Pražská Dělnická akademie, založená v roce 1896, se již koncem 19. století stala ústřední sociálně demokratickou vzdělávací institucí. Počet čtenářů, kteří navštěvovali její pražskou knihovnu nebo četli knihy z jejích putovních knihovniček, rychle rostl. Dělnická akademie se také snažila regulovat provoz a především fond dalších dělnických knihoven, a to i prostřednictvím postupně rozšiřované příručky Vzorná spolková knihovna dělnická (1902, 1909, 1920). Článek komentuje (kusé) statistické údaje o čtenářských preferencích návštěvníků knihovny Dělnické akademie a konfrontuje je s představami soudobých sociálnědemokratických pedagogů o dělníkovi jako čtenáři. Ukazuje se, že soulad mezi dělnickými čtenáři a socialistickými knihovníky, který by na první pohled vyplýval například z článků v časopisu Dělnická osvěta, byl do značné míry způsoben regulací fondu dělnických knihoven. The Prague Workers’ Academy (Dělnická akademie), founded in 1896, became a central social-democratic educational institution at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The number of readers who visited this library in Prague or read books offered by travelling workers’ libraries also increased dramatically. The Workers’ Academy also aimed to regulate operations, and above all to fund other workers’ libraries, in part with the help of the handbook Vzorná spolková knihovna dělnická (‘Exemplary Library of Workers' Associations’), which was gradually expanded over successive editions (1902, 1909, 1920). The article provides partial statistical information about the reading preferences of the attendees of the Workers’ Academy library, comparing them to early 20th century representations of working-class readers by social-democratic education workers. The apparent harmony between working-class readers and socialist librarians, which can be seen, for example, in the periodical Dělnická osvěta, turns out to be conditioned by the librarians’ distinctive selection of books they included in their collections available to the working-class reading public.
