V letech 1848 až 1918 odešlo do USA asi 350-400 tisíc obyvatel českých zemí. Tato masivní emigrace se v posledních letech promítla do české historiografie poměrně výrazně, motivace emigrantů k odchodu do Spojených států však dosud nebyla hlouběji prozkoumána. Práce se proto zabývá touto problematikou. Nahlíží na jednotlivé druhy motivace, motivaci jednotlivců a zejména jednotlivých socio-profesních skupin a zohledňuje i geografické otázky (jak s ohledem na místo původního bydliště, tak i s ohledem na místo, kam obyvatelé českých zemí odešli v rámci USA). Autorka vychází především z dochovaných osobních dokumentů (korespondence, zápisky, deníky, paměti, vzpomínky), krajanských periodik, ale i dalších zdrojů, např. některých úředních dokumentů. Between 1848 and 1918 about 350-400 thousand inhabitants of the Czech lands left for the USA. This massive emigration has been reflected in Czech historiography quite significantly in recent years, but the motivation of the emigrants to leave for the United States has not yet been studied in depth. The paper therefore deals with this issue. It looks more deeply at individual types of motivation, the motivation of individuals and especially individual socio-professional groups, and also takes into account geographical issues (both with regard to the place of original residence and the place where the inhabitants of Czech lands left for within the USA). The author draws mainly on surviving personal documents (correspondence, notes, diaries, memoirs, memories), compatriot periodicals, as well as other sources, such as some official documents.
