Sylviane Dupuis: La Seconde Chute. Commented translation completed with a study of francophone Swiss drama production
Kortusová, Tereza ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
The presented diploma thesis is divided into two parts. The crucial part consists of a translation of a theatre play La Seconde Chute au Godot, Acte III (1993) written by Swiss French-writing author Sylviane Dupuis. This play continues one of the most important plays of 20th century - Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett - and it wants to provide a new outlook on its topics. The translation is completed by a study about Swiss francophone theatre focused mainly on Sylviane Dupuis and a thorough analysis of the play. The center of interest of the second part of the thesis is La Seconde Chute's strong intertextuality and the problems it brings to the phase of understanding and interpretation, as well as in the translation itself. Key words: interpretation, analysis, theatre, Swiss theatre, Sylviane Dupuis, translation of dramatic texts
Feminine Theme in Contemporary Czech Theatre
Metge, Klára ; Sarkissian, Alena (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
The thesis focuses on the depiction of the feminine and stereotypes associated with it in plays that could be qualified as midcult. For the purpose of this analysis, only comedies will be examined as both simplification and schematic characters are one of the key tools of this genre. Midcult in itself enhances this simplification, however with the difference that this simplification is in its case lacking justification. In contemporary Czech mainstream theatre, which inclines towards midcult in the long term, a tradition of staging comedies where the interpretation of female characters is not only based on stereotypes but is reinforcing them is clearly visible. The thesis will analyse two plot schemes which occur frequently in this type of productions: 1. plays in which two seemingly different ageing women befriend each other and decide to go on adventures and 2. plays in which women are perceived as objects - it is most often the case in plots where a male character has several mistresses. In the analysis of different texts and their interpretations of female characters the emphasis will be put chiefly on the way they reinforce the dominant misogynistic perception of women. I will do so by using genre analysis (to determine whether these plays are indeed comedies) and through the lenses of...
Theatre for children of the 21.st century
Pelková, Eliška ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Sarkissian, Alena (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of theatre for young audiences within the context of the 21st century, specifically with its relationship to the generation of children born after the year 2000. Based on knowledge of the generation in the fields of pedagogy, sociology, and psychology, supplemented by my own experience being close to the members of this generation, I am making an argument as to whether theatre plays a role in their lives and in which ways is theatre as a medium beneficial to the child. I look for a solution in the stream of the so-called "progressive theatre for children", which I understand as a theatre that treats the children as belonging to a specific generation, social and cultural environment and, in particular, as active spectators, with whom they try to have a dialogue about the world, events, and emotions that surround them. With the help of three publications of specialists from the theatre for children from Anglo-Saxon backgrounds and the local context of Drama in Education, I am building the concept of progressive theatre for children as a space for exploring the world, shaping and consolidating worldview and value systems free from the conservative culture of formative factors and institutions, which I outline in the first part of the work. The last part of...
Xenophobic Motives in the Spanish Late-Renaissance and Baroque Drama
Kučera, Mojmír ; Pšenička, Martin (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
The aim of my work is to explore the motives of racial and national prejudice in the drama of the Spanish Golden age. On selected examples from the late Renaissance and early Baroque plays, I reflect on the frequency and expressiveness of racially defaming allusions and attitudes based on delegitimization and discrimination of ethnic groups in the religiously and nationally consolidating state. I also notice the development of contemporary xenophobic motives, targeted at members of nations professing Islam and Judaism, as well as other "pagan" ethnic groups. Using literature I try to classify these motives, alternatively to set them into a contemporary historical and biographical context.

This methology should be based on the aquired knowledge summarized in the theoretical part of the. Final part of work aims to apply this methology to specific works and evaluate the degree of thematic displacement.

Meluzinová, Zuzana ; Svátek, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
This bachelor's dissertation deals with French theatrical play Le Concil de Basle which was composed in the first half of the 15th century by an anonymous author. More specifically, it analyses the Czech heretical element present in the text of the play. The dissertation includes an explanation of the political and religious situation at the time of the play's composition and the development of theatrical culture in France in the late Middle Ages. The drama itself is also analysed in terms of genre, language, characters, symbolism, plot, and the author's political stance. The presence of the Bohemian element in the play Concil de Basle is examined based on specific references in the text and their significance, while the thesis also seeks to assess how the author's view of Hussites fits into the wider context of the international reaction to the Hussite movement in Bohemia. Key words Middle Ages, heresy, drama, conciliarism, allegory, theatre, France, 15th century
Elisabeth: a comparison of two stagings of one musical
Zamazalová, Kateřina ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Fridrichovský, Patrik (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses primarily on the Viennese musical Elisabeth, which the creative duo Michael Kunze & Sylvester Levay based on the life story of the Austrian Empress Sisi. The text itself deals with the recording of a renewed production from The Theater an der Wien (premiered in October 2003, recording made in October 2005) which is compared to the Czech premiere in The J. K. Tyl Theatre (premiered in November 2019). The Austrian staging, which was directed by Harry Kupfer, is considered a conventional adaptation of the piece and is put in contrast with the Czech production done by Lumir Olšovký which was created under free licence and its creative team chose its own innovative path. The text of the thesis searches for and names fundamental changes which arose between the two productions premiered 16 years apart. The following aspects are elaborated on in detail: the creative teams of the theaters, directing, costumes, scenography, choreography, actors and main characters. These aspects of the Austrian and Czech production are then compared to each other. In the case of the Czech production, the comparison is partly based on the opinions of domestic cultural reviewers. In the following chapter, three specific scenes, which (in the opinion of the author) have undergone the most notable...

Staging Lars Norén's plays in Czech theatres since 2000
Dolinová, Tereza ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Topolová, Barbara (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the staging of Lars Norén's plays in Czech theatres primarily since 2000. The first part of this thesis introduces the author's work, places it in the context of contemporary Scandinavian drama and focuses more closely on eight plays that the Czech audience had the opportunity to see on local stages during the period under review. The second part is dealing with those specific realizations of Lars Norén's dramas and their critical reflection and responses. The thesis offers a deeper insight into the overall reception of this playwright and, at the same time, rises the questions, why Lars Norén, one of the most successful and respected contemporary Swedish playwrights, is still almost unknown to the Czech audience.
