The Translation of the Passive Voice in Simultaneous Interpreting Using Czech-German Material
Koutská, Anna ; Mračková Vavroušová, Petra (advisor) ; Kloudová, Věra (referee)
The Translation of the Passive Voice in Simultaneous Interpreting Using Czech-German Material Abstract This thesis examines the transfer of passive diathesis from German to Czech in the process of simultaneous interpreting. The aim of the research in the empirical section of my thesis is to describe the main tendencies within the language transfer of the passive diathesis. The analysis is based on the records and transcripts of the European Parliament Plenary sessions. The analysis of the speeches focuses on three aspects 1) preserving or changing of the diathesis 2) expression of the agent 3) interference. The initial passive diathesis is mostly preserved. The target speech in Czech language contains more passive diathesis than common written or spoken Czech. If the agent in the original speech is expressed, in most cases it is preserved in the target speech. In case when the agent in the original speech is not stated and it is expressed only implicitly, in the target speech it is expressed directly. The occurrence of interference can be stated thanks to the overall high level of passive diathesis in the target speech compared with common written or spoken Czech. Most of the choices made by interpreters are examples of a positive language transfer.

Hamáková, Tereza ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kloudová, Věra (referee)
(in English) The presented master's thesis deals with the subject of terminology management and includes a case study carried out in collaboration with the professional association Jednota tlumočníků a překladatelů (Union of Interpreters and Translators, JTP). In the first part, the theoretical principles of terminology in general are described and the basic aspects of terminology management with the focus on terminological databases are presented. The reader is also briefly familiarized with terminology work at the EU level and some selected projects. The first part shall serve as the basis for the second part, which is of empirical nature and reflects findings discovered during the development of a database using the SDL MultiTerm 2015 software and glossaries provided by the JTP. In this part, the diploma candidate describes each step taken during the development and provides commentary on specific issues and their solutions. Finally, the experiences gained through the project are confronted with the theory and future prospects are outlined.
Interpreting Between German Colonists and Local Residents of Namibia During the German Colonisation
Getta, Jelizaveta ; Kloudová, Věra (advisor) ; Mračková Vavroušová, Petra (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the issue of interpreting in Namibia both during its existence as a German colony and its post-colonial era. In 1884 the territory of present-day Namibia became a colony called German South West Africa. Among the problems encountered by the colonizers were the linguistic and cultural differences that made communication between the Germans and the locals complicated and, at times, even impossible. Due to their ambivalent role, interpreters were treated with a lot of mistrust and the clients suspected them of twisting the intended information in favour of one of the parties. Although the Colonial Administration emphasised language training for both negotiating parties, at the end, this approach turned out to be too ambitious, and it proved necessary to use interpreting services, especially in the areas of law, religion and diplomacy. This paper explores the role, status, working conditions and competences of interpreters in these areas. Many of the findings are partly intertwined with modern interpretation theory and practice, making it possible to apply some of the crucial theoretic claims on Namibia's colonial era. The work also creates a broader context encompassing translation issues as well as the development of interpreting services after the collapse of the...

The Rate of Translations Errors in Czech Legal Texts Published in the Official Journal of the European Union
Tomíčková, Kateřina ; Svoboda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kloudová, Věra (referee)
This thesis investigates the rate of translation errors in Czech legal texts published in the Official Journal of the European Union using automated quality assurance tools. In the theoretical part, the aim of the thesis-to determine the error rate of analyzed text-is set, and individual hypotheses are defined. Subsequently, individual reasons which make translation for the EU institutions specific and why it is a separate subcategory within legal translation are listed. The method used to achieve the set objective and to confirm or disprove proposed hypotheses is described as well as the corpus which has been created for the analysis is presented. The corpus is comprised of legally binding texts- regulations, directives, and decisions published in the Official Journal of the European Union between 2004 and 2018. In the theoretical part, a definition of an error established for the purpose of this thesis is also provided. The definition was created based on QA tools options and a comparative analysis of different metrics used to evaluate the error rate in translation. The empirical part focuses on the research itself and discuss various issues encountered. The results of the analysis-whether the hypotheses have been proven-are then presented, and future research is outlined.
