Time-scale analysis of sovereign bonds market co-movement in the EU
Šmolík, Filip ; Vácha, Lukáš (advisor) ; Krištoufek, Ladislav (referee)
The thesis analyses co-movement of 10Y sovereign bond yields of 11 EU mem- bers (Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark) divided into the three groups (the Core of the Eurozone, the Periphery of the Eurozone, the states outside the Eurozone). In the center of attention are changes of co-movement in the crisis period, especially near the two significant dates - the fall of Lehman Brothers (15.9.2008) and the day, when increase of Greek public deficit was announced (20.10.2009). Main contribution of the thesis is usage of alternative methodol- ogy - wavelet transformation. It allows to research how co-movement changes across scales (frequencies) and through time. Wavelet coherence is used as well as wavelet bivariate and multiple correlation. The thesis brings three main findings: (1) co-movement significantly decreased in the crisis period, but the results differ in the groups, (2) co-movement significantly differs across scales, but its heterogeneity decreased in the crisis period, (3) near to the examined dates sharp and significant decrease of wavelet correlation was observable across lower scales in some states. Sentence imtation and working memory
Abrahámová, Miroslava ; Smolík, Filip (advisor) ; Morávková Krejčová, Lenka (referee)
Previous studies have suggested that short-term and long-term memory processes in- dependently affect performance in the sentence-imitation task. The multi-component working memory model by Baddeley and Hitch offers a suitable theoretical description of how these processes contribute to this performance. In order to examine the influence of language knowledge located in the long-term me- mory on performance in the sentence-imitation task while statistically controlling for the influence of short-term memory, we assigned to our participants different tasks testing their language knowledge, phonological short-term memory (phonological loop), com- plex short-term memory (central executive) and the sentence-repetition task. Results from hierarchical linear regression yield significant contribution of the tasks testing language knowledge to explaining the variance in the sentence-imitation task, while controlling for the contributions from the phonological and complex short-term memory tasks. These results are in accordance with previous research and the theory of multi-component working memory. Keywords: working memory, episodic buffer, sentence imitation
Interpreting and its influence on the quality of sign language interpreters' operative memory
Vaněčková, Lenka ; Hynková Dingová, Naďa (advisor) ; Smolík, Filip (referee)
The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on interpreting with regard to simultaneous interpreting and sign language interpreting with all of its specifics. Furthermore, it deals with memory as such, as well as with working memory, which is consequently correlated with sign language users, with the process of simultaneous interpreting and with sign language interpreting. The empirical part is based on a qualitative research - testing of working memory among a group of sign language interpreters, spoken language interpreters and non- interpreters through Reading Span Task and Corsi's test. The results form the basis for a hypothesis necessary for the ensuing quantitative exploration: interpreting has a positive influence on the quality of working memory among sign language interpreters.
Effects of Word Imageability on the Acquisition of Grammatical Morphology in Czech Children
Kříž, Adam ; Smolík, Filip (advisor) ; Chromý, Jan (referee)
(in English): In many studies there was demonstrated that word's imageability - the ability of a word to produce a mental image of it's referent - affects the processing of its inflection (e.g. Prado - Ullman, 2009), its acquisition (e.g. McDonough et al., 2011) and the acquisition of grammatical morphemes (Smolík, in press). This thesis builds on the Smolík's paper, and its goal is to test whether the imageability of a word's stem influences the acquisition of its inflections in Czech children. Word imageability ratings and ratings of other variables that were assumed to affect the process of the acquisition of word inflections, were collected, then questionnaires were distributed to parents to examine how the forms of chosen words are acquired by children. The focus was on the acquisition of nominative plural of nouns, present tense in second person and past tense of verbs. The results show that the imageability significantly predicts the age of acquisition of the nominative in singular and all observed forms of verbs. The absence of the imegability effect on the acquisition of nominative in plural may be due to the overall high imageability and thus reduced variability of ratings in nouns in our dataset. Two possible explanations of the imageability effect on the acqusition of morphological...
