Justin Steinfeld in Prague Exile
Pfannová, Daniela ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
This paper deals with the journalistic work and the single novel of Justin Steinfeld (1886 Kiel - 1970 Baldock), who fled in 1933 from Hamburg to Czechoslovakia. This work focuses on his articles, which he wrote during his Prague exile (1933-1939) for the German speaking magazine Die Wahrheit and on his only novel Ein Mann liest Zeitung (1984, 2020) which tells the story of an exile who, like Steinfeld fled from Hamburg to Prague from the Nazis. The first part of the thesis introduces Czechoslovakia as an exile country for refugees from Germany in the 1930s and cultural activities of the exiles are shortly commented on, especially in relation to leftist and anti-fascist circles. This is followed by a short portrait of Justin Steinfeld. The main part of this work consists of chapters about the work of Steinfeld. First, his articles for Die Wahrheit are analysed. The attempt is made to characterize his journalistic writing, to find and describe the thematic focuses of his articles. The next chapter is devoted to the novel Ein Mann liest Zeitung and describes how the subject of exile is presented in it. The concept of exile is understood in different ways - firstly as a (geographical and social) space, secondly as a social status and thirdly as a psychological status. Finally, the magazine articles...
Hacks/Müller: The drama of the GDR in relation to the literary traditions and socialist presence
Šemberová, Daria Magdalena ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
(anglicky) This dissertation joins a conversation in German literary studies about East German literature's role, identity, and characteristic features. The thesis discusses the phenomenon of autonomy of the dramatic compositions written by Peter Hacks and Heiner Müller in the 1960s and 1970s in the GDR. The theoretic background of the research consists, among other things, of a short introduction to theoretical concepts developed by Kenneth Burke (particularly his New Rhetoric approach presented in The philosophy of literary form), Raymond Williams (including his cultural materialism), as well as Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno (Critical Theory). Furthermore, the dissertation deals with the idea of metatheatre, and it discusses elements of metadrama (Karin Vieweg-Marks) in the selected plays. The symbolic boundaries of research are the Berlin Wall's construction in 1961 and the expulsion of the German poet and songwriter Wolf Biermann in 1976. By analyzing the authors' concrete strategies, the thesis demonstrates that their plays articulate both the European literary tradition and the (East) German socialist project.
Male oscuro - Ingeborg Bachmann's Aufzeichnungen aus der Zeit der Krankheit and their relations to her literary work
Szűcsová, Alica ; Schneider, Thomas (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
This thesis analyses Ingeborg Bachmann's posthumously published texts in the volume Male oscuro. Aufzeichnungen aus der Zeit der Krankheit and their relations to her literary work. Two central themes are elaborated through the analysis of the volume: illness and writing. The focus is on Bachmann's conception of writing and the issues arising from it. A comparison between Male oscuro and the author's work, the short story Undine geht and two poems Keine Delikatessen and Böhmen liegt am Meer, shows analogies on several different levels. The concept of utopia indicates continuity in Bachmann's work and the existential condition for her writing in relation to the metaphor of 'desert'. Key words: Ingeborg Bachmann, Male oscuro, illness, writing, metaphoric, contrariness, comparison, utopia

Petrbok, Václav ; Smyčka, Václav ; Turek, Matouš ; Nekula, M. ; Heimböckel, D. ; Weinberg, M. ; Budňák, Jan ; Futtera, Ladislav ; Horňáček, L. ; Hon, J. K.
A publication How to write a transcultural literary history? contains selected contributions from the international conference held on 15th - 16th November 2018 by the Group for Research on Czech-German Intercultural Relations in the Bohemian Lands in the Institute of Czech Literature of the ASCR. The conference focused on the theoretical and methodological issues of writing the history of several literary cultures in different languages that coexisted in the Bohemian lands. It includes contributions concerning medieval literary production, the exposed “long” 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, as well as a number of problem areas (translation, cultural transfer, periodization, multilingualism, canon, regionalism, confessionalism) and theoretical and methodological approaches (postcolonial studies, transcultural theory, new historicism). In addition to the scholarly intent, this collection also seeks to stimulate further debates on the form of future literary-historical synthesis of literatures of Bohemian Lands across disciplines - Czech studies, German studies and other philologies, as well as cultural science or social and political history.
