Naomi Kawase: Contacts
Ludvíková, Hana ; Bendová, Helena (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
In my bachelor thesis I tried to make the interpretation of thema and style of films of japanese authoress Naomi Kawase. I have chosen three films which I find the most significant for the authoress: The Snail (Katatsumori), Embracing and A letter from a yellow sherry blossom. By making the detailed analysis of particular films I tried to find out, what makes her films so specific. She makes the relationship between the subject equal ? it points on the fact, that the relationship between her and the object is essential and it determines the process of shooting. The authoress communicates with the viewer in a special way by using the fragmental naration? she gives big freedom of interpretation to the viewer: she makes him to fill the connections by himself, she communicates with him on the intuitive base. According to this, she can connect her personal theme with wider connections (for example with the thoughts about the family generally). Last but not least, Naomi Kawase reflects the film medium itself.

Paris, I Love You

JINDŘICHOVÁ, M.: Paris, je t'aime. Thematic study. Bachelor's thesis. Academy of performing arts in Praque. Film and TV school. Audiovisual studies. Supervisor Mgr. Helena Bendová. Key words: Paris, je t'aime, omnibus feature, representaion of city in motion pictures, authorial style, french cinematography, thematic study My bachelor's thesis deals with a thematic analysis of a omnibus feature called "Paris, Je T'aime". The basic concept of this movie is that in every short story there should appear some love theme (in any form). The text contains an interpretation of partial fragments (both content and formal) as well as interpretation of the whole film itself. I am comparing different ways of how directors are dealing with the main motive in the same way as transitions between each narratives are resolved. Each story takes place in one of the Parisian quarters, Arrondissements as they are called, and - with regards to the main concept ? handles love in it's own way. Each director coped with the short footage of six minutes differently. Some stories are brilliant, same failures. In the end the whole movie looks like an incoherent anthology of unrelated pieces. This film misses an authorial overview which would offer some meaning to these fragments and would create a compact piece.
Cult Film
Podzimek, Matěj ; Bendová, Helena (advisor) ; Vajchr, Marek (referee)
The goal of the following thesis is to explore the phenomenon of "cult film" and to trace down the hitorical development, semantics, social and historical context of the commonly used expression. It focuses on the close connection between the expression and the historical development of the American cinema and proves that the impact of this cinema (regarding mostly commercial aspects) on the expression has been more significant than usually admitted by film critics. It also considers a viewer as an important factor in the process of creating Hollywood flicks. Lastly, it focuses on the current devaluation of the expression "cult film". Finding the accurate terminology is the only way of improving the situation, which is another goal of the thesis. It also helps readers realizing this fact and to use the expression properly.