Possible ratings for photographs
Kubát, Petr ; Lukavský, Jiří (advisor) ; Smolík, Filip (referee)
This thesis addresses the question of the perception of photographs. It is based on the work of R. Greene and A. Oliva (2008) and further expands it. These authors investigated which global properties people identify on photographs of natural scenes and how consistent their evaluation of these properties is. In this paper I used general photographs without any thematic limitations. In the first part of the research I examined what global properties people determine during a quick viewing of a general photograph. The obtained general properties (movement limitation and fun) were added to the properties found in R. Greene's and A. Oliva's work. In the second part of the research I used a computer program for hierarchical grouping to determine how consistent the rating of these global properties is when different people rate the photographs. The resulting consistency is expressed as the average of all interobserver correlations for a given property. The experiment revealed that the transience property has the highest consistency rate (r=0,516), followed by movement in the scene (r=0,457) and openness (r=0,450). Fun (r=0,283) and navigability (r=0,245) exhibit the lowest rate of consistency. Lower concordance observed with general photographs is in my opinion caused by the higher complexity of the...
Virtual Gold Farming
Šmolík, Filip ; Skuhrovec, Jiří (advisor) ; Ivanková, Kristýna (referee)
At the end of 20th century new branch of computer games was developed - MMORPGs (Massive Multi Player Online Role Playing Games). This thesis deals with new phenomenon connected with them - RMT(Real Money Trade), which consists of selling virtual (in-game) currencies for real currencies (mainly US dollar nad euro). Demand side of this business is constituted by players of MMORPGs, supply side consists of so-called gold farmers. Thesis itself is focused on key variable of RMT - exchange rate between real a virtual currency. With help of theoretical model it is demonstrated that the exchange rate affects player's decisions related with RMT. Then it is shown, which variables have impact on exchange rate itself and there is described one of the possible sources of disturbances - operator of MMORPG. Operator's updating policy is analyzed and in empirical part some updates are chosen and it is demonstrated that they affect exchange rate in accordance with previous established theory.
Specific symptoms of the specific language impairment
Vávrů, Petra ; Smolík, Filip (advisor) ; Morávková Krejčová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis reports on specific language impairment (SLI). First part of the thesis summarizes first the current theoretical knowledge about this issue. It reviews terminology, classification, etiology, symptoms, diagnostic, therapy and association SLI with developmental dyslexia. The thesis then refers about search for diagnostic markers of SLI in pre-school age. The empirical part of the thesis summarizes the research conducted. Three groups of children were compared- 19 children with SLI, 19 peers without SLI (AC) and 19 younger language- matched children (LC). Four diagnostic methods were used - picture vocabulary test, number recall, sentence repetition and non-word recall. In all tests children with SLI performed poorly than AC-group and in some of them also poorly than LC-group. Limitation in sentence repetition and non-word recall, omission of prepositions and clitics and also omission of verbs or using of incomplete infinitive forms in sentences were detected as possible relevant diagnostic markers.
Computational model of continuous speech segmentation process in Czech language
Stehlík, Luděk ; Smolík, Filip (referee) ; Bahbouh, Radvan (referee)
The work discusses questions about the nature of the human mind, the process of language acquisition and the cognitive development in general and presents results of computational modelling of one of the seminal developmentally-psycholinguistic phenomena - segmentation of continuous speech flow on the basis of phonotactic and prosodic cues. In the general part of the work there is at first briefly introduced the philosophical topic of mind-body problem and then there is described intellectual, historical and cognitivelyanthropological background of the computational-representational paradigm which is in the contemporary cognitive science the most prevailing view of the human mind treating the mental life as a kind of computation in the sense of manipulation and transformation of syntactic structures. There are in detail introduced two competing interpretations of this statement in the form of physical symbol system hypothesis and connectionism which differ primarily about the opinion on how far from the level of ordinary thought and concepts we should look for the formal rules specifying mental computation. There are also mentioned two alternative theories in the form of dynamic (or embodied) cognitive science and theory of distributed cognition according to which the nature of intelligence doesn't lie...
