Oxidační stres je způsoben přebytkem reaktivních forem kyslíku (ROS) nebo nedostatečnou aktivitou antioxidantů, které za normálních okolností snižují hladiny ROS a tím chrání organismus před oxidativním poškozením. Zdroje ROS lze dělit na dva typy, endogenní, mezi které patří např. leukocyty a nezralé spermie a exogenní, kam jsou řazeny faktory jako je znečištění ovzduší těžkými kovy, kouření tabákových výrobků, obezita a další. Nízké hladiny ROS mají pozitivní vliv na fyziologické funkce organismu včetně procesu spermatogeneze, kde se podílí např. na hladkém průběhu hyperaktivace a kapacitace spermií. Nicméně zvýšené hladiny ROS spouští řadu buněčných patologií, ať už jde o ztrátu fluidity biologických membrán v důsledku peroxidace lipidů, deformaci enzymatických proteinů nebo fragmentaci DNA, což se negativně odráží na fertilitě jedince. Vzhledem k významné pozitivní korelaci odbourávání ROS antioxidanty se zlepšujícími se parametry spermií infertilního jedince, se v poslední době začíná antioxidační terapie využívat jako možná úspěšná součást léčby mužské idiopatické neplodnosti. Oxidative stress is a phenomenon caused by an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS), or by insufficient activity of antioxidants, that reduces these ROS levels and thereby protect the organism from oxidative damage. ROS have two types of origin: endogenous, which includes leukocytes and immature sperm, and exogenous, which includes factors such as air pollution caused by heavy metals, smoking tobacco products, obesity and others. Low levels of ROS have a positive effect on the physiological functions of the organism, including the process of spermatogenesis, where ROS participates in the course of hyperactivation and capacitation. However, increased levels of ROS trigger a number of cellular pathologies, whether the loss of fluidity of biological membranes due to lipid peroxidation, deformation of enzymatic proteins or DNA fragmentation, which negatively affects individuals' infertility. Due to the significant positive correlation of ROS scavenging by antioxidants with improving sperm parameters of an infertile individual, antioxidant therapy has recently begun to be used as a possible successful component of male idiopathic infertility treatment.
