Tato bakalářská práce se bude zabývat zastoupením výtvarného umění na festivalu nazývaném Festival of Britain v roce 1951, který se konal v různých městech po celém Spojeném království. Po 2. světové válce utrpělo Spojené království Velké Británie a Severního Irska značné ztráty. Teror a devastace války se promítly i do každodenního života britské společnosti v 2. polovině 40. let, jež se domnívala, že se z této traumatizující skutečnosti již nikdy nezotaví. Právě z toho důvodu byla uspořádána událost, která by občanům Spojeného království vrátila sebevědomí a podpořila by britského ducha společně s myšlenkou, že se britská společnost dokáže vzpamatovat z poválečného období úpadku a nejistoty. Proto měl Festival of Britain prezentovat vše, čeho je britský lid i po takové kruté ráně schopen - od vědeckých objevů, přes nové technologické vymoženosti, koncerty orchestrální hudby, až po současnou malbu, sochařství, architekturu i užité umění. Festival of Britain se stal tzv. Beacon for Change - Majákem pro změnu neboli symbolem značící počátek nové éry. Tento festival tak patří mezi klíčové události poválečné britské historie a je zároveň jedním z faktorů, které přispěly k obnově víry v lepší budoucnost po celém Spojeném království. This Bachelor Thesis is going to analyze the represantation of fine arts at a festival called Festival of Britain in 1951, which took place in different cities and towns all over The United Kingdom. After World War II The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland suffered extensive damages. Terror and devastation of war have projected themselves in the second half of the 40s into everyday life of British society, which thought it is never going to recover from this traumatic reality. Exactly for that reason an event was to be organized, which would have given the citizens of The United Kingdom back their confidence and which would boost the British spirit together with the idea, that the British society can get over the postwar era of decline and insecurity. Therefore the Festival of Britain should have represented everything, that the British people were able to do even after such a deep wound - from science inventions, new technological achievements, orchestral concerts, to contemporary painting, sculpture, architecture and applied arts. Festival of Britain became the so called Beacon for Change - a symbol signaling the beginning of a new era.
