Tests of Silicon detectors for the ATLAS detector upgrade

The main goal of this bachelor thesis is to describe upcoming experiment ATLAS Upgrade and to compare it with present ATLAS, to describe upcoming tests of detectors and our own tests of prototypes of strip silicon detectors for the ATLAS Upgrade. Thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the research facility CERN, specifically the present detector ATLAS, its inner detector and strip silicon detectors. In the next part there is characterized planned detector ATLAS Upgrade and again its inner detector and strip detectors. In the end of this part there is a tabular comparison of ATLAS and ATLAS Upgrade. The last chapter deals with the testing of detectors, at first routine testing of detectors in the past for ATLAS and planned routine tests for ATLAS Upgrade, and finally there are described our own tests of prototype the strip silicon detectors in FZÚ AV ČR supervised by Ing. Marcela Mikeštíková, Ph.D.
Testování ozářených křemíkových detektorů pro experiment ATLAS Upgrade

Participation on development of radiation hard particle detectors for the ATLAS experiment was main goal of this bachelor thesis. Collaboration on the detector development requires understanding of principles of particle detection in HEP experiments. It contains topics of radiation interaction with matter, operation and construction of semiconductor detectors and signal processing. Special attention was paid to radiation damage of silicon detectors. Laser test of irradiated detectors, where operation at low temperature was necessary, were performed. Finally, basic electric characteristics of the detectors were obtained. I participated in preparation and realization of measurement and analysis of the results. Further, the new readout system HSIO was installed with my assistance at the detector laboratory of Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics in Prague. Tests of Semiconductor Detectors in Prague Laboratory

This thesis is focused on automatisation and synchronisation of newly installed devices in Prague laboratory. The devices will form an experimental arran- gement not only for laser tests of ITK modules for the ATLAS detector, but also for tests of other types of semiconductor detectors. In addition to ensuring of a central control of the devices the goal of the thesis was to understand the principle of particle detection in high energy physics as well as to get acquainted with the construction of pixel and microstrip detectors. I participated in the development of a script for cont- rolling a laser, 3-axis motorised translation stages, an optical attenuator and a pulse generator via RS-232 and GPIB communication interfaces from an object-oriented program ROOT. Finally, all installed devices were put into operation and a detailed description of their bundled software and internal control commands was included. The apparatus will participate during upcoming years in the research of the new generation of ITK modules for ATLAS upgrade.
DEPFET - Semiconductor Detectors on Japan Project Belle II

This work deals with accuracy of silicon detectors, especially pixel detector DEPFET. Prediction of particle's in-detector position measurement errors was determined from simulated data and dependence of these errors on several parameters was analysed-some of the parameters relating to the detector (e.g. pixel size) and another relating to the particle (e.g. its energy). Basics about principle of silicon detectors, their applications and accuracy, experiment Belle and Belle II in KEK (The High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) and also statistic method as ANOVA, regression trees, division by probability (using entropy) are summarized here. Finally, original processing of simulated data (using regression trees) and resulting error predictions are presented.
Návrh křemíkového detektoru pro experiment Belle II

This bachelor thesis deals with the verifying of energy losses and checking the implementation of material into software on the inner tracking detector in the Belle II experiment in Japan. The Basf2 framework, which is developed especially for this experiment, was used for this confirmation. First part of the thesis theoretically describes the Belle II experiment, it's inner pixel silicon detector DEPFET and also describes software and analytics framework - Basf2, which is developed for Belle II. Second part presents the knowledge about the energy losses of the particle passing through matter. The last part compares theoretical values with the values acquired from the basf2 simulation.
Testování polovodičových detektorů typu DEPFET

DEPFET pixel detectors were developed more than 20 years ago and they are still being improved, for example on Belle II experiment in Japan. In this thesis we studied the properties of readout cycle of detector matrix and the movement of counted hit positions close to the edges of DEPFET matrix, the which is reffered to as edge effect. The main goal of this work was to familiarize with particle detectors and their principles, especially with DEPFET matrices, to set up laser test system and to write ROOT macro for measurement automatization, run the measurement and analyze obtained data. For this purpose we used red 3 nanosecond long laser pulses, moving stages with very fine step and two connected pulse generators. As a result, the voltage between the outer ring and the inner part of the detector active area was optimalised, the edge effect was reduced by a factor of 2. The time properties of readout cycle, the time period of charge clearing and the time in which is the matrix read out, have been found.
Vývoj křemíkového detektoru pro experiment Belle II

This bachelor thesis describes a simulation of the DEPFET pixel semiconductor detector. The DEPFET detector is a key part of a newly constructed Belle II particle detector being built in KEK, Japan. The simulation is made as a package for the basf2 framework, developed for the Belle II experiment. The goal of this thesis was to learn about the Belle II experiment, DEPFET pixel detector and the basf2 framework and to develop a simulation environment, depicting experimental setup at CERN's SPS accelerator in 2009. First part of this thesis describes the Belle II detector, the basf2 framework and summarizes basic information about silicon particle detectors, especially about the DEPFET technology. A task for the analysis of the data is to evaluate residuals after particle track fitting and cluster information in the pixel detector. Finally the simulation with thinned DEPFET sensor being developed for the Belle II is done.
Programming of drivers of external devices and data evaluation in C++

In the present work we study current status of drivers for external devices in clean room in Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics. In this work we analyse existing software and create a new driver for communication through RS232 port. Work studies various possibilities of serial communication in Windows and Linux and creates possible design for driver, which is based on creating universal layer for supplying communication between user programs and external devices. Work describes important steps of implementation in both operating systems. Next part consists of user documentation for created software. This documentation focuses on di erences of usage in Windows and Linux. At the end work shows report from testing software with real devices and gives advices, which should programmer follows when creating similar software solution.
Communication with external devices in laboratory

In the present work the goal is to map present circumstances of computer infrastructure in the physical laboratory, examine the demands and problems at work in the laboratory such as data backup, remote control, disk space sharing, access organization of processes to external devices, version control of measuring application development, running processes on remote hosts. Assess existing solutions, consider the possibility of improvements and propose new solutions appropriate to the needs of the laboratory. As far as possible, in regard to the current operations of the laboratory, implement solutions to selected problems and requirements. The work has to be methodical material and guide for further development of the laboratory in the coming years.
