Using Virtual Reality as a Therapeutic Modality for Children with Cerebral Palsy: a Review and Synthesis
Smolová, Petra ; Bartůňková, Staša (advisor) ; Véle, František (referee)
Title: Using Virtual Reality as a Therapeutic Modality for Children with Cerebral Palsy: a Review and Synthesis Author: Bc. Petra Smolová Grammar correction: Jan Valeška Background: Cerebral palsy is often referred to as an" umbrella term" denoting a group of non-progressive conditions involving primarily a disorder of voluntary movement and/or co-ordination. A functional impairment is more important than diagnosis itself, due to the lifelong type of the disease. Therapy in children suffering from CP is nowadays based on individual movement therapy within a whole complex of rehabilitation programmes. The first line of treatment is building up an interdisciplinary team of professionals, led by paediatrics neurologist or neurologist who is pursuing rehabilitation. Physical therapist should always choose an eclectic approach, knowing only too well the reasons why. Virtual reality as a therapeutic modality is standing besides classic methods according to various authors, as we know from schools and different courses. However, this kind of treatment is novel, its results are greatly promising based on current research. Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to outline the use of virtual reality as a method of therapy in children with cerebral palsy in the main functional conditions - motor control, upper...
Ventilation-respiratory changes and diffusion of gases in the simulated snow avalanche
Sýkora, Karel ; Bartůňková, Staša (advisor) ; Hampl, Václav (referee)
Title: Ventilation - respiratory changes and diffusion of gases in the simulated snow avalanche. Goals: The aim of this study was to investigate different ventilation-respiratory parameters with breathing into the simulated snow avalanche with and without any air pockets. Method: An intervention randomized double blind crossover study was conducted on 12 male students of Military Department at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports of Charles University. The study was realized in the Krkonoše Mountains in the period January 14 - 18th, 2013 at an altitude of 762 m above sea level. Each volunteer underwent two phases of the experiment in a random order: 1st phase "AP"- breathing into the snow with a 1 L air pocket, and 2nd phase "NP"- breathing into the snow with no air pocket. Physiological parameters, especially fractions of O2 and CO2 in the airways and work of breathing (WoB) expressed as Pressure- Time Product (PTP) were recorded continuously. Results: The presence of the air pockets and size has an important role in the survival of buried avalanche victims. The finding of this study is that it is possible to breath in the avalanche snow even with no air pocket (0 L), but breathing under this condition is associated with significantly increased work of breathing. The limiting factor in no...

Thesis title: The Effect of Taping Applied to the Skin with the Orientation along the Muscle Fibres of Underlying Muscle on the Activity of this Muscle Problem definition: Taping (the application of an adhesive elastic tape on the body surface) is a widely used therapeutic and preventive method in current sport, clinical and ADL practice. Previous research indicate that taping has effect on pain, proprioception, muscle activity and lymphatic or peripheral vascular circulation. One of the least objectively evaluated effect of taping is the effect on muscle activity. Although the facilitating or inhibiting effect of the tape achieved by the direction of its tension made by the application (from the muscle origin to the insertion or conversely) is commonly referred in available literature, it has not been investigated objectively enough. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate the current findings of the taping method on the base of literature research, formulate hypotheses, work out a quality methodology for the clinical study and through it to evaluate the effect of taping applied to the skin with the orientation along the muscle fibres of underlying muscle on the activity of this muscle. Methods: The evaluation of the findings of the taping method with emphasis on the quality of provided...
Hypercapnia and diffusion of gases in avalanche (Changes in functional parameters of individuals in a crisis situation)

Title: Comparison of educational and compensation exercise programmes for ankylosing spondylitis patients Objective: The objective of the research was to determine the effect of two educational and compensation exercise programmes on the mobility of the axial system, the functional status and disease activity (including inflammatory process activity) in individuals with ankylosing spondylitis. Methods: The research group included men and women (average age of 35.42 ± 7.15 years), all out-patients of the Institute of Rheumatology in Prague. This characteristic sample (n ═ 38) consisted of respondents who were randomised into three groups: The first experimental group (n ═ 13) attended an educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week) and an educational and compensation exercise programme in the form of a group exercise in a pool - hydrokinesiotherapy (once a week); the second experimental group (n ═ 13) attended the same educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week); the control group educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week) received no exercise intervention but its members were allowed to use "passive" physiotherapeutic procedures (e.g. hydrotherapy or...
Influence of the breast operation on the musculoskeletal system

Title: Influence of a breast operation on the musculoskeletal system The aim: The aim of this work is to describe and analyse changes of an extent of movement of the shoulder joint in a direction of an abduction, outer rotation and movement stereotype of the abduction. The target group are women who underwent a partial intervention. The method: For the research we have chosen an examination through the planimetric method with the use of a mechanical goniometer which provides a quantitative output, because this method offers a gentle way of an evaluation of the shoulder's movment extent (regarding to the oncological diagnosis and the type of the operation). To evaluate the quality of the shoulder's movement we used an examination of the movement stereotype of the abduction of thee shoulder by Janda (1993). The results: The results show, that the limitation of the shoulder movement extent and the outer rotation that the operation caused, is, more considerable by the group of women who underwent the mastectomy, then by the group of women who underwent the partial intervention. There were 30% of patients (6 women from 20) who underwent a mastectomy and who suffered from the negative change of the movement stereotype. There were only 5% (1women from 20) of women who suffered from this change in the group...
