intention of both studies is to contribute comprehensive knowledge about how the...
Depiction of events in Czech history through the communist propaganda
Lehetová, Lucie ; Groman, Martin (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The thesis focuses on the depiction of events in Czech history and how they were portrayed by communist propaganda in the 1950s and 1970s in selected Czechoslovak media. The theoretical part focuses on the basic concepts related to propaganda, and the specifics of communist propaganda in Czechoslovakia are examined, including the cult of personality, classes and class struggle. Czechoslovak media - daily press, radio, television, film - are analyzed, and teaching is also included. Based on defined parameters, seven relevant historical events are selected and described in detail. The practical part is an assessment of the development of propaganda of the selected events in the 1950s and 1970s. The findings suggest that propaganda strategies have changed over time, but certain elements remain constant. The results show that in the 1950s the emphasis was on fear and reinforcing the party's will, while in the 1970s propaganda efforts became routine. The discussion then opens up the possibility of further exploration of the issues, including the inclusion of radio and television, as well as comparisons of other relevant periods.

Journalistic autonomy as a part of the professional identity of journalists
Kloučková, Andrea ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
The master's thesis deals with journalistic autonomy as one of the principles of free press and as a key component of the professional identity of journalists. On an ideological level, the journalistic autonomy should ensure the free publication of information without political, economic, owner or any other kind of pressure. The main goal of the thesis is to verify how journalists themselves perceive their autonomy. In addition to developing basic theoretical concepts, the work builds on already implemented Czech and international empirical studies investigating journalistic autonomy. At the same time, it relies on some statements of media experts who criticize the current state of journalism and talk about the gradual weakening of journalistic autonomy in liberal-democratic systems, which results in fragmentation of the journalistic field, the profession declain and the growth of distrust in democratic media. The thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with journalists working at the Economia publishing house showed how they currently perceive their professional autonomy and what factors most influence them in the performance of their profession. The interviews revealed that it is not so much about visible political influences or obvious pressures from the owner or external organizations....