Transfer/Expulsion in the czech and german memory Cultures
Smyčka, Václav ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Urválek, Aleš (referee) ; Schneider, Thomas (referee)
The thesis analyzes how the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia is treated, interpreted and staged. It concentrates on two questions: what strategies do the authors use to recover the memory of the events and how do the different communities translate and share their memories? In the first part I sketch the development of the political contexts and discourses of expulsion in German and Czech memory culture on the basis of the model of ‚floating gap' by Jan Assman. In the second part, I present seven ‚strategies of commemoration' (Documenting, Interpreting, Investigating, Exhibiting of fragmentarized Memories, Swearing/staging of Trauma, Drawing of Genealogies, Reading in Landscapes), which the authors use in Literature (and Art) to represent the expulsion. The third part focuses finally on the problem of intercultural translation of memories, its shareability and the inner dialogism. The constant line of the analysis is the irreductibility of connection of memory and forgetting, which underline each other from the level of text to the level of memory politic.
The Trauma of the Shoah in Texts by Jewish Authors of the Second and Third Generation - A Comparison
Baláková, Anna ; Schneider, Thomas (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
This thesis is about the trauma of the Shoah and the attempts of its literary processing by three generations of Jewish authors. The work focuses on the processes of transmission of the trauma from the generation of the Shoah victims to the subsequent generations and elaborates similarities and differences of the respective coping attempts. Ruth Klüger's weiter leben and Art Spiegelman's Mouse are examples for first and second generation. The third generation, which is a main subject of this thesis, is depicted in Channah Trzebiner's text Die Enkelin. Subsequently, based on several scientific studies on the subject, a detailed textual analysis of a tradition of traumatic experiences is presented. These traumatic experiences still have influence on the descendants and thus on the construction of a current Jewish identity.
Between Critique and Inner Emigration: Ernst Wiechert in the Third Reich
Bolková, Barbora ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
Based on a narrative structure and historical context of literary works and other articles of the author, this thesis is supposed to answer a question how Ernst Wiechert's work reflects his personal and authorship development and above all his attitude to the Nazism regime. It shows in which points his early production is similar to ideologeme of German national socialism and how the author distances from them later. The thesis describes the character of his regime critics in political and moral polarity as well as the reason for the author's inside transformation from critics to Inner Emigration.
The Biblical Job and his reception in the German-speaking literature
Bendová, Adéla ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
This master thesis presents the character of Job and his reception in German-speaking literature on the basis of three works of the twentieth century, written by Joseph Roth, Oskar Kokoschka and Günter Kunert. The starting point for the literary reception is the biblical Old Testament book Job, whose story, form and circumstances of origin are mentioned in the first part of the work. Following are the performances of individual authors and the interpretation of their works. The core of the work is a comparison of literary reception of the figure of Job in the texts with a biblical original. The subject of the study was, in particular, the question of how the selected authors deal with the biblical substance, how they use Job for their works and which meaning have the comic elements in their texts.

The Snake as Means of Reflection in the Texts about Artists from the German Romantic Period
Balcarová, Markéta ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Bartl, Andrea (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis examines the function and performance of the motive of a snake in four selected texts about artists of the German romantic period and perceives the snake as an attribute reflecting the problems of the artistic existence and a way to the artistic work, possibly of the artistic work at all. When interpreting the single motives of the snake, three-phase procedure as applied by Erwin Panofsky in description of the motives in the pictures has been chosen by analogy for literary texts. The interpretation is based on the structural position of the motive of the snake in the text and its performance in the text. Subsequently, the principal role is revelation of contexts which updates the given motive of the snake - in particular they are biblical snakes, mythical snakes and a serpentine line as a line of beauty which was the subject of the period aesthetic discourse. The meaning of the motive of the snake in the texts is given primarily by the mutual interaction of theme contexts which is in the single texts realized by various ways. The motive of the snake as formed in the single interpreted texts is a highly complex motive in all the cases. Thanks to the possibility of connotation with the snakes from the sphere of the Bible and mythology the literary motive of the snake becomes a...
