Method of standard candles for determining distances in the Universe
Mádlová, Tereza ; Šolc, Martin (advisor) ; Mészáros, Attila (referee)
The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to enrich the reader's knowledge about methods of determining distances in the universe. This study is particularly focused on the history of the evolution of these methods, a physical descrip- tion of the problem and interim results. Primarily, this thesis deals with the method of standard candles. First, the main information necessary for study- ing the methods of determining distances in the universe is clarified. Then the thesis describes in detail the issue of important historical events and inventions which affected the evolution of these methods. Through these topics we obtain knowledge of this method, and the knowledge of the theory of the expansion of the universe as well. 1
Properties of the Orionid meteors observed in 2006
Vojáček, Vlastimil ; Koten, Pavel (advisor) ; Šolc, Martin (referee)
In the present work we study the Orionid 2006 meteor shower. All results in this work come from double station video observations. We study exceptional activity, caused most probably by particles trapped in resonance motion with Jupiter. We focused on light curves, atmospheric trajectories and orbital elements of meteoroids. We can find here comparison with other years of activity of the Orionid meteor shower and comparison with other annual meteor showers.
Exoplanets
Kliner, Jiří ; Wolf, Marek (advisor) ; Šolc, Martin (referee)
In this diploma thesis is contained an overview of the current knowledge about extrasolar planets and especially the overview of the current techniques of their detection. It was observed one full transit of the star TrES-1 by a exoplanet on the 65cm telescope on Ondoejov. It was only the second observation the transit from the Czech Republic. It was estimated the parameters of the system and compared with as yet publicated values.

Hrůšová, Lucie ; Šolc, Martin (advisor) ; Drozd, Zdeněk (referee)
The main goal of this work is to apprise readers with one part of our national cultural heritage which is exposed at the National Technical Museum in Prague in the astronomy exposition. This heritage is the planetarium from P. Engelbert Seige from 1791. The first chapter endeavours to delineate under what circumstances the planetarium was originated, and it also includes the life of its creator Engelbert Seige and the history of the Ossegg monastery, where Seige lived and worked. The second chapter is devoted to a detailed description of the astronomical functions of the planetarium and a description of its dials and mechanisms, including pictorial documentation. In the third chapter is briefly described the development of time measurement and clock production, as well as contemporary watchmaking and scientific advances and discoveries. It also describes some contemporary clockworks of other watchmaking masters, namely Jan Klein, Eise Eisinga and Philipp Matthäus Hahn, again including their pictorial documentation. The fourth chapter describes other, but unfinished models of Engelbert Seige.
