Ani tady, ani tam

Asian Inspirations in the Works of Jiří Frejka over Time
Burešová, Denisa ; Pšenička, Martin (advisor) ; Just, Vladimír (referee)
Traditional Asian theatre genres have fascinated western audiences since the end of the 19th century. In my thesis, I focused on the means by which Jiří Frejka, a leading representative of Czech avant- garde theatre, dealt with that trend. Through Japanese, Chinese and Indian texts, he verifies new possibilities of all elements of theatre production - the stage, music and, primarily, the actor and his voice and movement. Thanks to prompt books, photographs, reviews and other materials from Frejka's estate stored in the National Museum, the archive of the National Theatre and the Moravian Museum in Brno, I assess these individual elements of theatre production in connection with traditional Asian genres and I seek mutual parallels, sources of inspiration and, primarily, the manner in which Frejka adapted them to his own directorial work. The objective of this work is to confirm the previous thesis that, in the case of Jiří Frejka, deeper study of the topic led to a fundamental shift in the manner of bringing these "foreign" sources of inspiration into the Czech environment, which moved away from a merely decorative function toward an internally linked and well-founded method. Key words Czech theatre avant-garde, Asagao, Modern Studio, Lady Precious Stream, Shakuntala, The Post Office

Evaluation of the Qualitative Benefits of the Development Project co-financed by the EU
Pšenička, Martin ; Novák, Michal (referee) ; Kocmanová, Alena (advisor)
The first part of my work focuses on the theoretical description of EU regional policy, its evolution and the description and the objectives of the different programming periods. In this part of the work is also described which EU funds are being used for co-financing of different goals. Furthermore I define all operational programs which can be used to draw funds to provide grants. These information are necessarry to choose the right operational program to use. For the particular project co-financed from the European Union, I present an economic analysis of the project and a questionnaire survey which I use to do a qualitative assessment of the project and its help for the development of the region.
What is the Theatre
Neznal, Vít ; ETLÍK, Jaroslav (advisor) ; PŠENIČKA, Martin (referee)
Vít Neznal’s PhD thesis begins by defining theatre as a specific sphere of media. According to the author, such notion is made possible by following up to the tradition of Czech theatre theory (immediacy as a specific feature of the medium, a synthetic basis, a non-substantial conception of a work, acting as a decisive art, a total three-dimensional feedback-based communication with cardinal impact on the specific nature of stage acting, and an active position of the spectator). On this basis, Neznal proceeds to explain why there is no justifiable reason for theatre theory to abolish the dichotomy between art and reality. His premise is that while theatre is rooted in life, it is at the same time automatically and irreversibly taken out of it as a medium. As a result, there is, from the point of view of theatre theory, a difference between an intensified “life” entering the stage and becoming the basis of expression (intensification of “life” is the basis of means of expression and is therefore made intentional) and between its integration with other pillars forming the constitutive basis of a theatre act as such on the actual level of media (the artificial pervaded by “life”).
Jindřich Hořejší as a Translator of French Drama
Zahálka, Michal ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
The thesis' subject is the celebrated poet Jindřich Hořejší (1886-1941) in his lesser-known vocation as a theatre translator whose bulk of work consists of translation of contemporary French drama (eg. Giraudoux, Claudel, Cocteau, Salacrou, Neveux, Passeur, Achard or Pagnol). First, it follows traces of theatre in the poet's life, before discussing various aspects of his role as a translator in the reality of theatre at the time (fnancial conditions of theatre translation, the work of theatre agencies, communication with theatres etc.) and offering a list of his translations of French drama, compiled to be as complete as possible. The next chapter contains analyses of Hořejší's own articles detailing his views on the theoretical aspects of translation (which are also reprinted in the Appendix), putting them into the context of contemporary translation theory and practice. The fnal two chapters analyse selected translations. The frst deals with verse drama translations, Arnoux' Huon of Bordeaux and Racine's Phaedra; the latter with an extensive commentary on the history of Czech stage alexandrine. The next chapter follows Hořejší's work with colloquial language in Pagnol's Fanny and compares his approach to translation of Giraudoux' Intermezzo with that of Karel Kraus.

Based on the preserved archive materials for this production, whose main authors were Ladislav Rychman, Jiří Procházka and Jaromír Staněk, I will also attempt to name the basic principles, benefits and limits of Laterna magika.
