The submitted doctoral thesis examines the function and performance of the motive of a snake in four selected texts about artists of the German romantic period and perceives the snake as an attribute reflecting the problems of the artistic existence and a way to the artistic work, possibly of the artistic work at all. When interpreting the single motives of the snake, three-phase procedure as applied by Erwin Panofsky in description of the motives in the pictures has been chosen by analogy for literary texts. The interpretation is based on the structural position of the motive of the snake in the text and its performance in the text. Subsequently, the principal role is revelation of contexts which updates the given motive of the snake - in particular they are biblical snakes, mythical snakes and a serpentine line as a line of beauty which was the subject of the period aesthetic discourse. The meaning of the motive of the snake in the texts is given primarily by the mutual interaction of theme contexts which is in the single texts realized by various ways. The motive of the snake as formed in the single interpreted texts is a highly complex motive in all the cases. Předložená disertační práce zkoumá funkci a inscenaci motivu hada ve čtyřech vybraných textech o umělcích německého romantismu, přičemž chápe hada jako znak reflektující o problematice umělecké existence a cestě k umělecké tvorbě popř. o umělecké tvorbě vůbec. Při interpretaci jednotlivých motivů hada je zvolen pro literární texty třífázový postup, podobně jak jej aplikuje Erwin Panofsky při popisu motivů na obrazech. Interpretace vychází ze strukturálního postavení motivu hada v textu a jeho inscenace v textu. Stěžejní roli hraje následně odhalení kontextů, které daný motiv hada aktualizuje - jedná se především o biblické hady, mytické hady a hadí linii jakožto linii krásy, která byla předmětem dobového estetického diskursu. Význam motivu hada v textech je dán především vzájemnou interakcí tematizovaných kontextů, která je v jednotlivých textech realizována odlišnými způsoby. Motiv hada, jak je utvářen v jednotlivých interpretovaných textech, je ve všech případech vysoce komplexním motivem. Díky možnosti konotace s hady z oblasti Bible a mytologie se stává literární motiv hada polyvalentním znakem, který charakterizuje i uměleckou existenci jako polyvalentní popř. ambivalentní. To znamená, že je umělecká existence na jedné straně upřednostňována, popř. že je prezentována jako fascinující. Na druhé straně...
