Beside this, the paper is supported also by archive materials. The text reflects certain specificity of the topic (maritime business running in the inland country, in addition country ruled by non-democratic regime) and it aims to the company's history; but its main part is concentrated on the sailors' living conditions. It processes direct testimonies about sailors' life and work on Czechoslovak ships; there are included topics as travelling, emigration, direct experience with communist regime on ships, private life of sailors, and their father and husband role. The author does not propose definite conclusions; her effort is aimed to see the topic from various points of view. Sailors are not portrayed as exceptional people but as men whose meaning of life was work on the sea. And this fact principally influenced their lives as well as lives of their families.
Changes of Life and the Perception of Political Power between World War II. and the Comeback of Capitalism in the Village of Sudoměřice
Bek, Lukáš ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
Using the example of the inhabitants of Sudoměřice, a predominantly Catholic village in South Moravia, this thesis examines the relationship of the non-privileged strata members to the manifestations of political power in the period from the end of World War II until about 1990. The main sources are oral history interviews with 13 local citizens. The local chronicle is also an important source. It appears that the power (domination, using Weber's term), which is the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPC) for most of the period examined, takes on a number of different forms in memories, not only depending on the period, but also on the bearers of memories and other circumstances. For example, even some people whose families were persecuted during the Stalinist period have quite different recollections of the local CPC officials in the 1950s and their successors in the 1970s or 1980s. The topic is the question of faith, but also the standard of living. Emphasis is placed on the key moments of "great" history, such as 1945, 1948, 1968 and 1989. This thesis also aims to contribute to the discussion of how the communist regime could hold on for so long. Part of the answer is precisely that diverse perception of power, as well as the forces of social coherence at the village level affecting both local...
Miners as a profession in the background of the Ostrava region.
Hybešová, Kateřina ; Mücke, Pavel (advisor) ; Krátká, Lenka (referee)
This thesis deals with the development of mining and mining colonies in the Ostrava region and also deals with the interpretation of interviews with miners performing their profession in the Ostrava-Karviná mining district between years 1950 and 1994. It focuses not only on the development of the environment and mining conditions in the Ostrava region, but also reasons and motivations for choosing a demanding and often life-threatening profession, as mining is. The thesis is produced using inductive method, where the processes at the individual level apply to wider groups. Such processing allows me to process interviews with witnesses alongside traditional written sources. The finding of the thesis is the fact that there are three main motives for the choosing of mining profession, which are family tradition, the possibility of not participating in two-year compulsory military training and last but not least, the above-standard wage. The thesis offers another view on how workers in socialist Czechoslovakia lived.
