Jana Cermanová Prague sculpture exhibitions 1898 - 1916 A contribution to the theme of gallery sculpture presentation Dissertation synopsis Sculpture as an artistic discipline experienced a dynamic rise in the Czech lands at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This followed the much admired example of France, where Charles Morice, referencing Rodin and his pupils, asserted the dominance of modern sculpture over painting in 1910. Thanks in large part to major art world figure and educator J. V. Myslbek, the Czech lands also saw the development of a highly ambitious group of sculptors poised to address a growing social demand for monumental works (particularly memorials) that recaptured the city's public space. Sculptors worked on architectural commissions for decorative sculptures and on orders for funerary objects, which guaranteed them an income and enabled them to pursue their own creative work. However, it was chiefly this "flood of monuments" that attracted public attention to sculptors and garnered them social prestige. Sculptors became more deeply involved in art events and played a major role in addressing contemporary art world issues. The public boom enjoyed by sculpture carried over into exhibition halls, where ...

Resume The thesis deals with the Estates Theatre in Prague and its social context from 1798 to 1888. We can find the interaction (between theatre and society) in the theatre program obviously. Therefore, the research was primarily focused on analysis of the repertoire. These probes can help to understand the mentality of the viewer and its change during watched time. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to work with the relevant theoretical concepts explaining the creation of interaction between stage and auditorium. This background was found in the field of sociology and cultural studies. The thesis is divided into four chapters. They are concerned to the specifying of influence on the program formation at first. A crucial role in this process was played by the directors who rented the theatre. Hence, the essential parts of work are concerned with the personalities of single directors (with their praxis, strategies etc.). Furthermore, other important parts of the thesis are repertoire analyzes of single periods. These sections highlight the various genres and their relationship to the society. In the first half of the 19th century, we meet with the cardinal phenomenon - a tragedy and comedy of middle-class (bourgeoisie) environment. These features involved the important elements illustrating the...

TITLE: Propaganda campaigns in Czechoslovakia 1948-1953 AUTHOR: Pavlína Kourová DEPARTMENT: History & History Didactics Department SUPERVISOR: Prof. PhDr. Jiří Pokorný, CSc. ABSTRACT: This dissertation concerns propaganda campaigns conducted by the communist regime in Czechoslovakia during the years 1948- 1953. The main objective is to describe, on the basis of archive research, how these campaigns proceeded, how and by whom they were organised, in which way party organs, state institutions and the media were involved and how the general public was engaged in these campaigns. Since a large number of propaganda campaigns were mounted in the selected period, all attention in this dissertation is focussed on six divergent campaigns, which together provide a representative picture with regard to the chosen theme. It concerns the campaigns that accompanied the 70th birthday celebrations of J. V. Stalin, the trial of the former politician Milada Horáková et al., the battle against the "American beetle" (potato beetle), the "Lánská akce" (a mass recruitment drive for young people to work in the mining industry), the attempt to introduce a "děda Mráz" ("Father Frost") tradition to replace traditional Christmas celebrations and the trial of former general secretary Rudolf Slánský et al. All these campaigns were...
