Kapitola se zabývá původní definicí a významem pojmu\nnaturalismu ve výtvarném umění ve třetí čtvrtině 19. století. Kontakty, které v tomto smyslu zprostředkoval především Karel Purkyně svou vlastní výtvarně-kritickou\ni malířskou tvorbou, totiž úzce navazují na francouzskou diskusi o naturalismu ve výtvarném umění. Tu zahájil na konci padesátých let kritik Jules-Antoine Castagnary a na její hlavní body navázal ve svých textech věnovaných výtvarnému umění Émile Zola. Skrze Zolovy názory tak lze do jisté míry sledovat rozporuplné dobové pojetí výtvarného naturalismu s jeho\nmnohem více diskutovanou a vyhrocenou literární podobou. The article analysis the original definition of naturalism in the texts of Jules-Antoine Castagnary and the relation of the Czech painter Karel Purkyně to Castagnary´s work. Castagnary´s definition takes a different approach to naturalism than its literary defining by Emile Zola and the article follows these discrepancies between the artistic and literary forms of naturalism in the second third of the 19th century.
