The aim of this bachelor thesis is to provide a Czech translation of selected excerpts from the scientific book Animals in Our Midst: The Challenges of Co-existing with Animals in the Anthropocene, which was written by Bernice Bovenkerk and Jozef Keulartz in cooperation with several other scholars from the Wageningen University, Radboud University Nijmegen, Michigan State University, and others. This thesis consists of two parts. The first part contains a Czech translation of an extract from Chapter 14: The Decisions of Wannabe Dog Keepers in The Netherlands written by Susan Ophorst and Bernice Bovenkerk. The second part presents a commentary on the translation, which focuses on analysing the source text and addresses problematic parts and translation shifts that arose as a result of the translation process.

This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is the introductory study. It sums up available information about the life of C. S. Forester, briefly introduces his works and their Czech translations and finally it brings a detailed look on his novel The Good Shepherd, focusing on its plot, its historical context and its in-depth stylistic analysis, which focuses on the novel's typical stylistic features, its composition and used lexis. Second part of this thesis is a translation of a select part of said novel. The third part contains an analysis of translation problems and their solutions. These include the topic of biblical verses and allusions contained within the text, as well as the questions of terminology, facts or orders and set expressions in direct speech.

An annoted translation of selected chapters of Barry Hughart's novel Bridge of Birds with an introduction to the novel's author, style, and complexities of its translation

The thesis is divided into two parts. The practical part contains the translation of the selected chapters of a fantasy novel Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was (1984) by an american author Barry Hughart. The introductory theoretical part contextualises Hughart's novel in the fantasy literature and specifically introduces the chinoiserie genre. Furthermore, the study will focus on the translatological analysis of chosen complexities which are mainly connected to the use of Chinese mythology as well as cultural and historical allusions which are reflected mainly in creating names and titles. The complexities of translating poems and humour are also included in the thesis. An annotated translation of Muriel Spark's selected short stories with an introduction to the author, the style of the short stories and their translation complexities

The thesis consists of two parts. The first, practical part presents a translation of short stories The Portobello Road (1956), The Curtain Blown by the Breeze (1961) and The Young Man Who Discovered the Secret of Life (2000) by the Scottish writer Muriel Spark. The texts represent various periods of Spark's writing career and offer a complex insight into her style and its various shades. The translation is succeeded by a study focusing on the life and work of Muriel Spark and mainly on an analysis of the key translation issues encountered in the process of translation. The key problems include the translation of Spark's specific literary language, the rendering of natural speech and the idiolects of the characters, the translation of names and other culture-specific facts. The theoretical part devoted to the translation analysis stresses the link between various translation theories and the work of a translator.

The subject of the thesis is the Czech reception of works by French author François Mauriac. Providing a complete overview of prose translations, the thesis analyses the development of Czech critical reflection over the course of a century, focusing on both the epitext and peritext (Genette, 1987) of the editions. The second part of the thesis consists of a translatological analysis of the 1927 novel Thérèse Desqueyroux and two Czech translations, resulting in a verdict regarding the possible publication of a new edition of the translation analysed, i.e. re-edition recommendations, the description of necessary editorial changes, or a proposal for a new "generational" translation.
