Religion and Society in the Quran and Their Relationship to Pre-Islamic Arabia
Oudová Holcátová, Barbara ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Ťupek, Pavel (referee)
My goal in this thesis is to concentrate on the origins of Islam as we can understand it from the Quran itself, without using other, later sources. At the same time, I am interested in the relationship between pre-Islamic Arabia and early Islam. My method will be based primarily on Mary Douglas and her grid- group analysis. This British anthropologist attempted to analyse different social situations, in which various systems of understanding the world are formulated, using the parameters of "group" (the degree to which the borders of a group are defined) and "grid" (the number of rules by which an individual is controlled). These two parameters then made it possible for her to classify different cosmologies according to their ideas and their social reality. Applying this method, I will attempt to extract from the Quran - not primarily a narrative text - a description of the change of early Muslims' social situation and development of their religious ideas which is connected to it, and I will attempt to use Mary Douglas' anthropology to explain how such a transformation happened and could happen. JALAL AD-DIN MENGUBERDI AND MONGOLS Jalal ad-Din was a hero of his time. He was a hero, an adventurer, a knight and fighter. His role in Middle East politcs but remains very complicated. In my essay I'm working with few of medieval chronicles of different muslim writers od 13th century. My deal is to point out a complex picture of this important person and explain his contribution to umma and medieval society. If there was any. I'm asking how was he seen by muslim intelectualls and by a society? Was he a savior or a threat? Was he really "the wall against Mongol invasion"? He was indeed a really complex person and I want to find his real face among different opinions. I divided my essay into five champers. First of them is describing first year of Jalal ad-Din rule in Khwarezm, which was short and full of fights. Second chapter is describing evolution of relations between Mongols and khwarezmshah during twelve years of his rule. Sklenařík, Jakub ; Kropáček, Luboš (advisor) ; Ťupek, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is focused on Imam Ja'far al-Ṣadiq as the leading figure of Shiite jurisprudence. The first chapter deals with late general history of the Umayyad Caliphate, because the Imam lived under it's conditions. Next, the thesis is concerned with the Shiite movement of this period and with some extreme thoughts as well. Then it continues on to study the early legal thought of Islam. The second chapter presents available information about Ja'far's life. The main part of this thesis adresses his thoughts on various subjects across different sciences. Some of these thoughts which are still alive, mostly those which deal with Shia beliefs. The result of this thesis is an evaluation whether Ja'far can be truly regarded as a founder of Shiite jurisprudence or not and the answer will depend on individual point of view. In the end it is not that important whether we describe him as a founder, as an organizer or as a key figure, because the answer will still be positive.
The Developments of the Rentier State Model in Saudi Arabia
Tomaštík, Karel ; Gombár, Eduard (advisor) ; Ťupek, Pavel (referee)
Saudi Arabia, along with other Gulf oil monarchies, represents an original politico- economic system. Huge revenues in the form of oil rent, flowing to the Treasury since the oil boom in the early 70's, have fundamentally changed the socio-economic structure, which was in literature termed the rentier state. The origin, development and description of typical characteristics of rentier state are the main topic of this thesis. The first section discusses the theoretical foundations and approaches to the issue. The second chapter provides a historical background in order to position the study in the context of previous political, economic and ideological development. In an analysis of the formation of state structures, the work deals with the relationships between members of the ruling house of Saud, between the government and social elites, with functioning of clientelist structures and interactions within the bureaucratic apparatus. Based on the study of these relationships the thesis marks out particularities of the Saudi politico-economic system that distinguish it from the classical concept of rentier state model. The main distinctive feature is the diminished autonomous ability of state to regulate the functioning of state institutions and to encourage individual agencies to cooperate actively...
Salafi Islam: its ideological sources and interpretations
Ťupek, Pavel ; Kropáček, Luboš (advisor) ; Veselý, Rudolf (referee) ; Ostřanský, Bronislav (referee)
In my dissertation entit1ed "Salafi Islam: lts Ideological Sources and Interpretations" I deal with Salafi Islam in the broader context of Sunni orthodoxy. I trace ideological roots of Salafi Islam to medieval Hanbalism with main stress put on Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya. I deal mainly with two important aspects of his teaching which inf1uenced later development of Salafi thought: Salafi dogma and the question of ziyara. I explain Ibn Taymiyya's position in theology and law in the light of his conception of tawhid. Another crucial thinker of Salafi Islam is Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. His simplified interpretation of Ibn Taymiyya, as well as his radical socio-religious conceptions strongly inf1uenced and radicalized significant part of Salafi thought. As regards contemporary Salafism, I deal with its different interpretations and inner currents. Stress is put on the crucial question ofDogma and Method in Salafi discourse.
